Le post punk est à son apogée, et la liste des groupes à ne pas louper dans ce style s’allonge de jour en jour. Cette semaine, c’est du côté de Tours que nous vous emmenons pour (re)découvrir le trio //LESS, véritable tourbillon de noise rock qui vient vous crier tout son désespoir dans leur premier album, Crawl In The Blur, sortant chez A Tant Rêver Du Roi ce 21 mars.

//Less vont venir vous frapper de plein fouet, mais commençons par les présentations avec le titre « That Kind of Man ». Roman Frelier Borda au chant se présente comme un homme en colère, qui a des choses à dire. Un homme avec de fortes convictions, et un homme d’art. On l’aura compris d’entré de jeu, préparez vous à entendre un album fort ! Niveau sonorité, oubliez la guitare, il n’y en a tout simplement pas dans cet album. En contrepartie, c’est un véritable mur de son qui se dresse devant nous avec une batterie, deux basses et un micro qui s’élance dans de belles distorsions vocales. L’album alterne entre post-punk pur comme sur « Bury The Pig » où l’on vient critiquer la police raciste, ou la noise bien grasse avec ‘Burn » qui nous donne envie de tout cramer autour de nous face à une telle rage. On imagine sans mal les concerts qui doivent être un moment libérateur à la fois pour les artistes que pour les spectateurs. Le mur de son se propage dans une folie saturée, de quoi imager à la perfection le combat acharné contre nos démons intérieurs et l’envie de disparaitre. //LESS calme le jeu quelques instants pour écouter nos pouls se ralentir avec « My Sentence », dans un titre plus rock. La dépression sera le thème dominant d’une bonne partie des chansons. Elle est décrite parfois sous le prisme des pensées qui s’entrechoque dans notre cerveau, mais bien souvent par les douleurs et autres sensations physiques handicapantes, parfaitement expliqué dans « The Reason », jusqu’à amener les pensées suicidaires de « Make Them Bleed ». C’est une véritable expérience physique que d’écouter le destin de notre personnage principal, sombrant jusqu’à douter de sa propre existence. Une illustration d’une vie complétement dans le brouillard, où la batterie de Matthieu Couffrant ne sait plus à quelle vitesse aller, mais qui ne cesse de nous marteler. Il faut dire que la joie a totalement quitté la pièce sur « Joy Is Sad », et aucune lueur d’espoir n’est à l’horizon.
//LESS réussissent à nous illustrer en un album la vie d’un homme plein de souffrance, luttant contre sa vie, contre ses démons, et regardant le monde extérieur, aussi pourri que nos pensées. Difficile de s’en sortir dans ce monde, et c’est un véritable combat qui a lieu dans nos oreilles. C’est brut d’émotions et prenant aux tripes.

This week, we’re taking you to Tours to (re)discover the trio //LESS, a veritable whirlwind of noise rock who have come to cry out all their despair in their debut album, Crawl In The Blur, out on A Tant Rêver Du Roi this March 21st.

//Less are going to come at you with full force, but let’s start with the introductory track “That Kind of Man”. Roman Frelier Borda on vocals presents himself as an angry man with things to say. A man of strong convictions, and a man of art. It’s clear from the outset: get ready for a powerful album! In terms of sound, forget the guitar – there simply isn’t any on this album. Instead, we’re treated to a veritable wall of sound, with drums, two basses and a microphone that blasts out in beautiful vocal distortions. The album alternates between pure post-punk, as on “Bury The Pig”, which criticizes the racist police, and greasy noise on “Burn”, which makes you want to burn everything around you in the face of such rage. It’s easy to imagine the concerts being a liberating moment for both artists and audience. The wall of sound spreads out in saturated madness, perfectly imitating the relentless battle against our inner demons and the desire to disappear. //LESS calm things down for a few moments to listen to our pulses slow down with “My Sentence”, in a rockier track. Depression is the dominant theme of a good part of the songs.It’s sometimes described through the prism of the thoughts colliding in our brains, but very often through pain and other disabling physical sensations, perfectly explained in “The Reason”, right up to the suicidal thoughts of “Make Them Bleed”. It’s a real physical experience to listen to the fate of our main character, sinking to the point of doubting his own existence. An illustration of a life completely in the fog, where Matthieu Couffrant‘s drums no longer know how fast to go, but keep hammering away. It has to be said that joy has totally left the room on “Joy Is Sad”, and there’s no glimmer of hope on the horizon.
//LESS manage to illustrate in one album the life of a man full of suffering, fighting against his life, against his demons, and looking at the outside world, as rotten as our thoughts. It’s hard to get by in this world, and it’s a real battle that takes place in our ears. It’s emotionally raw and gripping.
