Avec The Calling, son deuxième album prévu pour le 21 mars, Areis confirme son identité musicale unique, façonnée par un savant mélange de genres (black, hardcore, melo-death) créant ainsi cet album de blackened hardcore. Originaire d’Occitanie en France, le groupe intégre à sa musique une atmosphère sombre et percutante, appuyée par des thématiques occultes et un enracinement culturel fort qu’on retrouve facilement dans ce deuxième opus. Dès le premier titre, « Shattered Lands », Areis nous plonge dans son univers ténébreux et immersif, posant ainsi les bases d’un album à la fois intense et envoûtant. « Forgotten Sun » montre des influences black metal plus marquées, avec une batterie imposante et un tempo plus lent qui accentue son caractère oppressant. Avec le titre « Rise From The Ruins », le groupe semble faire écho à son propre nom puisque “areis” en ancien occitan signifie « s’élever« , les paroles sur un thème occulte et évoquant la destruction du monde par le feu ne manquent pas de nous marquer avec son refrain « We take the burden Of ending this world while you get ready for the next« . Dans « We Are », les riffs de guitare rapides et la batterie martelante évoquent une intensité implacable, tandis que la fin s’étire en fondu, laissant planer une atmosphère quasi mystique.
Le groupe profite de cette atmosphère mystique pour proposer un moment plus doux avec « Lavender Turned into Ashes », un interlude acoustique où les chœurs, presque religieux, montent en puissance avant d’intégrer un cri lointain mais déchirant. Ces instants contrastent habilement avec des morceaux plus violents comme « Primordio Solis », où le hardcore reprend ses droits avec une basse marquée et un rythme effréné. « Behind The Gate » poursuit cette lancée, préparant le terrain à un breakdown attendu, renforcé par un solo de guitare maîtrisé qui prouve encore une fois que ce mélange de genre n’a rien de sorcier pour Areis.
Mais c’est avec « D’ocre et de sang » que le quatuor frappe un grand coup. Ce titre puissant prend aux tripes et illustre parfaitement la capacité du groupe à allier émotion brute et technique affûtée. Enfin, The Calling s’achève sur une note à la fois énergique et mélodique avec son morceau éponyme, clôturant un voyage sonore immersif et cohérent.
Loin d’être un simple patchwork de styles, cet album brille par son homogénéité et sa capacité à créer un équilibre entre violence et mélodie. L’utilisation de l’occitan, notamment dans « How Far », ajoute une dimension unique à l’album, enracinant encore davantage Areis dans son héritage culturel tout en lui conférant une aura singulière dans le paysage du blackened hardcore.

From the very first track, ‘Shattered Lands’, Areis plunges us into their dark, immersive world, laying the foundations for an album that is both intense and spellbinding. ‘Forgotten Sun’ has more black metal influences, with imposing drums and a slower tempo that accentuates its oppressive character. With the title track ‘Rise From The Ruins’, the band seem to be echoing their own name, since ‘areis’ in ancient Occitan means ‘to rise’, and the lyrics, based on an occult theme and evoking the destruction of the world by fire, leave a lasting impression with their refrain ‘We take the burden of ending this world while you get ready for the next’. In ‘We Are’, the fast guitar riffs and pounding drums evoke a relentless intensity, while the ending fades out, leaving an almost mystical atmosphere.
The band take advantage of this mystical atmosphere to offer a gentler moment with ‘Lavender Turned into Ashes’, an acoustic interlude where the almost religious choirs build in power before integrating a distant but heart-rending cry. These moments contrast nicely with more violent tracks like ‘Primordio Solis’, where the hardcore takes over with a strong bass and a frantic rhythm. ‘Behind The Gate’ continues in the same vein, paving the way for an expected breakdown, reinforced by a masterful guitar solo that proves once again that this mix of genres is not rocket science for Areis.
But it’s with ‘D’ocre et de sang’ that the quartet strike a blow. This powerful track grips the listener and perfectly illustrates the band’s ability to combine raw emotion and honed technique. Finally, « The Calling » ends on an energetic yet melodic note with its eponymous track, bringing an immersive and coherent sonic journey to a close.
Far from being a simple patchwork of styles, this album shines for its homogeneity and its ability to create a balance between violence and melody. The use of Occitan, particularly in ‘How Far’, adds a unique dimension to the album, further entrenching Areis in its cultural heritage and giving it a singular aura in the blackened hardcore landscape.
