Pour finir ce long week-end du 1er mai, c’est une date deathcore qui nous attendait au Black Lab de Wasquehal avec pas moins que 4 groupes pour venir puiser en vous chaque bride d’énergie. Au programme, les français de Ten56, Dali et Solitaris ainsi que les gallois de Dream State pour une belle date qui a fait venir pas mal de belges dans la salle.

La soirée commence donc avec les parisiens de Solitaris, comme toujours caché derrière leurs bandeaux noirs. Il est encore tôt, et les nombreuses fenêtres et puits de lumières du black lab les font jouer quasiment en plein jour, ce qui casse légèrement l’ambiance sombre que le groupe essaye d’instaurer à chacun de leur concert. Qu’importe, le groupe va tout donner ce soir. Nous en sommes à notre cinquième performance de Solitaris en moins de 2 ans de notre côté, et leur set est toujours roder de la même façon. Des samples pour une atmosphère inquiétante, énormément de réverbération dans la voix, une rythmique assez hardcore, et enfin un son qui fait mouche. Notons tout de même que le groupe a sorti leur nouvel album, Nahar, il y a deux semaines à peine, apportant un petit vent de fraicheur dans leur set. Le public s’élancera dans un pogo au bout d’à peine 2 morceaux, signe que la sauce prends bien avec le public lillois. Solitaris nous font une nouvelle fois un sans faute, en restant toujours assez sobre, nous donnant envie d’enfin les voir en tête d’affiche à Lille. En effet, leur passage dans la région sont souvent en ouverture d’autres groupes comme ce soir ou avec Rise Of The Northstar très récemment à Bruay La Buissière, et leur dernier passage en tête d’affiche à Lille date de 2020 au Midland. En bref, ils sont très bons en live, on adhére à leur univers, et le public aussi.
The Dali Thundering Concept, tout récemment rebaptisé « Dali« , n’ont pas mis les pieds dans le nord depuis bien longtemps. Quel plaisir d’enfin les avoir à la maison, après leur album All Mighty Men véritable pépite qui prône fièrement dans notre discothèque, suivi de quasiment deux ans de silence. Ils l’annoncent très vite, on est ici pour bouger : « Tu danses, tu twerkes, tu zoukes » ! Dali sont comme à leurs habitudes d’une grande technicité, et leur djent est absolument grandiose. Il n’y a rien à dire, côté musicien, c’est un pur sans faute. Beaucoup de monde semble les découvrir ce soir dans la salle, mais les grosses parties deathcore viennent faire tourner le public avec vivacité, pendant que Sylvain Connier nous parle d’écologie et de réchauffement climatique, thème principal de leurs deux dernières sorties. Ce soir, il nous ont également présenté un tout nouveau morceau « Teargas », beaucoup plus agressif, dépeignant le profil psychologique d’activistes qui suffoquent. De quoi nous donner hâte de découvrir leur prochain album. Le set des parisiens filent à une vitesse folle, qu’on redemanderait bien un peu de rab, mais il y a encore deux groupes à faire jouer. En conclusion, Dali sont un coup de cœur depuis des années déjà, et leur nouveau morceau est totalement à la hauteur de nos attentes. Ils n’ont rien perdu en live, bien au contraire. Quel plaisir.
Pour le seul groupe étranger de la soirée, c’est Dream State qui prennent la suite des hostilités. Signé chez UNFD, les écossais proposent un mix entre métalcore et post-hardcore hyper énergique. C’est simple Jessie Powell, vocaliste du groupe depuis 2022, court partout et sautille sur chaque titre, quand elle ne distribue pas des œufs frais au public (oui oui). Les circles pits et pogo seront quasiment incessants pendant toute la prestation du groupe, et il faut dire que le groupe encourage le public avec ferveur. Dream State sont en pleine démonstration ce soir, pour faire adhérer le public français, parfois même assez théâtral et viennent piocher des morceaux dans l’ensemble de leur discographie, de quoi donner une belle présentation de leur musique. On retrouve dans la musique de Dream State un beau métalcore efficace, qui devient de plus en plus sombre à chaque cris de la chanteuse, toujours aussi impressionnant. On aura même le droit à un pigscream assez étonnant, avant d’inviter les enfants à monter sur scène. La bonne ambiance demeure sur tout ce set, et c’est au milieu du pit que Jessie finira le concert, pour faire danser toute la salle. Une prestation hyper réussie qui ne manquera pas de les faire revenir dans la région sur leur prochaine tournée en tête d’affiche. En tout cas, on a hâte après ce moment libérateur à leurs côtés.
