Les norvégiens de Leprous nous avaient proposé en août dernier l’excellent et étonnant Melodies Of Atonement. Pour célébrer cette sortie le groupe s’est lancé en ce début d’année dans une mini tournée spéciale sous le format « An Evening With ». Direction donc la très belle Salle Pleyel pour une soirée qui s’annonce unique, puisque deux sets seront joués. C’est dans une salle pleine à craquer nous arrivons prêts à nous laisser porter par la musique si puissante du combo de Nottoden.

Les lumières s’éteignent et le public accueille avec ferveur le groupe norvégien sur la scène. D’entrée on attaque fort avec le single du dernier album en date, « Silently Walking Alone » et ses refrains surpuissants. La première chose qui frappe est la qualité du son, c’est simple tous les instruments sont parfaitement audibles et la voix d’Einar Solberg est d’une clarté impressionnante. L’enchainement avec « The Price » est magistral et laisse au public l’occasion de se chauffer la voix avec l’intro bien connue de tous. La prestation est déjà inoubliable, et nous n’en sommes qu’au deuxième titre du premier set. Tor Oddmund Suhrke, Robin Ognedal impériaux derrière leurs guitares n’hésitent pas à rejoindre Harrison White aux claviers pour des titres comme « I Hear The Sirens ». Le morceau « Like A Sunken Ship » accueille la première dose de pyro, une première pour les norvégiens! Là encore Einar nous livre une prestation à coller les frissons à toute l’assistance avec une alternance de notes hautes des plus émouvantes à des screams des plus puissants. « Forced Entry », morceau issu de Bilateral (2012), est un beau cadeaux offert aux fans de la première heure et une belle occasion pour montrer que les anciens morceaux annonçaient déjà une belle carrière à venir pour la formation. Einar blaguera d’ailleurs sur le fait que pour lui ce titre est un mix de sonorités mises ensemble sans vraiment de cohérence, pour nous il n’en est rien et on profite d’entendre ce titre beaucoup trop rare sur les setlists. Retour aux classiques à reprendre en chœur avec « Out Of Here » ou « Allaviate » qui laissent Baard Kolstad exprimer tout son talent à la batterie. C’est simple, même si le reste du groupe est en forme olympique il est toujours très difficile de détourner les yeux de la batterie de Baard tant son jeu est versatile et captivant. Les émotions autant sur scène que dans le public sont bien présentes, mais il est temps de redonner une belle dose de métal prog avec « Foe », morceau que tous les fans présents ce soir accueilleront avec les applaudissements qu’il mérite. Ce morceau sera également l’occasion pour Baard de saluer ses parents venus ce soir et de rappeler qu’à l’époque de ce titre son père était un chauffeur de choix pour aller d’une salle à l’autre. A la basse Simen Børven nous offre lui aussi une prestation impeccable, tout autant que ses chœurs sur de nombreux titres. Pour terminer en beauté ce premier set, qui de mieux que « Nightime Disguise », morceau crée avec des fans pendant le confinement. Là encore des prestations inoubliables qui nous émeuvent au plus haut point avec en apothéose la partie en chant hurlée de fin qui montre une fois de plus que Einar n’a rien perdu de son talent de growler avec les années. Le groupe nous propose de se retrouver dans une vingtaine de minutes pour la suite des aventures.
C’est prêts pour une seconde offrande des norvégiens que nous retournons au plus près de la scène. Le groupe décide de démarrer en trombes avec les envolées vocales de « Unfree My Soul », preuve s’il en est de la qualité du dernier opus de la formation norvégienne. Rapidement le public pourra reprendre en chœur le désormais mythique « Below ». Chaque musicien livre encore là une performance à couper le souffle, et cela sera renforcé par la surprise de la soirée à savoir l’interprétation de « Passing »! Ce morceau issu du premier album du groupe, Tall Poppy Syndrome sorti en 2009″ impressionnera le public, tant on sent les prémices de toute la suite mais avec un côté peu être plus métal qui en ressort. Une vraie madeleine de Proust pour certain, un vrai coup de cœur enflammé pour d’autres. Sur « Faceless », le groupe accueille en fin de titres une chorale de fans choisie spécialement pour l’occasion. Un très beau moment de partage où les sourires sur scène sont légions. On sait que la fin approche mais il reste deux titres et pas des moindres pour s’émouvoir et donner toute l’énergie qu’il nous reste: « Castaway Angels » et le tubesque « From The Flame »! Le public n’hésite pas à tout donner sur cette dernière et applaudit à tout rompre le groupe, visiblement très ému, avant de les voir quitter la scène. Ils reviendront très rapidement à la demande générale pour « Atonement » et ses parties de batterie toujours aussi dantesques avant une fin sur « The Sky Is Red » qui laissera tout le public de Pleyel subjugué une fois de plus! Le groupe quitte cette fois-ci définitivement la scène en profitant de l’ovation diablement méritée qui leur est faite.
Ce soir à la Salle Pleyel, Leprous ont offert une prestation digne des plus grands. C’est simple ce concert respirait l’envie de donner le meilleur aux fans. Du son cristallin aux prestations impressionnantes de chaque musicien ou à la setlist absolument parfaite, on ne pouvait rêver plus belle soirée. La barre est très très haute, et on espère que le groupe aura dans le futur l’occasion de reproposer ce genre de soirée inoubliable! Un grand concert qu’il sera difficile de dépasser tant il nous a bluffé en tout points.

