Retour au Trix pour une soirée qu’on attendait depuis des mois! Les américains de Touché Amoré sont de passage en Belgique pour présenter leur album Spiral In A Straight Line, sorti en octobre dernier, au public européen. Pour les accompagner ils ont choisi leurs compatriotes de Trauma Ray ainsi que les allemands de Between Bodies. Le concert devait avoir lieu au club mais vu la vitesse de vente des tickets le concert a été déplacé dans la grande salle, et vu le nombre de gens présents à notre arrivée on comprend vite ce choix!

Suite à quelques petits encombrements routiers, une règle à Anvers, nous arrivons dans la salle un peu après le début du set de Between Bodies. La formation allemande semble avoir déjà bien accroché le public et il ne nous faudra qu’un titre pour rejoindre la fête transportés par l’indie punk du groupe. Même si leur style dénote un peu, les morceaux très réussis portés par les multiples lignes de chant font clairement mouche! Un drapeau antifasciste trône sur un des amplis et vient parfaitement coller au côté punk de la formation. On découvre le groupe ce soir et le bout de set qu’on réussit à voir nous fait forte impression. Les derniers morceaux terminent de nous convaincre et nous laissent avec un très bon souvenir de la prestation des allemands. Une belle découverte qu’on espère revoir sur des plateaux punks et qu’on ne manquera pas de suivre de près.

Changement de plateau rapide et c’est parti pour les texans de Trauma Ray. Il ne faudra que quelques secondes aux américains pour conquérir nos cœurs. Leur musique mélange habile entre shoegaze et tout plein d’influences colle parfaitement à ce que le public belge attend ce soir. En quelques minutes le groupe se met le Trix dans la poche. Le silence règne pour laisser les morceaux du groupe révéler toute leur puissance. Capuche sur la tête, Uriel Aliva nous emporte avec son chant puissant et dévastateur. Le groupe excelle en tout point en nous présentant en grande partie les titres de l’album Chameleon sorti en octobre dernier.  Uriel fera d’ailleurs une blague sur le calme de la salle jusqu’à ce qu’une personne du public ne crie « c’est parce qu’on vous aime » en Anglais. Et effectivement on aime beaucoup ce que les texans nous propose. Ca respire la maturité, l’envie de nous émouvoir et cette force musicale que peuvent avoir des groupes comme Slowdive, groupe qui est d’ailleurs à l’origine de la rencontre entre les créateurs du groupe. On ne voit pas le temps passer en leur compagnie et lorsque le dernier titre est annoncé on se dit qu’on aurait bien pris un peu plus des riffs et rythmiques magistraux du groupe. Le public les applaudit longuement, signe qu’on les reverra surement très vite en tête d’affiche dans le coin. En tout cas on l’espère fort et on rentre de ce pas se plonger dans leur jeune mais déjà passionnante discographie.

L’heure est venue pour Touché Amoré de nous envelopper de sa vague post hardcore. Les californiens arrivent en force au son de « Nobody’s » et « Art Offcial » et c’est parti pour une heure de tubes en puissance! On a beau connaître le groupe depuis des années chaque montée sur scène nous colle les frissons en quelques secondes. La voix de Jeremy Bolm y est évidemment pour beaucoup et il excelle une voix de plus, malgré un problème de voix évident sur les échanges avec le public. D’ailleurs ce qui nous marque, c’est que le public belge ne mettra que quelques secondes à se plonger corps et âme dans le set en venant hurler les paroles dans le micro que Jeremy dès que possible. Cette communion forte est magique et montre à quel point le groupe californien a su au fil des années se créer une fanebase fidèle qui connait les morceaux, aussi bien récents que plus anciens, sur le bout des doigts. Clayton Stevens et Nick Steinhardt sont imparables derrière leurs guitares, et les riffs de « Nine » ou « Reminders » viennent nous cueillir sans effort. L’émotion est palpable dans la salle et l’enchaînement « Upper/Downers » et « Come Heroine » vient laisser Elliot Babin à la batterie et Tyler Kirby à la basse nous livrer une section rythmique des plus captivante, qui nous emporte tel un tsunami.  Les titres bien que courts regorgent de parties plus puissantes les unes que les autres, et le chant de Jeremy ne cesse de nous surprendre au fur et à mesure de la performance. Les titres issus de Spiral In A Straight Line sont déjà connus de tous et « Hal Ashby » confirmera qu’il est déjà devenu un classique des californiens. Le groupe mettra également beaucoup en avant l’album Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me (2011) pour notre plus grand plaisir! Et lorsque les deux titres d’ouverture de ce disque s’enchaînent on reprend les paroles en chœur tant ces titres font parti de notre histoire musicale. « New Halloween », « Disasters » ou encore « Force Of Habbit » seront de véritables moment de bravoure du set avec le groupe en totale osmose avec son public. La fin arrive déjà mais il reste le magnifique « Flowers And You » pour chanter une fois de plus à tue tête. Le groupe quitte la scène en remerciant chaleureusement le public pour son accueil et son soutien puis revient pour « Amends » qui terminera d’émouvoir toute l’assistance. Un dernier salut et un dernier merci et voilà les californiens partis en nous laissant retourné par un set d’anthologie qui aura clairement tenu toutes ses promesses. On espère une nouvelle tournée européenne au plus vite avec des dates dans des villes plus petites. En tout cas on repart émus et subjugués par ce que Touché Amoré nous ont proposé ce soir!