Le soleil s’est couché, et il est temps de retrouver Ten56, quasiment un an jour pour jour depuis leur passage à Oignies pour le Hellfest Warm-up. Cette fois ci, le groupe a installé son décor sur scène et le public est chaud bouillant. Le set commence tout naturellement par « Good Morning », où les sonorités industrielles sont fortement marqués, où chaque musicien a un sourire gravé au visage. Aaron Matts, au chant, a les yeux fixés vers le balcon sur quasiment tout ce premier morceau, où sa compagne le regarde avec attention. Ce soir, il parlera en français ! Fini le temps de Betraying The Martyrs où Victor faisait tout le bla bla, Aaron a des choses sur le cœur à raconter, et ça commence avec Diazepam, l’un des tout premiers morceaux du groupe. C’est une vraie fourmilière qui s’agite de partout dans la salle, en même temps, Aaron nous a dit « Si vous avez des jambes, il faut les utiliser ». Le public se lance à cœur joie dans les pogos, et les slams seront quasiment incessants de toute la soirée. Comme chez Frank Carter, le public féminin aura droit à son moment avec un beau girl pit only sur ‘Trauma Doll », avant de se reposer quelques secondes en sortant les lampes torches des téléphones portables. Sur scène, les musiciens oscillent de partout, même si on sent que l’after du concert d’hier à Paris a du être sévère, et qu’on les a connu un peu plus énergique. Le public Lillois aura droit à « PTY FUCK », nouveau morceau qui mets tout le monde d’accord, nous attrapant en plein vol dans un deathcore industriel sorti des enfers. Jessie Powell de Dream State remontera sur scène pour le morceau « Ender » pour un beau duo de voix qui marche à merveille. L’heure du rappel, c’est aussi l’heure de prendre le temps de discuter. Aaron nous parlera de drogue, comme il l’a fait chez RSTLSS il y a quelques jours, comme un message de prévention, ou de soutien, ce qui va même lui tirer quelques larmes, avant d’interprêter « IO », nouveau titre qui tends vers l’emo rap, aux influences Post Malone très marqué, mais à la guitare très prog. Le concert se terminera donc sur « Boy » avec un wall of death allant jusqu’à la table son, et une bouteille de champagne qui éclabousse tout le premier rang pour finir en beauté cette tournée française.
Cette soirée fût une réelle piqure d’énergie pour le public Lillois. Les quatres groupes de la soirée se complétaient à la perfection, pour une revisite du deathcore hyper efficace. Ten56 est un nom immanquable de la scène française et on est très heureux de voir un black lab aussi rempli pour ce type d’affiche.

To round off the long weekend of May 1st, a deathcore date awaited us at Wasquehal’s Black Lab, with no less than 4 bands on hand to tap into your every ounce of energy. The line-up included French bands Ten56, Dali and Solitaris, as well as Welsh outfit Dream State, for a great date that brought quite a few Belgians into the venue.

The evening begins with Parisian band Solitaris, as always hidden behind their black headbands. It’s still early, and the black lab’s many windows and skylights mean that they’re playing almost in broad daylight, which slightly detracts from the dark atmosphere the band tries to create at each of their concerts. No matter, the band will give it their all tonight. This is our fifth Solitaris performance in less than 2 years, and their set is always the same. Samples for an eerie atmosphere, lots of reverb in the vocals, a fairly hardcore rhythm section, and a sound that really hits the spot. It’s worth noting that the band released their new album, Nahar, just two weeks ago, bringing a breath of fresh air to their set. The audience launched into a pogo after barely 2 songs, a sign that the sauce is catching on with the Lille crowd. Once again, Solitaris deliver a flawless performance, always remaining fairly sober, making us want to finally see them headline in Lille. Indeed, their appearances in the region are often in support of other bands, like tonight or with Rise Of The Northstar very recently in Bruay La Buissière, and their last headlining appearance in Lille dates back to 2020 at Midland. In short, they’re very good live, and we’re in their universe, and so is the audience.
