Après avoir enflammé le Grand Mix en novembre 2023, les célèbres marionnettes de Puppetmastaz étaient de retour dans la région ce 26 avril dernier. Direction Le métaphone de Oignies donc pour aller profiter du hip hop à l’ancienne des allemands. Ce sont les locaux de Feini-X Crew qui ont eu la mission d’ouvrir la soirée.

Profitant des premiers rayons d’un soleil quasi estival, la soirée débute sur la terrasse du Métaphone, désormais ouverte une partie de la semaine et du week-end grâce au 9-9 bar, tenu par la brasserie locale de la Drache. Nous rejoignons ensuite la salle. Le public arrive très lentement, profitant de l’extérieur jusqu’au dernier moment. C’est donc avec un peu de retard et devant des rangs clairsemés que Feini-X Crew entre en scène. Un DJ nous accueille avant l’entrée progressive des deux rappeurs. Originaires de Maubeuge, le trio assène un rap à deux voix aux tessitures différentes. Entre soul, funk et voix rap à la Gims, les textes sont légers et chauffent doucement le public. Les paroles se veulent rassembleuses. Le groupe n’était pas venu au Métaphone depuis 10 ans. “Chevalier Noir”, dernier titre de la setlist, se veut davantage militant, contre le pouvoir, le fascisme et les faux semblants des politiques, et pour la reconnaissance des personnes racisées de ce pays qui oeuvrent dans l’ombre. Feini-X Crew a rempli sa mission de première partie comme il le fallait. Il sera possible de les revoir aux Agités du Mélange ou au Poche de Béthune en première partie de Davodka.
La salle est clairement plus remplie avant l’arrivée des Puppetmastaz.Le paravent permettant de cacher les artistes au profit de leurs marionnettes. Le concert / spectacle s’ouvre avec le premier chapitre : The Zoo. Le public est chaud avant même les premières notes. Et lorsque résonnent “Welcome to the Zoo” ou encore “The Juice” chacun se met à danser. Les marionnettes font mouche, et le public est totalement inter générationnel. Les animaux s’échappent ensuite du zoo par les égouts. Le rap se fait alors plus grave et profond, représentant à merveille le souterrain. Prônant la liberté, l’anthropomorphisme fonctionne à la perfection. On se prend d’affection pour le lapin mafieux, la tortue, le phacochère, le chien… Leurs aventures nous amènent au chapitre The Jungle durant lequel nos protagonistes doivent échapper à “The Flic”. Les artistes nous offrent régulièrement des intermèdes en franglais. Puis le chapitre Gods s’ouvre, et les chanteurs passent devant le paravent. Vêtus de costumes fluo entre pride et tektonik, ils font le show face à un public survolté. Un rap festif aux basses lourdes emporte la salle. Les titres de cette partie sont un peu différents dans leur énergie, soulignant parfaitement ce moment différent. L’ensemble est chorégraphié sans être trop théâtralisé. On ressent une proximité avec les artistes. L’ambiance dans la salle est incroyable. On a beau écumer les concerts, on a rarement vu aussi festif et bon enfant. Puis les animaux reviennent, dans un monde forestier dévasté et brûlé suite au passage des humains. Mère Nature est appelée à la rescousse sur “Visions”. D’autres personnages viennent rythmer le show, comme un guitariste masqué, un rockeur déjanté… Une marionnette rasta vient faire sa star sous autotune, passant sa main dans ses plumes. La tortue vient faire DJ sur le paravent. On découvre en live “Piece of Cake” dernier single du groupe, sorti il y a peu. La salle exulte lorsque “Midi Mighty Moe” arrive avec le petit personnage venu d’une autre planète qui va avec. “Do The Swamp” et “Pet Sound” retournent la salle qui chantent sur ces deux titres phares de la riche discographie du groupe. Le lapin nous offre ensuite un discours philosophique et une petite séance de relaxation. Puis “Puppetmad” voit tous les personnages réunis sur scène pour une danse de folie. C’est ensuite à Mr Panda, manager du groupe, de s’exprimer (en français!), afin d’encourager la salle à faire des bruits d’animaux pour rappeler la troupe. Ils viennent alors remettre le feu entre rap et raggamuffin, avant un dernier titre chill pour se quitter en douceur.
Une fois de plus, Puppetmastaz a créé une ambiance incroyable. Leurs shows sont toujours une réelle fête. Leur hip hop à l’ancienne fait toujours un bien fou. Sur fond de marionnettes et de rigolade, le groupe délivre des messages forts et engagés sur l’écologie, le pouvoir, la liberté.

