Une tornade grecque s’est abattue sur The Black Lab le 24 mars dernier! Nous ne sommes que lundi mais la salle a affiché presque complet pour cette soirée exceptionnelle, regroupant trois groupes grecs du label Ouga Bouga. Les talentueux 1000mods sont de retour, et sont cette fois accompagnés de Frenzee et This is Nowhere.

Il est encore tôt mais de nombreux spectateurs ont fait l’effort d’arriver à l’heure pour assister à la prestation de This is Nowhere, ajoutés tardivement sur l’affiche. Un drapeau Palestinien flotte sur scène, et restera toute la soirée. Dès l’entrée en scène de This is Nowhere, on ressent une grosse énergie, notamment dans la rythmique du groupe. Le batteur déchainé nous fait une proposition parfois proche du punk. Les riffs sont eux plus graves et planants. Il est difficile de mettre les compositions dans une case, entre stoner, punk, rock. La guitare peut parfois sonner mélodique. Le côté lourd du stoner est bien présent. Le contraste entre le rythme effréné et ce côté profond offre un son assez unique. Les deux voix qui se complètent permettent un relief très appréciable. Les titres longs sont composés de plusieurs mouvements. Parfois la batterie se calme pour laisser passer la guitare et/ou la basse au premier plan. Et quand on pense avoir saisi ce qui se trame sur scène, la formation vient nous surprendre avec un passage instrumental aux influences blues, dans une ambiance presque bœuf musical. Le set démarre fort, notamment sur son tempo et son rythme, pour ralentir progressivement vers des titres plus lourds, plus instrumentaux. Cela donne l’impression de s’ancrer progressivement dans le sol. L’avant dernier titre est particulièrement stoner, que ce soit dans son tempo, son rythme, ses riffs ou dans la voix. On flirte même parfois avec le stoner psyché. Le dernier titre est un parfait exemple de contraste grandiose entre une basse grasse et lourde et un rythme effréné. Le guitariste finit au sol, sur son pedalboard, nous montrant ses plus beaux effets, qui nous emmènent dans le champ du psyché, avant de finir en apothéose déchaînée.  This is Nowhere est la découverte parfaite que l’on pouvait attendre de cette soirée. Ils font un lien parfait entre les deux groupes suivants de la soirée.

La suite nous est offerte par Frenzee>. On avait découvert le groupe grâce à leur featuring sur un titre deCheat Death, dernier album de 1000mods. On s’attendait donc à un set énergique et plus punk. Mais pas à ce point! On se fait complètement écraser par ce rouleau compresseur! Tandis qu’on retrouve un côté Airbournedans les riffs, Apollonia nous assène un chant punk qui nous décoiffe instantanément! La rythmique endiablée ne faiblit jamais. Frenzee est un trio mais fait du bruit pour 12. Ça ne s’arrête pas, toujours à 100%. La diction d’Appollonia est ultra rapide et se transforme parfois en rap, scandé, pour un aspect encore plus agressif. Sa voix peut aussi parfois être un peu plus grave et tout aussi maîtrisée. On sent une forme de revendication dans leur musique. Celles-ci sortent également par le corps, dans leur gestuelle très tonique. Ils viennent accrocher le public avec leurs compositions hyper énergiques. Quand on nous annonce que nous avons uniquement fait le 1er round, on se demande comment le groupe va faire plus. Et bien c’est simple : Apolloniasort le micro fil et vient quasiment au contact du public, dans un mood très punk hardcore. L’ambiance est bien trop tentante pour les quelques esprits punks présents et un pogo éclate, permettant à chacun d’exulter face à cette énergie qui nous assaille. Même Apollonia se lance depuis la scène et nous offre un slam déchaîné. Le groupe arrive à obtenir un silence total dans la salle, contrastant avec la tonitruance de leur musique. “Hyperactive”, avant dernier titre du set, colle parfaitement à la représentation du groupe. Frenzeequitte la scène après 45 minutes de déchaînement total durant lesquelles on s’est fait tabasser avec plaisir. Si de nombreux spectateurs, dont je fais partie, ont adoré la prestation punk, on sent tout de même qu’on en a perdu certains, venus davantage pour le côté stoner de la soirée.

