Dès les premières notes, on a en tête qu’un groupe n’a jamais aussi bien porté son nom. On croule sous une avalanche de riffs et de rythmes endiablés. L’ensemble prend place dans une ambiance festive, d’où on sent tout de même poindre une note d’agressivité. L’ajout de saxophone, notamment sur “Nureyev Said It Best” nous plonge dans l’esprit post punk qu’on retrouve bien souvent sur la scène anglaise actuelle. Mais si l’on entend cette sonorité qu’on apprécie beaucoup, Avalanche Party nous surprend ensuite en y incorporant bien d’autres éléments. En effet, musicalement “Shake the Slack” se nourrit de sonorités assez old school entre rock’n’ roll originel et post punk moderne. On entend par moments des sonorités qui rappellent à notre oreille les grandes lignes de certains albums de Muse ou encore de David Bowie. Si les premiers titres nous entraînent dans une frénésie musicale, la suite s’apaise un peu, dans une sorte de douce mélancolie, dans des mélodies plus planantes et aériennes. Avalanche Party nous raccroche par moments à des rythmes plus rapides, jouant sur les tempos pour venir donner un vrai relief à cet opus. La batterie joue un rôle crucial dans les compositions, et est souvent mise en avant, notamment dans “The Noise Between Us”. L’introduction puissante de “Slinky” et son saxophone lourd, grave, majestueux, en font un titre remarquable au milieu de Der Traum Über Alles. “Chainz” nous emmène dans un monde plein de mystère et de nuances. “Target”, avant dernier titre de l’opus, repart dans un vrai mood post punk anglo saxon. C’est “Collateral Damage” qui clôt cet album, nous emmenant dans des rythmes déstructurés, et un esprit entre psychédélisme et industriel. Les éléments rythmiques aux accents électroniques nous transportent dans un univers encore différent. Der Traum Über Alles démarre donc sur les chapeaux de roue avant de se poser pour terminer sur un feu d’artifice rythmique. Un schéma plutôt inhabituel qui peut déstabiliser au premier abord mais qui, grâce au talent du groupe, trouve un sens certain et nous accroche.
Der Traum Über Alles est un opus unique. Il est impossible d’en écouter un seul extrait et de penser en avoir saisi le sens. Les influences sont multiples, les compositions très différentes et variées, faisant vivre plusieurs expériences en une. Avalanche Party est une découverte à faire, un voyage à tenter, car on sait qu’il peut plaire à un grand nombre.

Yorkshire band Avalanche Party have released their new album Der Traum Über Alles (Le Rêve Avant Tout in French) via AMK. The eleven catchy tracks, for which the English scene has the secret, will be released on February 7th, 2025. Here’s a sneak preview to whet your appetite.

From the very first notes, it’s clear that a band has never lived up to its name. We’re overwhelmed by an avalanche of riffs and frenzied rhythms. The whole thing takes place in a festive atmosphere, with a hint of aggression. The addition of saxophone, notably on “Nureyev Said It Best”, plunges us into the post-punk spirit often found on today’s English scene. But while we hear this much-appreciated sound, Avalanche Party then surprises us by incorporating many other elements. In fact, musically, “Shake the Slack” is fuelled by old-school sounds, somewhere between original rock’n’roll and modern post-punk. At times, we hear sounds that remind us of the main lines of certain Muse or David Bowie albums. While the first few tracks take us into a musical frenzy, the rest of the album calms down a little, in a sort of gentle melancholy, with more soaring, airy melodies. At times, Avalanche Party hooks us up with faster rhythms, playing with tempos to give this opus a real edge. The drums play a crucial role in the compositions, and are often brought to the fore, particularly in “The Noise Between Us”. The powerful introduction to “Slinky” and its heavy, low, majestic saxophone make it a remarkable track in the middle of Der Traum Über Alles. “Chainz” takes us into a world full of mystery and nuance. “Target”, the penultimate track on the opus, takes us back into a true Anglo-Saxon post-punk mood. Collateral Damage” brings the album to a close, taking us into unstructured rhythms and a spirit somewhere between psychedelic and industrial. Rhythmic elements with electronic overtones transport us into yet another universe. Der Traum Über Alles gets off to a flying start, before settling down to a rhythmic fireworks finale. It’s a rather unusual pattern, which may be disconcerting at first, but thanks to the band’s talent, it makes sense and hooks us in.
Der Traum Über Alles is a unique opus. It’s impossible to listen to a single extract and think you’ve grasped its meaning. The influences are multiple, the compositions very different and varied, providing several experiences in one. Avalanche Party is a discovery to be made, a journey to be attempted, because we know that it can appeal to a large number of people.
