Ce premier trimestre marque le retour en force de Avantasia, toujours mené par Tobias Sammet! Pour ce dixième album, le musicien allemand vient proposer dix nouveaux titres, non liés par un arc narratif cette fois-ci. Here Be Dragons sera disponible dès le 28 février via Napalm Records. Comme toujours on a hâte de retrouver la bande d’amis fidèles du projet ainsi que de découvrir quelle(s) nouvelle(s) voix viennent rejoindre l’aventure musicale qui dure depuis déjà 25 ans!

Tobias Sammet nous propose un retour en force avec « Creepshow », qui ouvre l’album. En solo pour ce titre le créateur du projet Avantasia nous propose un titre calibré pour le live avec un refrain à chanter en chœur. On retrouve un peu des sonorités de son groupe Edguy dans ce titre mais sans que cela devienne un titre de cette formation. Arrive ensuite Geoff Tate (ex Queensrÿche) pour le morceau titre. Présent sur le projet depuis de nombreuses années aussi bien en live que sur album, il nous livre une prestation magistrale en duo avec Tobias. Le morceau vient se parer d’un très beau côté prog magnifié par des orchestrations magistrales. Retour d’autres habitués pour la suite avec Michael Kiske (Helloween) sur « The Moorland » , Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids) sur « Phantasmagoria » ou encore Bob Catley (Magnum) sur « Bring On The Night ». Dans ces trois titres composés avec brio pour coller le plus possible à l’univers des chanteurs présents on passe d’un morceau tout droit sorti de l’univers du groupe à la citrouille, à un titre bien heavy puis un autre très mélodique. Tobias et ses amis offrent à chaque fois des communions vocales totales qui filent des frissons, le tout magnifié par le travail sonore de Sascha Paeth qu’on retrouve à la guitare et à la production. Les chœurs sont très présents sur cet album, comme les orchestrations, et apportent une véritable dimension supplémentaire à des morceaux déjà prenants à souhait. Si vous aimez Kamelot, vous serez servis sur cet album puisque deux des chanteurs du groupe sont présents. Sur « The Witch » c’est Tommy Karevik qui se lance dans une démonstration où les claviers sont légions et qui colle parfaitement au son actuel du groupe américain. En fin d’album c’est Roy Khan (chanteur de Kamelot de 1998 à 2011) qui nous émeut sur le magnifique « Everybody’s Here Until The End » où le piano occupe une place prédominante. Dans les noms bien connus des fans du groupe, voilà Adrienne Cowan sur « Avalon »! Là encore la connaissance de Tobias de son amie est totale et le morceau nous replonge aisément dans leurs duos mythiques, qu’on adore retrouver en live. On imagine d’ailleurs aisément voir celui-ci rejoindre la setlist sur la prochaine tournée. Enfin, comme toujours Tobias n’hésite pas à amener de nouvelles têtes dans la formation, et pour cet album c’est Kenny Leckremo de H.E.A.T qui vient poser sa voix sur « Against The Wind ». Ce titre bien hard rock donne au chanteur une belle occasion de montrer sa puissance vocale. Une belle adition à la liste de vocalistes de grand talent qu’on sera ravis de retrouver soit en live si possible soit sur de futurs titres d’Avantasia!
Loin des derniers albums composés comme de véritables histoires musicales, Here Be Dragons nous ramène aux albums des débuts d’Avantasia. Une suite de morceaux mettant en avant les talents de composition et de chanteur de Tobias Sammet tout en laissant tout ses ami.e.s s’exprimer dans des morceaux sur mesure. Une belle réussite qui garde une très belle consistance de bout en bout et qui nous refait plonger avec joie dans le monde si prolifique du maestro allemand. A foncer écouter dès sa sortie!
Avantasia seront en live à travers toute l’Europe cette année, avec un date à l’Ancienne Belgique de Bruxelles le 15 mars ainsi qu’à L’Olympia de Paris le 16 mars!

This first quarter marks the return in force of Avantasia, still led by Tobias Sammet! For his tenth album, the German musician offers ten new tracks, this time not linked by a narrative arc. Here Be Dragons will be available from February 28th via Napalm Records. As ever, we can’t wait to catch up with the project’s faithful band of friends, and to discover which new voice(s) will be joining the musical adventure that’s already been going on for 25 years!
Tobias Sammet is back in force with ‘Creepshow’, which opens the album. Solo on this track, the creator of the Avantasia project offers us a track calibrated for live performance, with a chorus to sing along to. There’s a hint of his band Edguy’s sound in this track, but it doesn’t become a Edguy track. Geoff Tate (ex-Queensrÿche) comes in next for the title track. A long-standing member of the project, both live and on album, he delivers a masterful performance in duet with Tobias. The track is adorned with a beautiful prog edge, magnified by masterful orchestrations. Michael Kiske (Helloween) returns on ‘The Moorland’, Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids) on ‘Phantasmagoria’ and Bob Catley (Magnum) on ‘Bring On The Night’. In these three tracks, brilliantly composed to fit as closely as possible with the universe of the singers present, we go from a track straight out of the pumpkin band’s universe, to a really heavy track and then another very melodic one. Each time, Tobias and his friends offer a total vocal communion that sends shivers down your spine, all magnified by the sound work of Sascha Paeth on guitar and production. The choirs are very much in evidence on this album, as are the orchestrations, adding a real extra dimension to tracks that are already as gripping as you could wish for. If you like Kamelot, you’re in for a treat on this album, as two of the band’s singers are present. On ‘The Witch’ it’s Tommy Karevik who launches into a keyboard-heavy demonstration that fits perfectly with the American band’s current sound. At the end of the album, it’s Roy Khan (Kamelot‘s singer from 1998 to 2011) who moves us on the magnificent ‘Everybody’s Here Until The End’, where the piano plays a predominant role. Another name well known to fans of the band is Adrienne Cowan on ‘Avalon’! Here again, Tobias’ knowledge of his girlfriend is total, and the track takes us back to their legendary duets, which we love to hear live. We can easily imagine this one joining the setlist on the next tour. Finally, as ever, Tobias doesn’t hesitate to bring new faces into the band, and for this album it’s Kenny Leckremo from H.E.A.T who adds his vocals to ‘Against The Wind’. This hard rock track gives the singer a great opportunity to show off his vocal power. A fine addition to the list of highly talented vocalists we’ll be delighted to see again, either live if possible or on future Avantasia tracks!
Far from the latest albums composed as real musical stories, Here Be Dragons takes us back to Avantasia‘s early albums. A series of tracks showcasing Tobias Sammet‘s talents as a composer and singer, while allowing his friends to express themselves in tailor-made pieces. It’s a fine achievement that maintains a fine consistency from start to finish, and takes us back into the prolific world of the German maestro with gusto. Don’t miss it!
