Révélation de ces dernières années, l’ovni Poppy atterrit au Splendid à Lille à l’occasion de sa tournée mondiale They’re All Around Us. Une vraie opportunité pour les fans du coin de découvrir sur scène une artiste aussi intrigante qu’inclassable. De leur côté, ce sont les Lillois de AĦNA qui auront l’honneur d’ouvrir le bal.

Avant même le début du concert à 20h, un vaste public jeune envahit la salle pour assister à la représentation de la désormais célèbre chanteuse américaine. Les spectateurs, composés en majorité de metalleux, semblent impatients d’entendre leurs morceaux préférés. Cependant, il faudra encore patienter : c’est le groupe de métal alternatif AĦNA (plusieurs fois chroniqué chez Sounding Shivers) qui a été dévoilé quelques heures auparavant comme première partie. Une très bonne surprise et une grande opportunité pour eux de faire connaître leur musique !
Une fois sur scène, le set démarre avec le très bon “Distant Melody”, suivi de “Burden”, deux titres issus de leur tout premier album Waves, sorti en 2024. Ce disque sera évidemment au cœur de leur performance ce soir. La chanteuse Oriane donne tout face à un public d’abord un peu réservé mais rapidement, les spectateurs se prennent au jeu et s’impliquent davantage au fil du show des Lillois. Énergique et manifestement ravi d’être là, le groupe entend bien chauffer la salle avant l’arrivée des Américains. Pari réussi ! Grâce à un vrai professionnalisme et à des mélodies efficaces, la foule suit le rythme, saute, et participe activement. Un wall of death aura même lieu sur le breakdown de “Fireflies” !
Avant de conclure leur prestation, Oriane prend le temps de remercier chaleureusement tous ceux qui ont rendu cette soirée possible et de souligner l’importance du soutien aux groupes locaux. On ne vous le dira jamais assez : soutenons les groupes de la scène locale!
Sous une chaleur étouffante, les fans patientent tranquillement avant l’arrivée de Poppy, chantant à tue-tête certains morceaux diffusés en fond sonore. À 21h, les musiciens cagoulés qui l’accompagnent montent sur scène, suivis de la chanteuse elle-même qui lance le set avec l’excellent “have you had enough” (Negative Spaces, 2024). Une très bonne entrée en matière pour un show qui s’annonce dantesque, à l’image de “BLOODMONEY” (I Disagree, 2020). Avec ses beats lourds et saturés, ce titre entraîne toute la salle dans un headbang frénétique.
Quelques morceaux, comme “Sit/Stay” ou “Anything Like Me”, ont un impact plus mesuré sur la foule. Cela ne gâche en rien le plaisir, car Poppy a encore bien des titres puissants à offrir. Le set, majoritairement centré sur Negative Spaces et I Disagree, est résolument orienté métal, avec de gros riffs et du chant crié. Pourtant, des morceaux aux sonorités plus pop ou en chant clair (comme “crystallized”) montrent qu’elle assume pleinement son mélange des genres. Un pari risqué, mais qui séduit manifestement un public métal fidèle et nombreux. Outre l’aspect musical très convaincant, Poppy, à l’instar de la chanteuse d’AĦNA, parcourt sans cesse la scène de long en large, invitant les spectateurs à se déhancher. Tandis que les musiciens eux, bien que discrets derrière leurs cagoules, font preuve d’un talent indéniable. Le solo du guitariste, tête levée et tout en décontraction lors de la présentation du groupe, en est une belle démonstration. Durant une heure, le public est en ébullition et montre tout l’amour qu’il porte à l’artiste. De son côté, Poppy reste très discrète verbalement, communiquant très peu avec l’auditoire… comme si elle prolongeait en concert son rôle d’androïde développé sur YouTube il y a quelques années ! Pour autant, cela n’a pas empêché une bonne communion entre elle et les spectateurs ! Enfin, pour clôturer ce spectacle intense : un circle pit sur “Concrete” et un dernier wall of death sur “new way out”. De quoi ravir les métalleux présents !
