Direction l’Ancienne Belgique et Bruxelles pour un des concerts que j’attends le plus cette année, celui d’Avantasia. Le projet mené par Tobias Sammet fait ce soir son premier arrêt dans une salle belge! Les gradins restent fermés ce soir mais la configuration de la salle proposée est pleine à craquer pour fêter la sortie de Here Be Dragons comme il se doit. Prêt pour une aventure de plus de deux heures dans les mondes du musicien allemand et de sa troupe?

Le rideau de la salle est fermé pour conserver l’effet de surprise, et il ne s’ouvrira qu’une fois l’intro de « Creepshow » terminée. Le morceau d’ouverture du dernier album en date fait mouche et laisse Tobias en solo pour ce titre se familiariser avec le public belge visiblement d’enfin pouvoir voir le projet dans leur salle favorite! Sur scène les musiciens et choristes sont en place pour une soirée digne de tous les superlatifs. Le décor est majestueux avec un grand portail trônant devant l’écran de fond de scène ainsi que des escaliers et autres plateformes collant parfaitement visuellement avec l’aventure qui nous attend. Dans le trio de choristes niché en hauteur à droite de la scène, la première à rejoindre Tobias sur le devant de la scène sera Adrienne Cowan (Seven Spires) sur le titre « Reach Out For The Light » qu’elle maîtrise totalement. Sa puissance vocale est impressionnante et donne une nouvelle vie à ce titre issu du premier album d’Avantasia. Retour à l’album le plus récent avec l’arrivée sur scène de Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) encapuchonné qui nous livre, là encore une performance de folie. Côté musiciens on retrouve évidemment Sascha Paeth à la guitare qui nous livre des riffs dantesques tout au long du show. On soulignera d’ailleurs aussi la performance de folie du batteur de la formation qui ne cessera de marteler ses fûts tout au long des 2h35 de show!
Ayant vu Avantasia a plusieurs reprises, je suis ravi de voir arriver sur la setlist des titres peu joués comme « Devil In The Belfry » chanté par un Herbie Langhans (Firewind) au sommet de son art ou encore « Promised Land » qu’il partagera avec Eric Martin (Mr. Big) plus tard dans la soirée. La cammaraderie qui règne sur scène est évidente et fait plaisir à voir. Le public reprend chaque titre en chœur et en particulier les classiques comme « Dying For An Angel » qu’on a tous grand plaisir à retrouver ce soir. Dans les petits nouveaux qu’on voit débarquer dans le projet il y a Kenny Leckremo (H.E.A.T) qui offre lui aussi une performance d’anthologie sur l’excellent « Against The Wind ». En plus de Here Be Dragons, la troupe a décidé de mettre en avant ce soir l’album The Scarecrow (2008) avec pas moins de six titres joués dont l’excellent « The Toy Master » qui verra Tobias se faire installer un magnifique trône sur scène exclusivement pour ce titre.
Les titres longs de la discographie sont également de la partie puisque nous aurons le droit aux puissants et électriques « Let The Storm Descend Upon You » chanté par Tobias, Herbie et Kenny, « Here Be Dragons » chanté comme sur l’album par Tobias et Tommy, « The Wicked Symphony » chanté par Tommy, Kenny et Tobias et enfin « The Scarecrow » chanté par Herbie rejoint ensuite par Tobias. On parle là de quatre titres de dix minutes ou plus chacun qui laissent éclater toute la puissance d’Avantasia, des vocalistes présents et des musiciens. D’ailleurs Tobias n’hésitera pas à plusieurs reprises à laisser ses amis prendre le devant de la scène sans lui, signe de la confiance totale qu’il a dans ses ami.e.s vocalistes.
L’émotion est de mise lorsque Chiara Tricarico (Moonlight Haze) descend sur le devant de la scène pour le mythique « Farewell » qui est toujours un moment inoubliable des concerts de la troupe. D’ailleurs le show arrive à sa fin et c’est « Death Is Just A Feeling » qui viendra mettre fin à un set magistral de bout en bout. Mais Tobias reviendra sur scène rapidement avec son piano pour le très mélodique « Lucifer » avant de repartir de plus belle dans les titres toujours plus énergiques avec « Lost In Space ». Puis pour terminer en apothéose toute la troupe rejoint petit à petit la scène pour le medley « Sign Of The Cross/The Seven Angels », qui colle une dernière fois des frissons au public qui reprend une dernière fois les paroles en chœur.
Comme toujours Tobias Sammet et Avantasia ont livré un concert de grande qualité qui prouve que le heavy et le power métal ont encore de très belles heures devant eux. Tous les vocalistes présents étaient en grande forme et ont fait vivre de la plus belle des manières ces chansons qui nous font vibrer depuis toutes ces années. Un concert à la hauteur du projet. Il ne serait pas étonnant de revoir Avantasia débarquer en Belgique bientôt dans une salle bien plus grande tant l’accueil fut bon en ce soir de mars.

