La vie lilloise (et sa métropole) regorge de soirées plus qualitatives les unes que les autres. Parmi celles-ci il en existe des immanquables. C’était le cas le 11 juillet 2025 à The Black Lab, salle à la riche programmation. Les talentueux et uniques Birds in Row étaient venus asséner leur post hardcore aux nordistes, pour notre plus grande joie. Ils étaient accompagnés des belges de Villenoire, promettant également un style post-hardcore.

On croise de nombreuses têtes connues à notre arrivée, signe que tous les amateurs du genre se sont bel et bien donnés rendez-vous ce soir. Nous ne connaissons pas Villenoire mais on nous en a déjà dit le plus grand bien. On observe d’entrée de jeu un pédalier de basse impressionnant. La formation entre en scène et nous propose un post hardcore très mélodique pour commencer. Les sonorités lourdes viennent s’y mêler progressivement. Le groupe interprète la totalité de son album WHORN, paru en mai 2025. Celui-ci est joué dans l’ordre et nous montre ainsi sa construction, qui fonctionne totalement en live. En effet, le concert monte progressivement en intensité, commençant par les morceaux les plus doux pour faire émerger crescendo une sorte de violence, en passant par toute une palette d’émotions brutes. Ainsi “Belittle Notes” est très accessible, avec par moments des airs de Beartooth dans l’esprit. Plus on avance dans le set, plus on sent la complexité dans la composition des morceaux. C’est à la fois brut et profond, conférant pléthores de sensations, avec un son particulièrement travaillé. “New Memories” a été enregistrée en featuring avec Quentin Sauvé, bassiste de Birds in Row, et c’est tout naturellement qu’il rejoint la scène pour un une interprétation à deux voix, fidèle à l’album. “Endnote” prend vraiment aux tripes, dans une sorte de tornade dévastatrice. Le public est à fond dans le show. L’enchainement de l’album est uniquement coupé par “Ten”, titre inédit. Le rythme se fait plutôt déstructuré, sur un mode de titre déconstruit et complexe comme on aime. Le set continue à se faire de plus en plus lourd. On suit vraiment ce chemin du post hardcore mélodique au hardcore lourd et sévère. Et tandis que le batteur termine debout derrière sa batterie, le bassiste rejoint le pit. Le set se termine sur une salle surchauffée, et parfaitement prête à accueillir Birds in Row. On a découvert ce soir un groupe d’une qualité extrêmement précieuse. L’album risque d’ailleurs d’arriver dans nos tops de 2025!
Nous n’en sommes pas à notre coup d’essai avec Birds In Row. En effet, le groupe est déjà passé à plusieurs reprises derrière notre plume. Et chacun de leur live a été un réel moment gravé. Il arrive que nous ayons des attentes très élevées d’un concert et que celui-ci en semble parfois moins impressionnant à la sortie. On peut d’ores et déjà vous dire que ce n’est pas cas avec Birds in Row. D’entrée de jeu, le trio nous subjugue à nouveau. L’émotion pure et brute tel un diamant vient frapper nos cœurs. Le chant de Bart, aussi torturé que mélancolique et puissant, nous prend aux tripes comme peu peuvent le faire. Les compositions du groupe sont aussi sauvages que complexes. Musicalement, le trio en vaut dix. Les sonorités s’entremêlent, nous assaillant de toute part, dans une harmonie d’un équilibre rare. Les lumières suivent les ambiances, et on assiste à un spectacle qui nous absorbe totalement. Ainsi les sonorités transpirent parfois la rage dévastatrice avec les lights rouges, tandis que celles-ci se font plus douces et sobres dans les parties calmes et davantage tournées vers la mélancolie. Joris (batterie) assure derrière ses fûts. Il nous offre des interludes incroyables, avant que Bart ne se ne remette à cracher et hurler tous ses ressentis forts. La musique de Birds in Row transperce le cœur. Bien au-delà des considérations de style, elle bouleverse, secoue. Le groupe tourne depuis un moment déjà avec Gris Klein, dernier album sorti en 2022. Ils nous annoncent qu’il ne reste que 4 dates de cette longue série. On ressent un véritable sentiment de communauté au sein du Black Lab ce soir. Et la prise de parole du groupe dénonçant le génocide en cours, les violences policières, et encourageant les manifestations et les travailleurs du social et de l’éducation est reçue avec de nombreuses acclamations dans le public uni. La musique reprend ensuite toute sa place et résonne fort dans la salle. Les lights en noir et blanc amènent un côté très authentique et simple. On alterne entre passages instrumentaux et moments où la voix de Bart prend le dessus et nous subjugue par son émotion. Quentin (basse) assure les chœurs, avec un effet de reverb aux influences froides. Le concert passe à une vitesse folle et la fin nous semble d’une brutalité indescriptible. On sent d’ailleurs le public hébété par cette fin, comme si on avait tous été transportés dans une dimension parallèle et relâchés bien trop brutalement. Et alors que Birds in Row ne le fait jamais, ils reviennent sur scène pour nous interpréter “You, Me & The Violence”, chanson éponyme du 1er album. Un moment unique de partage qui prouve bien que le plaisir que nous avons eu à les voir était partagé par le groupe également.
Nous nous attendions à être happé par le set de Birds in Row qui a surpassé toutes nos attentes. Et en plus de ça, Villenoire nous a mis une claque inattendue. Une soirée d’une rare intensité émotionnelle, qui ne peut pas laisser de marbre.