Ouvert par un set de AĦNA joyeux et très solide, le set de Poppy s’est révélé millimétré, peut-être un peu trop, mais a fait le bonheur des fans. Ne vous y trompez pas : entre morceaux très metal et passages plus pop, il y avait largement de quoi satisfaire tout le monde. On aurait aimé cependant un peu plus d’interactions verbales avec le public… chose que AĦNA a su faire haut la main. Bravo les Lillois !

One of the revelations of recent years, the UFO Poppy lands at the Splendid in Lille as part of her They’re All Around Us world tour. Even before the concert began at 8pm, a large young audience packed the venue to see the now famous American singer perform. Most of the audience were metalheads, eager to hear their favourite songs. However, they’ll have to wait a little longer: alternative metal band AĦNA (reviewed several times by Sounding Shivers) had been unveiled a few hours earlier as the opening act. A very pleasant surprise, and a great opportunity for them to get their music out there!
Once on stage, the set kicks off with the excellent “Distant Melody”, followed by “Burden”, two tracks from their very first album, Waves, released in 2024. This album will obviously be at the heart of their performance this evening. Singer Oriane gave her all in front of an audience that was initially a little reserved, but quickly got into the swing of things and got more involved as the Lille-based band went on. Energetic and clearly delighted to be there, the band set out to warm up the room before the arrival of the Americans. And they succeeded! Thanks to a real sense of professionalism and effective melodies, the crowd followed the rhythm, jumped up and down and took an active part. There’s even a wall of death on the breakdown of ‘Fireflies’!
Before concluding their performance, Oriane took the time to warmly thank everyone who had made the evening possible and to stress the importance of supporting local bands. We can’t say this enough: let’s support upcoming bands!
In the sweltering heat, the fans waited quietly for Poppy to arrive, singing along at the top of their voices to some of the songs playing in the background. At 9pm, the hooded musicians who accompany her take to the stage, followed by the singer herself, who kicks off the set with the excellent ‘have you had enough’ (Negative Spaces, 2024). A great start to what promises to be a Dantesque show, as evidenced by “BLOODMONEY” (I Disagree, 2020). With its heavy, saturated beats, this track sends the whole room into a frenzied headbang.
A few tracks, such as “Sit/Stay” and “Anything Like Me”, had a more measured impact on the crowd. This in no way spoils the fun, though, as Poppy still have plenty of powerful tracks to offer. The set, mainly centred on Negative Spaces and I Disagree, was resolutely metal-oriented, with big riffs and screamed vocals. However, tracks with a more pop sound or clear vocals (such as “crystallized”) show that she’s fully embracing her mix of genres. It’s a risky gamble, but one that has clearly won over a loyal and numerous metal audience. In addition to the highly convincing musical aspect, Poppy, like the singer of AĦNA, constantly roams the stage from side to side, inviting the audience to sway to their feet. The musicians, though discreet behind their balaclavas, are undeniably talented. The guitarist’s solo, with his head raised in a relaxed way as he introduces the band, is a fine demonstration of this. For an hour, the audience was in a frenzy, showing all the love they had for the artist. For her part, Poppy remained very discreet verbally, communicating very little with the audience… as if she were extending in concert her android role developed on YouTube a few years ago! But that didn’t stop her and the audience from bonding! Finally, to round off this intense show: a circle pit on ‘Concrete’ and a final wall of death on ‘New Way Out’. All in all, a real treat for the metalheads in attendance!
Opened by a joyful and very solid set from AĦNA, Poppy‘s set proved to be meticulous, perhaps a little too much so, but it delighted the fans. Make no mistake: between very metal tracks and more pop passages, there was more than enough to satisfy everyone. However, we would have liked a little more verbal interaction with the audience… something that AĦNA managed to do with flying colours. Well done to the band from Lille!
