Après un album enregistré en France l’an dernier avec Love, Death And In Between, les néerlandais de Dewolff partent à l’assaut de deux des studios les plus mythiques des Etats Unis : le Muscle Shoals Sound Studio et FAME Studios. Des lieux mythiques de la soul musique et de la musique en général. De quoi réaliser les rêves de nous néerlandais favoris. Leur dixième album; le bien nommé Muscle Shoals, est donc disponible dès le 6 décembre via Mascot Label Group.

Dès l’intro de « In Love » on retrouve le son qu’on adore chez le trio néerlandais, un classic rock tinté de multiples influences qui prend aux tripes dès les premières notes. Les frère van de Poel et Robin Piso nous livrent là encore la musique dont ils ont le secret, un son qui vient du cœur et qui respire l’authenticité. Accompagnés de leurs choristes et d’amis musiciens pour ajouter d’autres instruments les voilà prêts pour nous faire voyager en musique. « Natural Woman » est un tube en puissance qui laisse à Pablo van de Poel l’occasion de nous montrer ses talents de guitariste et de chanteur. La soul, le blues, le rock tout est présent dans ce nouveau disque où les instruments de légende des studios ont été utilisés au plus grand bonheur des trois musiciens. Robin Piso excelle toujours derrière son orgue Hammond et autres pianos et claviers et forme un duo de choix avec Luka van de Poel versatile à souhait derrière ses fûts. Le très soul « Let’s Stay Together » montre l’influence du lieu sur le son du groupe et nous dévoile une nouvelle facette de composition qu’on adore! « Ophelia prend la suite et nous relance sur la piste de dance avec son rythme endiablé. Partons du côté du southern rock avec « Truce » qui avec sa guitare et le chant de Pablo colle parfaitement avec leur présence aux studios situés en Alabama. Et que dire de ce petit solo de saxophone qu’on ne se lasse pas d’entendre. On sent la présence de Aretha Franklin, qui a enregistré au FAME Studios, dans l’excellent et très rythmé « Book Of Life ». La suite de l’album n’est qu’une usine à morceaux indémodables, mais on s’arrêtera plus en longueur sur « Snowbird » qui du haut de ses huits minutes laisse aux musiciens l’occasion de nous livrer leur tout meilleur, même si c’était déjà le cas depuis le début de l’album. Son son très soul vient nous rappeler qu’on devrait se replonger au plus vite dans les albums mythiques du genre. Le groupe excelle une fois de plus et montre qu’ils se sont sentis habités une fois de plus par les lieux où ils enregistrent. L’album se clôt sur « Cicada Seranade » petite outro qui nous laisse sur une superbe note de bruits de cigales, et avec ces mélodies qui nous resterons en tête longtemps.
Avec Muscle Shoals, Dewolff restent au sommet tout en faisant continuellement évoluer leurs sons avec de nouvelles influences qui se mêlent parfaitement comme dans le meilleur des chaudrons. Un album à réécouter à l’envie pour en déceler toutes les petites subtilités mais qui reste dès la première écoute comme une pure réussite auditive. On ne se lasse pas de découvrir ce que le groupe a à nous proposer et on espère les voir débarquer à Lille au plus vite pour un de leurs live d’anthologie!

After an album recorded in France last year with Love, Death And In Between, Dutch band Dewolff are taking on two of the most legendary studios in the USA: Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and FAME Studios. Two legendary venues for soul music and music in general. Enough to make the dreams of our favourite Dutchmen come true. Their tenth album, the aptly named Muscle Shoals, will be available from December 6th via Mascot Label Group.
Right from the intro to ‘In Love’ we find the sound we love from this Dutch trio, a classic rock tinged with multiple influences that grips us from the very first notes. The van de Poel brothers and Robin Piso once again deliver the music they’re famous for, a sound that comes from the heart and exudes authenticity. Accompanied by their backing singers and musician friends to add other instruments, they are ready to take us on a musical journey. ‘Natural Woman’ is a potential hit that gives Pablo van de Poel the chance to show off his guitar and vocal talents. Soul, blues and rock are all present on this new album, where legendary studio instruments are used to the great delight of the three musicians. Robin Piso still excels behind his Hammond organ and other pianos and keyboards, and forms a choice duo with Luka van de Poel, who is as versatile as ever behind his drums. The very soulful ‘Let’s Stay Together’ shows the influence of the place on the band’s sound and reveals a new facet of composition that we love! Ophelia’ follows and gets us back on the dancefloor with its frenzied rhythm. Truce’, with its guitar and Pablo‘s vocals, is a perfect match for the band’s presence at the Alabama studios. And what can we say about that little saxophone solo we never tire of hearing? You can feel the presence of Aretha Franklin, who recorded at FAME Studios, on the excellent, rhythmic ‘Book Of Life’. The rest of the album is just a factory of timeless tracks, but we’ll dwell a little longer on ‘Snowbird’, which at eight minutes gives the musicians a chance to give us their very best, even if this was already the case from the start of the album. Its very soulful sound reminds us that we should dive back into the mythical albums of the genre as soon as possible. The band excel once again and show that they have once again felt inhabited by the places where they record. The album closes on ‘Cicada Seranade’, a short outro that leaves us on a superb note of animal sounds, and these melodies that will stay with us for a long time.
With Muscle Shoals, Dewolff remain at the top of their game, while continually evolving their sounds with new influences that blend perfectly like the best of cauldrons. It’s an album you’ll have to listen to over and over again to pick out all the subtleties, but it’s a pure aural success from the very first listen. We can’t get enough of what the band have to offer, and we hope to see them in Lille as soon as possible for one of their anthology live shows!