Back at Trix for a night we’ve been waiting months for! American band Touché Amoré are in Belgium to present their album Spiral In A Straight Line, released last October, to a European audience. To accompany them, they’ve chosen their compatriots Trauma Ray and Germany’s Between Bodies. The concert was due to take place at the club, but given the speed with which tickets were selling out, it was moved to the main hall, and given the number of people there when we arrived, it’s easy to understand why!

Following a few minor traffic jams, a rule in Antwerp, we arrived at the venue a little after the start of Between Bodies‘ set. The German outfit seem to have already got the crowd hooked, and it only takes one song for us to join the party, carried away by the band’s indie punk. Even if their style is a bit different, the highly successful tracks, with their multiple vocal lines, clearly hit the nail on the head! An anti-fascist flag is displayed on one of the amps, perfectly in keeping with the band’s punk edge. We were discovering the band tonight and the bit of their set that we managed to see made a strong impression on us. The final tracks were enough to convince us, leaving us with a very good memory of the German band’s performance. A great discovery that we hope to see again on punk stages and that we’ll be sure to follow closely.

A quick change of set and it’s off for Trauma Ray from Texas. It only takes a few seconds for the Americans to win our hearts. Their music is a skilful blend of shoegaze and a whole host of influences, perfectly in tune with what the Belgian audience is expecting this evening. Within minutes the band had the Trix in their pocket. Silence reigns, allowing the band’s songs to reveal all their power. With a hood over his head, Uriel Aliva sweeps us away with his powerful, devastating vocals. The band excel in every respect, performing a large proportion of tracks from the Chameleon album released last October. In fact, Uriel makes a joke about how quiet the room is until someone in the audience shouts out ‘that’s because we love you » And indeed, we really like what the Texans have to offer. It exudes maturity, the desire to move us and the musical strength that bands like Slowdive can have, a band that was the origin of the meeting between the band’s creators. Time flies in their company, and when the last track is announced, you think you could have done with a bit more of the band’s masterful riffs and rhythms. The crowd give them a long round of applause, a sign that we’ll probably be seeing them headline again very soon. We certainly hope so, and we’re off to immerse ourselves in their young but already fascinating discography.

It’s time for Touché Amoré to wrap us in their post-hardcore wave. The Californians arrive in force to the sound of ‘Nobody’s’ and ‘Art Offcial’ and it’s off to an hour of powerful hits! You may have known the band for years, but every time they take to the stage, you’re left shivering in a matter of seconds. Jeremy Bolm‘s voice obviously has a lot to do with it, and he excels once again, despite an obvious vocal problem in his talking exchanges with the audience. What’s more, it only takes a few seconds for the Belgian audience to immerse themselves body and soul in the set, shouting the lyrics into Jeremy‘s microphone as soon as they can. This powerful communion is magical, and shows just how much the Californian band has built up a loyal fanbase over the years, who know their songs, both recent and older, inside out. Clayton Stevens and Nick Steinhardt are unstoppable behind their guitars, and the riffs of ‘Nine’ and ‘Reminders’ grab you effortlessly. The emotion in the room is palpable, and the combination of ‘Upper/Downers’ and ‘Come Heroine’ lets Elliot Babin on drums and Tyler Kirby on bass deliver a captivating rhythm section that sweeps us along like a tsunami. Although the tracks are short, they are packed with powerful parts, and Jeremy‘s vocals never cease to surprise as the performance progresses. The tracks from Spiral In A Straight Line are already familiar to everyone, and ‘Hal Ashby’ confirms that it has already become a Californian classic. The band will also be putting the spotlight on their 2011 album Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me, much to our delight! And when the two opening tracks from this album come on, we’ll be singing along to the lyrics because these songs are so much a part of our musical history. ‘New Halloween’, “Disasters” and “Force Of Habbit” were real highlights of the set, with the band in total osmosis with their audience. The end was already in sight, but there was still the magnificent ‘Flowers And You’ to sing at the top of your lungs once more. The band leave the stage, thanking the audience warmly for their welcome and support, then return for ‘Amends’, which finishes by moving the whole audience. A final hello and a final thank you, and the Californians are off, leaving us reeling from an anthology set that clearly lived up to all its promises. We’re hoping for a new European tour as soon as possible, with dates in smaller towns. In any case, we’ll be leaving moved and captivated by what Touché Amoré had to offer tonight!
