Cela fait déjà quinze ans que State Champs ont démarré leur carrière et autant vous dire que cela fait une belle dizaine d’années que l’on suit leurs sorties de près. En cette année 2024, le groupe venu tout droit de Albany dans l’Etat de New-York nous propose de découvrir un cinquième album éponyme. 12 nouveaux titres pop-punk à se mettre sous la dent, disponibles depuis le 8 novembre via Pure Noise Records.

Le groupe américain nous montre qu’ils n’ont rien perdu, bien au contraire, de leur énergie dès « The Constant ». On retrouve les refrains qui restent en tête dès la première écoute et qui seront sans aucun doute repris en chœur lors des prochains concerts du groupe! La voix de Derek DiScanio vient nous captiver une fois de plus avec un chant toujours énergique mais qui fait passer les émotions sans effort. Tyler Szalkowski envoie ses meilleurs riffs tout au long du disque, et nous donne envie de remuer avec l’intro diablement énergique de « Clueless ». Le pop-punk des américains représente tout ce qu’on aime du genre et années après années ils prouvent qu’ils sont devenus un véritable immanquable du genre! Ryan Scott à la basse et Evan Ambrosio à la batterie forment un duo rythmique qui nous donne envie de nous lancer dans un pogo à chaque seconde. Au bout des cinq premiers titres on se dit déjà qu’on a un très grand album du groupe dans les oreilles. Les tubes s’enchainent à vitesse folle avec toujours cette capacité des américains à trouver le bon riff, la bonne énergie, la bonne rythmique! « Sobering » vient confirmer une fois de plus l’envie du groupe de nous faire remuer dans notre salon, même si on sent poindre l’émotion à plusieurs instants dans ce titre. La force du groupe a toujours résidé dans sa capacité à composer des titres qui viennent nous toucher tout en étant de véritables petites bombes d’énergie brute. On ne peut qu’apprécier la voix de Derek sur un titre comme « Just A Dream » qui vient toucher notre corde sensible avec toujours ces paroles conçues pour nous rester en tête instantanément. Sur « Save Face Story » le groupe accueille les allemands de Slope pour un mélange habile entre pop-punk et punk hardcore. Les deux univers fonctionnent à merveille ensemble et on tiens là un des titres les plus réussis de cet album! On termine ce disque avec « Golden Years », autre grande réussite des américains avec son texte fort sur le fait d’être adulte et de repenser aux belles années qui semblent disparaître une fois nos vies bien rangées. Une note nostalgique pour finir et nous donner envie de relancer cet album au plus vite!
State Champs arrivent une fois de plus avec ce cinquième album à nous enchanter avec un pop-punk toujours au diapason! Evidemment le genre fait que l’on est pas face à une révolution stylistique mais ça n’est pas forcément ce qu’on recherche ici. Douze titres et douze tubes en puissance c’est ce que les américains nous proposent ici avec brio! Alors autant vous dire qu’on ne manquera leur tournée européenne de début 2025 pour rien au monde!

It’s been fifteen years since State Champs launched their career, and we’ve been following their releases closely for a good ten years now. Now, in 2024, the band from Albany, New York, are back with their fifth self-titled album. 12 new pop-punk tracks to sink your teeth into, available from November 8th via Pure Noise Records.
The American band show us that they have lost none of their energy, quite the contrary, right from ‘The Constant’. The refrains that stick in your head from the first listen will undoubtedly be taken up in chorus at the band’s next concerts! Derek DiScanio‘s voice captivates us once again with its energetic vocals that effortlessly convey the emotions. Tyler Szalkowski delivers some of his best riffs on the whole record, and gets us moving with the devilishly energetic intro to ‘Clueless’. The Americans’ pop-punk represents everything we love about the genre, and year after year they prove that they’ve become one of the genre’s unmissable acts! Ryan Scott on bass and Evan Ambrosio on drums form a rhythmic duo that makes you want to throw yourself into a pogo every second. After the first five tracks, you’re already thinking you’ve got a great album from the band in your ears. The hits follow one another at breakneck speed, with the Americans still able to find the right riff, the right energy and the right rhythm! ‘Sobering’ confirms once again the band’s desire to get us moving in our living rooms, even if you can feel the emotion coming through at several points in this track. The band’s strength has always been their ability to write songs that touch you, while at the same time being little bombs of raw energy. We can’t help but appreciate Derek‘s voice on a track like ‘Just A Dream’, which strikes a chord with us, with lyrics designed to get stuck in our heads instantly. On ‘Save Face Story’ the band welcome in Germany’s Slope for a skilful blend of pop-punk and hardcore punk. The two worlds work wonderfully together and this is one of the most successful tracks on the album! We end the album with ‘Golden Years’, another great success from the Americans, with its powerful lyrics about being an adult and thinking back to the beautiful years that seem to disappear once our lives are tidied up. A nostalgic note to end on, to make us want to re-release this album as soon as possible!
With their fifth album, State Champs have once again managed to enchant us with a pop-punk sound that’s always in tune with the times! Obviously the genre doesn’t mean we’re facing a stylistic revolution, but that’s not necessarily what we’re looking for here. Twelve tracks and twelve potential hits – that’s what the Americans have brilliantly delivered here! And we wouldn’t miss their European tour in early 2025 for the world!