After setting the Grand Mix alight in November 2023, the famous Puppetmastaz puppets were back in the region on April 26th. They headed for Le métaphone in Oignies to enjoy some old-fashioned German hip hop. Feini-X Crew opened the evening.

Enjoying the first rays of an almost summery sunshine, the evening begins on the Métaphone terrace, now open part of the week and weekend thanks to the 9-9 bar, run by local brasserie de la Drache. We then make our way to the auditorium. The audience arrives very slowly, enjoying the outdoors until the very last moment. So, a little late and in front of a sparse crowd, Feini-X Crew take to the stage. A DJ greets us before the progressive entrance of the two rappers. Hailing from Maubeuge, the trio deliver a rap with two voices of different tessituras. Between soul, funk and Gims-style rap vocals, the lyrics are light and gently warm up the audience. The lyrics are intended to bring people together. The group hadn’t been to Le Métaphone in 10 years. “Chevalier Noir”, the last track on the setlist, is more militant, against power, fascism and the false pretenses of politicians, and for recognition of the racialized people of this country who work in the shadows. Feini-X Crew fulfilled their mission as opening act as they should have. You can catch them again at Les Agités du Mélange or Le Poche de Béthune, opening for Davodka.
The room is clearly fuller before the arrival of the Puppetmastaz. The screen hides the performers in favor of their puppets. The concert/show opens with the first chapter: The Zoo. The audience is hot even before the first notes. And when “Welcome to the Zoo” and “The Juice” sound, everyone starts dancing. The puppets are a hit, and the audience is totally cross-generational. The animals then escape from the zoo through the sewers. The rap becomes deeper and more profound, perfectly representing the underground. The anthropomorphism of the song, which advocates freedom, works to perfection. We fall in love with the mafia rabbit, the turtle, the warthog, the dog… Their adventures lead us to The Jungle chapter, during which our protagonists must escape “The Flic”. The artists regularly offer interludes in Franglais. Then the Gods chapter opens, and the singers pass in front of the screen. Dressed in fluorescent costumes somewhere between pride and tektonik, they put on a show for an overexcited audience. Festive, bass-heavy rap takes the room by storm. The tracks in this section are a little different in energy, perfectly underlining this different moment.
The whole thing is choreographed without being overly theatrical. You feel close to the artists. The atmosphere in the hall is incredible. As many concerts as we’ve been to, we’ve rarely seen such a festive, good-natured atmosphere. Then the animals return, in a forest world devastated and burned by the passage of humans. Mother Nature is called to the rescue on “Visions”. Other characters, such as a masked guitarist, a crazy rocker… A Rasta puppet makes his star under autotune, running his hand through his feathers. The turtle DJs on the screen. The band’s latest single, “Piece of Cake”, is released live. The room erupts in cheers when “Midi Mighty Moe” arrives with its accompanying little character from another planet. “Do The Swamp” and ‘Pet Sound’ get the crowd singing along to these two highlights from the band’s rich discography. The rabbit then offers us a philosophical discourse and a little relaxation session. Then “Puppetmad” sees all the characters reunited on stage for a wild dance. The band’s manager, Mr Panda, then takes to the stage (in French!), encouraging the audience to make animal noises as a reminder of the band. They then set the stage alight with a mix of rap and raggamuffin, before a final chill track for a gentle farewell.
Once again, Puppetmastaz has created an incredible atmosphere. Their shows are always a real party. Their old-fashioned hip-hop always feels great. Against a backdrop of puppetry and laughter, the group delivers strong, committed messages on ecology, power and freedom.