The Dali Thundering Concept, recently renamed “Dali”, haven’t set foot up north for a long time. What a pleasure it is to finally have them home, after their album All Mighty Men, a veritable nugget that proudly stands in our discotheque, followed by almost two years of silence. They’re quick to point out that we’re here to move: “You dance, you twerk, you zouk! Dali are, as usual, highly technical, and their djent is absolutely grandiose. There’s nothing to say, as far as the musicians are concerned, it’s a pure faultless performance. A lot of people seem to be discovering them tonight in the hall, but the big deathcore parts get the audience going with vivacity, while Sylvain Connier talks to us about ecology and global warming, the main theme of their last two releases. Tonight, they also presented us with a brand-new, much more aggressive track, “Teargas”, depicting the psychological profile of suffocating activists. All the more reason to look forward to their next album. The Parisians’ set goes by so fast that we’d like to see a bit more, but there are still two more bands to play. In conclusion, Dali have been a favorite of ours for years now, and their new track totally lives up to our expectations. They’ve lost nothing live, quite the opposite in fact. What a pleasure.
For the only foreign band of the evening, it’s Dream State who take over the hostilities. Signed to UNFD, the Scots offer a hyper-energetic mix of metalcore and post-hardcore. Jessie Powell, the band’s vocalist since 2022, runs around and hops on every track, when she’s not handing out fresh eggs to the audience (yes, yes). Circles pits and pogo’s are virtually incessant throughout the band’s set, and it has to be said that they encourage the audience with fervor. Dream State are in full demonstration this evening, getting the French audience to join in, sometimes quite theatrically, and picking tracks from their entire discography, giving a fine presentation of their music. Dream State’s music is a beautiful, effective metalcore, which becomes darker and darker with each scream from the singer, as impressive as ever. There’s even an amazing pigscream, before they invite the kids on stage. The good mood remained throughout the set, and Jessie ended the concert in the middle of the pit, getting the whole room up and dancing. A highly successful performance that’s sure to bring them back to the region on their next headlining tour. In any case, we can’t wait after this liberating moment with them.
The sun has set, and it’s time to get back to Ten56, almost a year to the day since their Hellfest Warm-up appearance in Oignies. This time, the band has set up their stage set, and the audience is boiling hot. The set naturally begins with “Good Morning”, where the industrial sounds are strongly marked, and each musician has a smile engraved on his face. Aaron Matts, on vocals, has his eyes fixed on the balcony for most of this first track, where his companion looks on intently. Tonight, he’ll be speaking in French! Gone are the days of Betraying The Martyrs, when Victor did all the blah, blah, blah. Aaron’s got some heart to tell, and it starts with Diazepam, one of the band’s very first tracks. It’s a real ant-hill in the room, and Aaron has told us, “If you’ve got legs, you’ve got to use them”. The crowd goes wild with pogos, and the slams are almost non-stop throughout the evening. As with Frank Carter, the female audience get their moment with a beautiful girl pit only on ‘Trauma Doll’, before taking a few seconds’ rest by taking out their cell phone flashlights. On stage, the musicians are swinging all over the place, even if the after-show of yesterday’s concert in Paris must have been severe, and we’ve known them to be a little more energetic. The audience in Lille is treated to “PTY FUCK”, a new track that gets everyone on the same wavelength, catching us in mid-air with industrial deathcore from the underworld. Dream State’s Jessie Powell returns to the stage for “Ender”, a beautiful vocal duet that works like a charm. The encore is also time for a chat. Aaron will talk to us about drugs, as he did at RSTLSS a few days ago, as a message of prevention, or support, which will even bring a few tears to his eyes, before performing “IO”, a new track tending towards emo rap, with strong Post Malone influences, but very prog guitar. The concert ended on “Boy”, with a wall of death that went all the way to the soundboard, and a bottle of champagne that splashed all over the front row to round off this French tour in style.
The evening was a real energy boost for the Lille crowd. The evening’s four bands complemented each other perfectly, delivering a highly effective deathcore revisit. Ten56 is an unmissable name on the French scene, and we’re delighted to see such a packed black lab for this type of bill.