Last August, Norway’s Leprous brought us the excellent and astonishing Melodies Of Atonement. To celebrate this release, the band embarked on a special mini-tour at the start of the year, entitled ‘An Evening With’. So it’s off to the beautiful Salle Pleyel for what promises to be a unique evening, with two sets to be played. We arrived to a packed house, ready to let ourselves be carried away by the powerful music of the Nottoden combo.

The lights go down and the audience greets the Norwegian band on stage. Right from the start, the band hit the ground running with the single from their latest album, ‘Silently Walking Alone’, and its powerful refrains. The first thing that strikes you is the quality of the sound – it’s simple, all the instruments are perfectly audible and Einar Solberg‘s voice is impressively clear. The segue into ‘The Price’ is masterful, giving the audience a chance to warm up their voices with the familiar intro. The performance is already unforgettable, and we’re only on the second track of the first set. Tor Oddmund Suhrke and Robin Ognedal, imperious behind their guitars, don’t hesitate to join Harrison White on keyboards for tracks like ‘I Hear The Sirens’. The track ‘Like A Sunken Ship’ features the first dose of pyro, a first for the Norwegians! Once again, Einar delivers a performance that will send shivers down the spine of the entire audience, alternating between the most moving high notes and the most powerful screams. ‘Forced Entry’, a track from Bilateral (2012), is a fine gift for long-time fans and a great opportunity to show that the band’s old songs already heralded a fine career ahead. Einar joked that for him this track was a mix of sounds put together without any real coherence, but for us it was nothing of the sort and we enjoyed hearing this track, which is all too rare on setlists. Back to the classics to sing along to with ‘Out Of Here’ and ‘Allaviate’, which let Baard Kolstad show off all his talent on the drums. It’s simple: even if the rest of the band are in top form, it’s always hard to take your eyes off Baard‘s drums because his playing is so versatile and captivating. Emotions are running high both on stage and in the audience, but it’s time for another dose of prog metal with ‘Foe’, a track that all the fans here tonight will greet with the applause it deserves. This track also gives Baard the opportunity to salute his parents, who have come here tonight, and to point out that at the time of this song his father was a driver of choice to get from one venue to another. Bassist Simen Børven also gave a flawless performance, as did his backing vocals on many of the tracks. What better way to end this first set than with ‘Nightime Disguise’, a song created with fans during the COVID lock-in. Once again, unforgettable performances that move us to the core, culminating in the screamed vocals at the end, which once again show that Einar has lost none of his growling talent over the years. The band invite us to meet up again in around twenty minutes’ time for the next instalment of their adventures.
Ready for a second offering from the Norwegians, we return to the stage. The band decided to kick things off with a bang with the soaring vocals of ‘Unfree My Soul’, proof if ever there was of the quality of the band’s latest opus. It wasn’t long before the crowd were singing along to the now legendary ‘Below’. Each musician delivered another breathtaking performance, and this was reinforced by the surprise of the evening, the performance of ‘Passing’! This track, taken from the band’s first album, Tall Poppy Syndrome, released in 2009, will impress the audience, as you can feel the beginnings of what’s to come, but with a more metal edge. A real Proust’s madeleine for some, a real heartthrob for others. On ‘Faceless’, the band welcomes a specially selected choir of fans at the end of each track. It was a wonderful moment of sharing, and the smiles on stage were legion. We knew the end was nigh, but there were still two tracks, and not the least of them, to stir us up and give us all the energy we had left: ‘Castaway Angels’ and the hit ‘From The Flame’! The crowd went wild for the latter, applauding wildly for the visibly moved band before they left the stage. They quickly returned by popular demand for ‘Atonement’, with its drumming just as dazzling as ever, before finishing with ‘The Sky Is Red’, which left the entire Pleyel audience spellbound once again! This time the band left the stage for good, to a well-deserved standing ovation.
Tonight at the Salle Pleyel, Leprous put on a performance worthy of the greats. Quite simply, the concert exuded a desire to give their fans the very best. From the crystal-clear sound to the impressive performances of each musician and the absolutely perfect setlist, we couldn’t have asked for a better evening. The bar has been set very, very high, and we hope that the band will have the opportunity to repeat this kind of unforgettable evening in the future! It was a great concert that will be hard to top, because it blew us away in every way.