It’s off to the Ancienne Belgique and Brussels for one of the concerts I’m most looking forward to this year, that of Avantasia. The project led by Tobias Sammet makes its first stop at a Belgian venue tonight! The terraces remain closed tonight, but the venue is packed to the rafters to celebrate the release of Here Be Dragons in style. Are you ready for over two hours of adventure into the worlds of the German musician and his band?

The curtain is closed to maintain the surprise effect, and only opens once the intro to ‘Creepshow’ has finished. The opening track from the band’s latest album hits the nail on the head, leaving Tobias to solo on this track and familiarise himself with the Belgian audience, who are clearly delighted to finally be able to see the project in their favourite venue! On stage, the musicians and backing singers are in place for an evening worthy of every superlative. The set is majestic, with a huge portal in front of the backdrop screen, as well as staircases and other platforms that fit in perfectly with the adventure that awaits us. In the trio of backing singers nestled high up on stage right, the first to join Tobias at centre stage was Adrienne Cowan (Seven Spires) on the track ‘Reach Out For The Light’, which she mastered completely. Her vocal power is impressive and breathes new life into this track from Avantasia‘s first album. Back to the most recent album with the arrival on stage of Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) in a hood, who once again delivers a crazy performance. As for the musicians, Sascha Paeth is on guitar, delivering a series of Dantesque riffs throughout the show. The band’s drummer also puts in an insane performance, pounding his drums non-stop throughout the 2h35 show!
Having seen Avantasia on several occasions, I’m delighted to see that the setlist includes such little-played tracks as ‘Devil In The Belfry’, sung by Herbie Langhans (Firewind) at the top of his game, and ‘Promised Land’, which he’ll be sharing with Eric Martin (Mr. Big) later in the evening. The camaraderie on stage is obvious and a pleasure to watch. The crowd sang along to every track, especially classics like ‘Dying For An Angel’, which we were all delighted to hear again this evening. Among the newcomers to the project was Kenny Leckremo (H.E.A.T), who also gave a stellar performance on the excellent ‘Against The Wind’. As well as Here Be Dragons, the band have decided to showcase their 2008 album The Scarecrow this evening, playing no less than six tracks including the excellent ‘The Toy Master’, for which Tobias will be given a magnificent throne on stage.
The long tracks from the discography are also included, with the powerful and electric ‘Let The Storm Descend Upon You’ sung by Tobias, Herbie and Kenny, ‘Here Be Dragons’ sung as on the album by Tobias and Tommy, ‘The Wicked Symphony’ sung by Tommy, Kenny and Tobias, and finally ‘The Scarecrow’ sung by Herbie joined later by Tobias. These are four tracks, each lasting ten minutes or more, which show off the full power of Avantasia, the vocalists and the musicians. In fact, on several occasions Tobias will not hesitate to let his friends take centre stage without him, a sign of the total confidence he has in his fellow vocalists.
Emotions ran high as Chiara Tricarico (Moonlight Haze) took centre stage for the legendary ‘Farewell’, always an unforgettable moment in the band’s concerts. As the show draws to a close, it’s ‘Death Is Just A Feeling’ that brings a brilliant set to a close. But Tobias was soon back on stage with his piano for the very melodic ‘Lucifer’, before getting back into the swing of things with the increasingly energetic ‘Lost In Space’. Then, to end on a high, the whole band gradually returned to the stage for the medley ‘Sign Of The Cross/The Seven Angels’, which sent shivers down the spine of the audience, who sang along to the lyrics one last time.
As ever, Tobias Sammet and Avantasia put on a concert of the highest quality, proving that heavy power metal still has a very bright future ahead of it. All the vocalists present were in top form and brought to life in the most beautiful of ways the songs that have been thrilling us for all these years. A concert worthy of the project. It would be no surprise to see Avantasia back in Belgium soon, in a much bigger venue, given the warm welcome they received on this March evening.
