Les suédois de Katatonia ont depuis les années 90 construit une discographie où les évolutions stylistiques ont été constantes mais où les émotions fortes ressenties à l’écoute ont toujours été au coeur du projet. Le groupe nous propose de découvrir, deux ans après Sky Void Of Stars, son treizième album studio. Intitulé Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State, il est disponible depuis le 6 juin via Napalm Records. Que nous réservent les suédois pour cette nouvelle sortie au titre intrigant?

Le death doom de Katatonia a depuis longtemps laissé sa place à une musique toujours sombre mais bien plus progressive, et dès « Thrice » on retrouve encore une marque de cette constante envie de faire bouger les lignes, sans jamais perdre ce qui fait l’essence du groupe. La voix de Jonas Renkse émerveille dans « The Liquid Eye » avec cette puissance toujours contenu dans un chant qui colle des frissons en quelques instants. Les riffs de Nico Elgstrand et Sebastian Svalland, nouveaux venus dans la formation depuis le départ de Anders Nyström, collent parfaitement à ce que Katatonia proposent depuis quelques disques et viennent nous emporter avec ce coté assez prog qu’on ressent à plusieurs reprises tout au long du disque. Inclinaison qu’on ressent d’ailleurs sur des titres comme « Lillac » avec la section rythmique menée par Niklas Sandin à la basse et Daniel Moilanen à la batterie. Les morceaux s’enchaînent avec toujours cette envie de nous surprendre et de nous coller des frissons toujours plus intenses. « Departure Trails » confirme une fois de plus que le groupe veut nous en mettre plein la vue avec ce nouvel album. La puissance des paroles vient toucher au coeur et les parties instrumentales montrent à quel point l’alchimie entre les musiciens présents depuis de nombreuses années et les nouveaux venus est déjà évidente. « Warden » remet une couche de beauté éthérée avec ce riff de guitare qui sers parfaitement la voix mélancolique de Jonas. Ce dernier nous propose d’ailleurs des paroles en suédois sur « Efter Solden », morceau on ne peut plus touchant où les instruments se font minimalistes pour garder le plus possible le côté poétique du morceau. L’album se clôt sur « In The Event Of », titre où chaque membre de la formation suédoise donne son meilleur dans une composition qui trouvera aisément sa place en concert tant elle regorge de ce qui fait depuis quelques albums l’identité du groupe.
Katatonia nous proposent avec Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State un nouveau disque captivant qui regorge de titres qui viennent attraper nos âmes pour ne plus les lâcher. L’émotion fut forte dès la première écoute et chaque nouvelle écoute nous rappelle à quel point le groupe, malgré les récents changements de line-up, sait construire un son magistral. Alors oui les origines sonores sont loin, mais l’évolution a toujours été au coeur de ce groupe qu’on suit depuis de nombreuses années, et cet album vient parfaire une discographie toujours plus passionnante.

Since the 90s, Sweden’s Katatonia have built up a discography in which stylistic evolutions have been constant, but where the strong emotions felt when listening have always been at the heart of the project. Now, two years on from Sky Void Of Stars, the band are back with their thirteenth studio album. Entitled Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State, it has been available since 6 June via Napalm Records. What do the Swedes have in store for us on this intriguing new release?
Katatonia‘s death doom has long since given way to music that’s still dark but much more progressive, and on ‘Thrice’ there’s yet another sign of this constant desire to shake things up, without ever losing the essence of the band. Jonas Renkse‘s voice marvels in ‘The Liquid Eye’, with the power still contained in a vocal that sends shivers down your spine in a matter of moments. The riffs of Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland, newcomers to the band since the departure of Anders Nyström, fit in perfectly with what Katatonia have been offering for the last few albums and carry us away with the prog edge we feel on several occasions throughout the record. You can also feel this inclination on tracks like ‘Lillac’, with the rhythm section led by Niklas Sandin on bass and Daniel Moilanen on drums. The tracks follow on from one another with a constant desire to surprise and thrill. ‘Departure Trails’ confirms once again that the band want to blow us away with this new album. The power of the lyrics tugs at the heartstrings, and the instrumental parts show just how much chemistry already exists between the long-serving musicians and the newcomers. ‘Warden’ adds another layer of ethereal beauty with a guitar riff that perfectly serves Jonas‘s melancholy voice. Jonas also provides Swedish lyrics on ‘Efter Solden’, a touching track where the instruments are minimalist to keep the poetic side of the track as much as possible. The album closes with ‘In The Event Of’, a track in which each member of the Swedish band gives their all in a composition that will easily find its place in concert, so full is it of what has been the band’s identity for the last few albums.
With Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State, Katatonia offer us a captivating new album packed with tracks that grab our souls and never let go. The emotion was strong from the first listen, and each new listen reminds us just how much the band, despite recent line-up changes, know how to build a masterful sound. So, yes, the band’s sound origins are a long way off, but evolution has always been at the heart of this band we’ve been following for many years, and this album completes an ever more exciting discography.