Le public est massé dans la salle qui semble pleine à craquer. Les grecs de 1000mods étaient déjà venus ici même fin 2022 et avaient fait un sold out très rapide. On avait pu les revoir entre-temps au Rock in Bourlon 2024, mais on ne peut cacher notre joie de les retrouver ici. Après une entrée en scène sur “War Pigs” de Black Sabbath, le groupe démarre son set avec “Overthrown”. C’est également le premier titre de leur dernier album Cheat Death, sorti en novembre dernier. Ce titre long nous permet de profiter du son massif, à la fois lourd et équilibré du groupe. Ils enchaînent directement avec “Electric Carve”, qui provoque déjà quelques remous dans la fosse. 1000mods nous fait ici la démonstration de son heavy-stoner bien énergique, dont ils ont le secret. Des samples aux aspects électroniques et évoquant une soucoupe volante font office de transition entre les titres. Le public exulte aux premières notes reconnaissables de “Road to Burn”. Les titres longs comportent plusieurs mouvements, modulant l’ambiance à leur guise. Un petit problème technique apparaît mais est très vite résolu afin que la fête soit totale. Les slameurs sont de plus en plus nombreux, naviguant facilement sur la masse de spectateurs. “Cheat Death” n’est pas là pour calmer les ardeurs du public avec son rythme rapide,son son massif mais aussi quelques riffs plus mélodiques. Il règne une chaleur humaine imposante dans la salle. “Götzen Hammer” est un titre particulièrement puissant sur lequel Apollonia de Frenzee vient faire une apparition, tout comme sur l’album. 1000mods joue avec les rythmes et les transitions au sein même des morceaux. “The One Who Keeps Down” est une masterpiece qui se révèle encore plus en live. La setlist est parfaite. 1000mods contrôle totalement l’énergie de la salle. On transpire, on danse, on entre en introspection, on exulte… bref on vit totalement ce concert, passant par toutes les phases que 1000modsveut nous communiquer. Les grecs nous offre un set long qui nous permet de profiter de nombreux titres, pourtant souvent longs. Les bonnes choses ont une fin et il est temps d’acclamer une dernière fois le groupe…. Avant la prochaine fois!

Nous étions vraiment heureux de retrouver 1000mods au Black Lab dont le son permet de profiter totalement des riches compositions. La soirée a été sublimée par les deux autres groupes grecs de la soirée, nous prouvant que cette scène a un potentiel incroyable. On espère avoir convaincu This is Nowhere et Frenzee de revenir dans nos contrées!

A Greek tornado hit The Black Lab on March 24th! It’s only Monday, but the venue was almost sold out for this exceptional evening, featuring three Greek bands from the Ouga Bouga label. The talented 1000mods are back, this time accompanied by Frenzee and This is Nowhere.

It’s still early but many fans have made the effort to get there on time to see This is Nowhere, a late addition to the bill. A Palestinian flag was waving on stage, and would remain so throughout the evening. As soon as This is Nowhere took to the stage, the energy was palpable, particularly in the band’s rhythm section. The unleashed drummer delivers a punk-like performance at times. The riffs, on the other hand, are more serious and soaring. It’s hard to pin down the band’s compositions into a single category, somewhere between stoner, punk and rock. The guitar can sometimes sound melodic. The heavy side of stoner is very much present. The contrast between the frantic rhythm and the depth of the sound is quite unique. The two voices complement each other, creating a highly appreciable relief. The long tracks are made up of several movements. Sometimes the drums calm down to let the guitar and/or bass take centre stage. And just when you think you’ve got the hang of what’s going on on stage, the band surprise us with a blues-influenced instrumental passage, in an almost musical jam session atmosphere. The set gets off to a strong start, particularly in terms of tempo and rhythm, before gradually slowing down to heavier, more instrumental tracks. It gives the impression of being gradually anchored in the ground. The penultimate track is particularly stoner, whether in its tempo, rhythm, riffs or vocals. At times it even flirts with psychedelic stoner. The last track is a perfect example of the grandiose contrast between a fat, heavy bass and a frantic rhythm. The guitarist ends up on the floor, on his pedalboard, showing us his most beautiful effects, which take us into the realm of psychedelia, before ending in a raging apotheosis. This is Nowhere is the perfect discovery for this evening. They make a perfect link between the next two bands of the evening.