Lille (and its metropolitan area) is bursting at the seams with top-quality events. And some are not to be missed. Such was the case on 11 July 2025 at The Black Lab, a venue with a rich programme. The talented and unique Birds in Row came to bring their post hardcore to the north of France, much to our delight. They were joined by Belgian band Villenoire, also promising a post-hardcore style.

As we arrived, we bumped into a lot of familiar faces, a sign that all the fans of the genre were well and truly there for the evening. We don’t know Villenoire but we’ve already heard great things about them. The bass pedalboard is impressive from the outset. The band take to the stage with a very melodic post-hardcore sound to start with. The heavy sounds are gradually mixed in. The band play their entire WHORN album, released in May 2025. The album is played in order, showing us its construction, which works perfectly live. The concert gradually builds in intensity, starting with the softer tracks and building to a crescendo of violence, through a whole range of raw emotions. Belittle Notes », for example, is very accessible, and at times has a Beartooth feel to it. The further into the set you get, the more complex the songwriting becomes. It’s both raw and deep, offering a plethora of sensations, with a particularly polished sound. ‘New Memories’ was recorded featuring Quentin Sauvé, bassist with Birds in Row, and it’s only natural that he should join us on stage for a two-part rendition, faithful to the album. ‘Endnote’ really gets under your skin, in a sort of devastating tornado. The audience is really into the show. The album’s sequence is interrupted only by ‘Ten’, a previously unreleased track. The rhythm is rather unstructured, in the deconstructed, complex way we love. The set continues to get heavier and heavier. We’re really following this path from melodic post-hardcore to heavy, harsh hardcore. And while the drummer finishes up standing behind his drum kit, the bassist joins the pit. The set ended with the venue overheated and ready to welcome Birds in Row. Tonight we discovered a band of extremely precious quality. In fact, the album is likely to be one of our top albums of 2025!
This is not our first time with Birds In Row. In fact, the band has already been behind our pen on several occasions. And each of their live performances has been a real highlight. Sometimes we have very high expectations of a concert, and it can sometimes seem less impressive when it’s over. We can already tell you that this is not the case with Birds in Row. From the outset, the trio once again captivate us. Pure, raw emotion like a diamond strikes our hearts. Bart‘s vocals, as tortured as they are melancholy and powerful, grab you by the guts like few others can. The band’s compositions are as wild as they are complex. Musically, the trio is worth ten. The sounds intermingle, assaulting us from all sides, in a harmony of rare balance. The lights follow the moods, and we’re treated to a show that totally absorbs us. At times, the sounds exude devastating rage with the red lights, while in the quieter, more melancholy parts they are softer and more restrained. Joris is great behind the drums. He gives us some incredible interludes, before Bart starts spitting and screaming all over again. Birds in Row’s music pierces the heart. Far beyond considerations of style, it shakes things up. The band have been touring for a while now with Gris Klein, their last album released in 2022. They announce that there are only 4 dates left in this long series. There’s a real sense of community in The Black Lab tonight. And the band’s speech denouncing the ongoing genocide and police violence, and encouraging the demonstrations and social and education workers, is received with loud cheers from the united audience. The music then resumed its full role, resonating loudly throughout the room. The black and white lighting gave the show a very authentic and simple feel. We alternate between instrumental passages and moments where Bart’s voice takes over and captivates us with its emotion. Quentin (bass) provides the backing vocals, with a cool reverb effect. The concert went by at breakneck speed and the end seemed indescribably brutal. It’s as if we’ve all been transported to a parallel dimension and released far too suddenly. And just when Birds in Row never do, they return to the stage to perform “You, Me & The Violence”, the eponymous song from their 1st album. A unique moment of sharing that proves that the pleasure we had in seeing them was shared by the band too.
We were expecting to be swept away by Birds in Row‘s set, which surpassed all our expectations. And on top of that, Villenoire gave us an unexpected slap in the face. An evening of rare emotional intensity, that can’t leave you unmoved.
