Après avoir dévoilé quelques singles extraits de l’album, les belges de Worlds Beyond et leur métal symphonique font leur grand retour avec Rhapsody of Life. Prévu pour le 31 janvier en autoproduction, cet opus se présente comme une célébration de l’existence humaine.

Fondé en 2017 à Gand par Tijmen Matthys, le sextet belge commence réellement son épopée dans le metal symphonique en pleine crise COVID avec un premier album, Symphony of Dawn, publié le 12 décembre 2020. Le groupe enchaîne à présent avec son deuxième projet musical, Rhapsody of Life, alliant de nouveau guitare, violon, orchestre symphonique et voix cristalline. Occupant une place spéciale dans leurs cœurs et souhaitant donner un sens profond à leur nouvelle œuvre, les membres de Worlds Beyond ont décidé que chaque titre puisse mettre en lumière une expérience spécifique de la vie.
Ce deuxième opus débute donc par “Familiar Skies”, une chanson sur le passage du temps et les souvenirs qui peuvent en découler. L’introduction de ce morceau fait la part belle aux cordes de la basse de Ewoud Dekoninck accompagné par l’épique clavier de Robbe Adriaens. On retrouve ici une variété musicale assez prononcée, avec la participation de l’ensemble des membres du groupe, signe d’une certaine richesse instrumentale. C’est Tijmen qui démarre ensuite “Unwind Our Story” avec sa guitare, enchainant par des passages bien plus “metal” qu’à l’accoutumée, entrecoupés par les envolées lyriques de Valerie De Kempe. Ce titre, relatant la perte de sa propre identité dans une relation, se démarque par son aspect plus extrême, ce qui en fait sans aucun doute l’un des plus marquants de l’album !
D’apparence bucolique, la prochaine chanson, “Sleepless Dreams” explore, à l’aide de la mélodie enchanteresse de la vocaliste, la frontière entre la vie et la mort. “Breaking Free” n’est pas en reste puisque, commençant par des sonorités similaires, la musique s’emballe rapidement grâce au violon de Jakob Declercq retranscrivant magnifiquement le thème de l’émancipation et de la libération personnelle. Jakob revient au début de “The Calling” pour entamer le sujet de l’inspiration créative, propos qui reviendra en partie dans “The Spark”, où son instrument continuera de résonner avec harmonie. Loin d’être le seul à se faire plaisir dans cet opus, Tijmen ne démérite pas avec sa guitare et ses nombreux solos, notamment dans “The Calling”, “Beyond Reality” et “One With The Stars”, ces deux derniers évoquant le sens de la vie et l’évolution personnelle.
Renaissance émotionnelle et lien profond entre humains sont au cœur de “Enchantment”, titre particulièrement envoûtant, autant par les chants grandioses de Valerie que par la virtuosité des musiciens. Mention spéciale au trio Wout Debacker (batterie), Tijmen et Jakob, qui nous offrent un véritable moment de complicité et de complexité musicale. De même, “The Moment” met à l’honneur les instrumentistes du groupe avec une composition minimaliste poussant, tel que son nom l’indique, à vivre l’instant présent.
Rhapsody of Life se termine en apothéose avec son morceau éponyme d’une dizaine de minutes, qui débute par la lecture de ‘All the world’s a stage’, un extrait du monologue de la pièce ‘Comme il vous plaira’ de William Shakespeare. Les notes de piano qui suivent font d’ailleurs étonnamment penser au thème principal du film… Halloween ! Titre phare de l’album, cette chanson est la quintessence du projet, regroupant l’ensemble des propos abordés dans cette nouvelle production musicale.
Évoquant des problématiques profondes tout au long de cet album, Worlds Beyond démontre, avec Rhapsody of Life, son talent dans le milieu du metal symphonique, signant un album plus abouti que le précédent. Les fans de Nightwish ou encore Within Temptation ne peuvent être que conquis par ces récits, alliant puissance musicale et profondeur émotionnelle.

After unveiling a few singles from the album, Belgium’s Worlds Beyond and their symphonic metal make their comeback with Rhapsody of Life. Scheduled for self-release on January 31st, this opus is a celebration of human existence.

Founded in 2017 in Ghent by Tijmen Matthys, the Belgian sextet really began their symphonic metal epic in the midst of the COVID crisis with a debut album, Symphony of Dawn, released on December 12th, 2020. The band now follows up with their second musical project, Rhapsody of Life, again combining guitar, violin, symphony orchestra and crystalline vocals. Occupying a special place in their hearts and wishing to give deep meaning to their new work, the members of Worlds Beyond decided that each track should highlight a specific life experience.
This second opus opens with “Familiar Skies”, a song about the passage of time and the memories it can bring. The introduction to this track features Ewoud Dekoninck’s bass strings, accompanied by Robbe Adriaens‘ epic keyboard. There’s a pronounced musical variety here, with all the band members taking part, a sign of a certain instrumental richness. It’s Tijmen who kicks off “Unwind Our Story” with his guitar, followed by more “metal” passages than usual, interspersed with Valerie De Kempe‘s lyrical flights. This track, about the loss of one’s own identity in a relationship, stands out for its more extreme aspect, making it undoubtedly one of the most striking on the album!
Seemingly bucolic, the next song, “Sleepless Dreams” explores, with the help of the vocalist’s enchanting melody, the boundary between life and death. Not to be outdone, “Breaking Free” begins with similar tones, but soon picks up speed with Jakob Declercq‘s violin, magnificently conveying the theme of emancipation and personal liberation. Jakob returns at the start of “The Calling” to broach the subject of creative inspiration, a subject that will return in part in “The Spark”, where his instrument continues to resonate with harmony. Far from being the only one to enjoy himself on this opus, Tijmen doesn’t disappoint with his guitar and his numerous solos, notably in “The Calling”, “Beyond Reality” and “One With The Stars”, the latter two evoking the meaning of life and personal evolution.
Emotional rebirth and deep human connection are at the heart of “Enchantment”, a particularly spellbinding track, as much for Valerie‘s grandiose vocals as for the virtuosity of the musicians. Special mention must go to the trio of Wout Debacker (drums), Tijmen and Jakob, who offer us a true moment of complicity and musical complexity. Similarly, “The Moment” showcases the band’s instrumentalists with a minimalist composition that, as its name suggests, urges us to live in the moment.
Rhapsody of Life ends on a high note with its ten-minute eponymous track, which opens with a reading of ‘All the world’s a stage’, an excerpt from the monologue in William Shakespeare‘s play « As You Like It ». The piano notes that follow are surprisingly reminiscent of the film’s main theme… Halloween! The title track is the quintessence of the project, bringing together all the themes addressed in this new musical production.
Evoking profound issues throughout, Worlds Beyond‘s Rhapsody of Life demonstrates the band’s talent in the symphonic metal world, with a more accomplished album than its predecessor. Fans of Nightwish and Within Temptation are bound to be won over by these tales of musical power and emotional depth.