Next up is Frenzee. We discovered the band thanks to their featuring on a track on Cheat Death, 1000mods‘ latest album. So we were expecting an energetic, punkier set. But not to this extent! We were completely crushed by this steamroller! While the riffs have a touch of Airbourne about them, Apollonia‘s punk vocals are an instant hair-raiser! The frenzied rhythm never falters. Frenzee are a trio, but they make noise for 12. It never stops, always 100%. Appollonia‘s diction is ultra-fast and sometimes turns into a chanted rap, for an even more aggressive edge. Her voice can also be a little deeper, but just as controlled. You can feel a kind of protest in their music. These demands also come out through the body, in their high-energy movements. They hook the audience with their high-energy compositions. When we’re told we’ve only done round 1, we wonder how the band are going to do more. Well, it’s quite simple: Apollonia pulls out the microphone and practically comes into contact with the audience, in a very hardcore punk mood. The atmosphere is far too tempting for the few punk minds present and a pogo erupts, allowing everyone to exult in the energy that assails us. Even Apollonia launches out from the stage with a wild slam. The band manage to achieve total silence in the room, contrasting with the thunder of their music. ‘Hyperactive’, the penultimate track of the set, fits in perfectly with the band’s performance. Frenzee leave the stage after 45 minutes of total rampage, during which we’ve been beaten up with pleasure. While many in the audience, including myself, loved the punk performance, you could sense that some had been lost, having come more for the stoner side of the evening.

The crowd is packed into the venue, which seems to be full to bursting. The Greeks from 1000mods had already been here at the end of 2022 and sold out very quickly. We saw them again at Rock in Bourlon 2024, but we can’t hide our delight at seeing them here again. After taking to the stage to Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’, the band kick off their set with ‘Overthrown’. This is also the first track on their latest album, Cheat Death, released last November. This long track lets us enjoy the band’s massive sound, both heavy and balanced. They follow directly with ‘Electric Carve’, which is already causing a stir in the pit. 1000mods demonstrate their secret high-energy heavy-stoner sound. Electronic samples reminiscent of a flying saucer provide the transition between tracks. The crowd goes wild at the first recognisable notes of ‘Road to Burn’. The long tracks feature several movements, modulating the atmosphere as they please. A small technical problem appeared but was quickly resolved to ensure the party was complete. The slammers are increasingly numerous, easily navigating the mass of spectators. ‘Cheat Death’ does nothing to dampen the spirits of the crowd, with its fast pace, massive sound and a few more melodic riffs. There’s an imposing human warmth in the room. ‘Götzen Hammer’ is a particularly powerful track on which Apollonia from Frenzee makes a guest appearance, as she does on the album. 1000mods plays with the rhythms and transitions within the tracks themselves. ‘The One Who Keeps Down’ is a masterpiece that reveals itself even more live. The setlist is perfect. 1000mods are in total control of the energy in the room. You sweat, you dance, you go into introspection, you exult… in short, you totally live this concert, going through all the phases that 1000mods want to communicate to us. The Greeks put on a long set, allowing us to enjoy many of their often lengthy tracks. All good things must come to an end, and it’s time to cheer the band one last time…. Until next time!
