Après deux EP prometteurs, Oversize dévoile enfin son premier album Vital Signs via SharpTone Records. Originaire du Royaume-Uni, le groupe crée un mélange unique de post-hardcore, de métal alternatif, de shoegaze et d’emo. Avec son mélange de riffs lourds et d’atmosphères éthérées, Vital Signs nous livrera des mélodies sombres mais captivantes le 28 février.

L’album s’ouvre sur « Stalling », un début lent mais puissant qui transporte l’auditeur dans l’atmosphère du disque. Les influences shoegaze se font même sentir sur « Are You With Me ? », où les guitares lourdes de réverbération et les mélodies aériennes donnent un ton à la fois rêveur et mélancolique. Les choses prennent une tournure plus lourde avec « Fall Apart », comme si le groupe avait soudainement augmenté le volume. La basse se démarque avec une ligne profonde, reflétant parfois la mélodie de la guitare pour renforcer l’intensité.
« Something Clean » commence par une ligne de guitare solitaire avant que l’ensemble du groupe n’entre en scène. Ce morceau se démarque des précédents, laissant entrevoir un côté plus heavy d’Oversize. Un bref moment de paroles hurlées émerge de manière inattendue, il nous surprend mais nous laisse également souhaiter plus de moments comme celui-ci. La chanson change d’intensité tout en conservant une mélodie qui reste dans l’esprit. « Daretomove », un single sorti précédemment, suit avec une énergie dynamique, se terminant sur une note abrupte qui laisse un impact.
Plus vif, « The Incline » est un hymne qui résonne fortement avec les paroles « feeling from the incline, tell yourself it’s alright and then it’s gone » (se sentir sur l’inclinaison, se dire que tout va bien et puis c’est parti). « From The Hell » se distingue par son intensité, invitant subtilement au headbanging. En revanche, « Salt » offre un moment plus calme et plus profond. Avec des paroles proclamant « The darkness hides the light », elle résume le sentiment général de l’album : des mélodies sombres et profondes où l’on sent parfois poindre la lumière.
Alors que l’album touche à sa fin, « Vacant », la dernière sortie de l’album, mène à la dernière chanson de l’album. « Vacant » parle du manque de communication et de connexion avec les gens qui nous entourent. Le groupe décrit sa chanson éponyme, « Vital Signs », comme une réflexion sur le deuil et l’acceptation de la perte. « Comme le reste de l’album, la chanson tourne autour d’un voyage de deuil et de l’acceptation de la perte. Nous avons pensé que le texte ‘Vital Signs’ était le résumé parfait pour l’ensemble de l’album ».
Le premier album d’Oversize est une déclaration forte, prouvant qu’ils ont trouvé un équilibre entre l’intensité écrasante et les textures rêveuses, laissant une impression durable. Avec dix chansons, l’intensité de l’album croît lentement au fil des morceaux, créant une écoute facile que l’on pourrait répéter pendant un certain temps. Avec Vital Signs, le groupe a créé un son moderne qui nous rappelle encore les années 90 et qui ne laisse pas de doute sur le fait qu’une fois sur scène, le quintet doit libérer une énergie incroyable.

The album opens with « Stalling », a slow but powerful beginning that carries the listener into the atmosphere of the record. The shoegaze influences even become evident in « Are You With Me? », where the reverb-heavy guitars and airy melodies set a dreamy yet melancholic tone. Things take a heavier turn with « Fall Apart », as if the band suddenly turned up the volume. The bass stands out with a deep line, sometimes mirroring the guitar melody to reinforce the intensity.
« Something Clean » starts with a lone guitar line before the full band kicks in. This track stands apart from the earlier ones, hinting at a heavier side of Oversize. A brief moment of screamed lyrics emerges unexpectedly, it surprises us but it’s also leaving us wishing for more moments like this. The song shifts in intensity while maintaining a melody that lingers in the mind. « Daretomove », a previously released single, follows with a dynamic energy, ending on an abrupt note that leaves an impact.
Livelier in pace, « The Incline » delivers an anthemic moment, with the lyrics “feeling from the incline, tell yourself it’s alright and then it’s gone” resonating strongly. « From The Hell » stands out with its intensity, subtly inviting headbanging. In contrast, « Salt » offers a calmer and deeper moment. With lyrics proclaiming, “The darkness hides the light.” it encapsulates the album’s overall feeling: dark and deep melodies where we feel glimpses of light that occasionally break through.
As the album nears its end, « Vacant », the latest release, leads into the closing track. « Vacant » talks about the lack of communication and connection with the people around us. The band describes their eponymous song, « Vital Signs », as a reflection on grief and the acceptance of loss. “Lyrically, much like the rest of the album, the song revolves around a journey of grief and the acceptance of loss. We felt the lyric ‘Vital Signs’ was the perfect summary for the album as a whole.”
Oversize’s debut is a strong statement, proving they have found a balance between crushing intensity and dreamy textures, leaving a lasting impression. Spanning ten songs, the intensity of the album is slowly growing through the tracks creating quite an easy listen that we could have on repeat for a while. With Vital Signs, the band created a modern sound that still reminds us of the 90’s and that doesn’t let the doubt that once on stage the quintet must unleash an incredible energy.
