En 2020 sortait The Ropes, album qui nous avait fait découvrir le travail de Trank en nous enchantant avec un rock taillé pour les plus grandes scènes. D’ailleurs le groupe a pu partager sa musique devant des salles bondées en compagnie de Deep Purple par exemple! C’est avec The Maze, leur deuxième album disponible depuis le 29 novembre via M&O Music, qu’on les retrouve pour onze nouveaux titres qu’on a très très hâte de découvrir!

Dès le début du premier titre le groupe nous livre un « Adrenalin » qui montre qu’ils n’ont rien perdu de leur envie de proposer une musique des plus fédératrices. La voix de Michel André Jouveaux frappe par sa clarté et sa puissance tout en ayant un timbre bien à elle qui reste la marque de fabrique du groupe. Les deux titres suivants, singles choisis par le groupe pour promouvoir l’album, donnent à Nicolas Raymond et David Spatola l’occasion de nous proposer des riffs restants en tête dès la première écoute. Côté influences musicales on reste dans le rock avec des notes de stoner ou de métal parsemées ça et là pour un ensemble des plus réussis. On vous a d’ailleurs laissé « Twenty First Century Slave » en fin d’article pour vous faire une idée de ce qui vous attend. Michel André et David se partagent également tout du long les parties de claviers qu’on a grand plaisir à retrouver dans ce disque, qui pour le moment est totalement fidèle au grand talent de composition du groupe franco-suisse. A la batterie on retrouve Johann Evanno, qui sur un titre comme « Chameleon » nous montre clairement toute sa versatilité. Le section rythmique de cet album est complétée par Arnaud Bled à la basse qui nous offre des lignes bien puissantes quand il le faut, de quoi faire remuer même les plus récalcitrants dans la fosse. Le groupe fait évoluer son style tout au long du disque mais on s’y retrouve toujours en retrouvant ce qui fait le son de Trank! Désireux de s’offrir un son des plus massifs, le groupe s’est entouré de pointures: Brian Robbins (Bring Me The Horizon, Asking Alexandria) au mix et Andy Van Dette (Porcupine Tree, David Bowie) au mastering. Autant vous dire qu’on a là un disque qui sonne fort et prêt à retourner les salles de concert et vos salons. Sur « Pray For Rain », on a le droit à un solo de claviers des plus réussis qui vient ajouter encore une couche à morceau des plus énergiques. Le groupe nous offre ensuite une très belle reprise de Pink Floyd avec l’excellent « Hey You ». Les musiciens y mettent tout leur amour de la formation britannique tout en laissant leur patte à eux transparaitre dans chaque note. Après un titre encore bien bien rock, c’est un morceau avec une intro acoustique que le groupe nous propose avec « Boys (Eyes On The Road) ». Mais le rock reprend vite ses droits avec des influences blues et southern rock très présentes pour notre plus grand plaisir. L’album se clôt sur » The Morning After » qui laisse aux musiciens une dernière occasion de nous proposer ce qu’ils font de mieux avec toujours cette belle envie de mélanger les influences pour un plaisir auditif total.
Trank confirment avec The Maze qu’ils sont un des grands groupe de rock que compte la scène française (et Suisse!). Les onze morceaux s’écoutent à l’envie et on a clairement envie de se repasser l’album pour en découvrir toutes les petites subtilités. On est, contrairement à ce que le titre indique, jamais perdu et on reste sur une identité rock comme on les adore. On ne peut que vivement vous encourager à plonger dans cet album et à aller soutenir le groupe dès que possible près de chez vous.

In 2020, The Ropes was released, an album that introduced us to Trank’s work, enchanting us with rock that was made for the biggest stages. In fact, the band have played to packed houses with the likes of Deep Purple! Their second album, The Maze, released on November 29th via M&O Music, features eleven new tracks that we can’t wait to discover!
Right from the start of the first track, the band deliver an ‘Adrenalin’ which shows that they have lost none of their desire to offer some of the most unifying music on the planet. Michel André Jouveaux‘s voice is striking in its clarity and power, yet it has its own distinctive timbre that remains the band’s trademark. The next two tracks, singles chosen by the band to promote the album, give Nicolas Raymond and David Spatola the opportunity to deliver riffs that stay in your head from the very first listen. In terms of musical influences, the album remains a rock affair, with hints of stoner and metal sprinkled in here and there to create a highly successful whole. In fact, we’ve left ‘Twenty First Century Slave’ at the end of this article to give you an idea of what’s in store. Michel André and David also share the keyboard parts throughout, which we’re delighted to find on this album, which for the moment is totally faithful to the Franco-Swiss band’s great songwriting talent. On drums we find Johann Evanno, who clearly shows his versatility on a track like ‘Chameleon’. The rhythm section on this album is completed by Arnaud Bled on bass, who delivers some powerful lines when needed, enough to get even the most recalcitrant in the pit moving. The band’s style evolves throughout the album, but you’ll always find the same Trank sound! Keen to achieve the most massive sound possible, the band have surrounded themselves with some big names: Brian Robbins (Bring Me The Horizon, Asking Alexandria) on mixing and Andy Van Dette (Porcupine Tree, David Bowie) on mastering. Suffice it to say, this is one big-sounding record, ready to turn concert halls and living rooms upside down. On ‘Pray For Rain’, we’re treated to a brilliant keyboard solo that adds yet another layer to this energetic track. The band then offer us a very fine Pink Floyd cover with the excellent ‘Hey You’. The musicians put all their love of the British band into this, while letting their own personal touch shine through in every note. After another rocking title track, the band offer us an acoustic intro with ‘Boys (Eyes On The Road)’. But the rock sound soon returns with blues and southern rock influences, much to our delight. The album closes with ‘The Morning After’, which gives the musicians one last chance to show us what they do best, always with this desire to mix influences for total listening pleasure.
With The Maze, Trank confirm that they are one of the great rock bands on the French (and Swiss!) scene. You can listen to the eleven tracks over and over again, and you’ll want to play the album again and again to discover all the subtleties. Contrary to what the title suggests, you’re never lost and you’re left with a rock identity that we love. We urge you to dive into this album and support the band as soon as possible in your area.
