En ce soir pluvieux du 23 juillet, la Décathlon Aréna a accueilli les américains de Imagine Dragons, nom immanquable de la scène pop rock mondiale depuis de nombreuses années. Venus présenter leur album Loom sorti l’an dernier, les américains ont fait leur premier concert dans la métropole lilloise depuis 2015! Pour les accompagner sur cette date ils ont fait appel à l’artiste anglais Declan McKenna et ses musiciens.

Dans un stade plein à craquer les techniciens viennent débâcher les instruments de la première partie après une grosse averse passée au dessus du stade. C’est parti pour la découverte de l’univers de Declan McKenna. Guitare, claviers, batterie, basse et évidemment chant tout y est pour que la soirée débute de la plus belle des manières. Dès « Nothing Works » le musicien d’Enfield nous dévoile ses talents de chanteur et de guitariste. Dans un style indie rock, le chanteur et ses musiciens emportent le public, malgré un son ne rendant pas totalement hommage aux belles compositions de notre hôte de début de soirée. Les écrans géants en fond de scène affichent les paroles sur le premier titre avant de proposer des visuels venant s’apposer sur le retour caméra des musiciens. « Elevator Hum » ou encore « Mulholland’s Dinner and Wine » et sa référence au film du regretté David Lynch continue de nous envouter. La voix de Declan fait mouche avec nous et visiblement avec pas mal de personnes dans le stade, signe que sa venue avec Imagine Dragons sur cette tournée a déjà fait des émules. « Izzombard » et « Champagne » laissent aux musiciens l’occasion de nous montrer eux aussi tout leur talent. Ce set nous fait naviguer dans la discographie déjà fournie de l’artiste anglais et ça n’est pas pour nous déplaire. Le public applaudit largement, en particulier dans la fosse. Et c’est avec l’entraînant « British Bombs » que Declan McKenna termine son set en ayant tout à fait réussi son passage à Lille! De notre côté c’était une totale découverte et on a passé un très bon moment. On vous conseille vivement d’aller découvrir son travail et on espère avoir la chance de le revoir dans un cadre plus intimiste.
Après une pause dans les travées du stade il est temps de retrouver Imagine Dragons sur scène. Leur scène faite de nombreux écrans géants et d’une scène allant jusqu’au milieu de la fosse, s’allume puis le groupe débarque sur « Fire In These Hills » morceau tiré de l’album donnant son titre à la tournée. Les quatre musiciens venus du Nevada donnent tout d’entrée de jeu. Dan Reynolds n’hésite pas dès les premières secondes du concert à parcourir la scène en chantant à plein poumons au plus près des fans. Les confettis sont rapidement de sortie sur « Thunder » qui sera repris en chœur par le stade. La pluie a rendue la scène glissante et c’est donc un mouvement perpétuel de techniciens qui vient la rendre praticable entre chaque morceau. Wayne Sermon à la guitare et Ben McKee à la basse sont en grande forme et nous livrent de très belles prestations sur des titres comme « Take Me To The Beach », morceau où des ballons de plage géant seront lancés dans la fosse. L’échange entre Dan et les premiers rangs de la fosse est évident, même si on ressent parfois un manque de communication avec le reste de la foule. « I »m So Sorry » et « Whatever It Takes » sont également repris en chœur, et sur ce dernier titre Andrew Tolman, revenu dans la formation pour les tournées en 2023, nous montre une fois de plus à quel point il est un excellent batteur. Pour ce concert lillois, le set acoustique est abandonné au grand dam des fans et c’est « Bad Liar » qui prend directement la suite.
Les confettis et jets de CO2 sont de retour, puis le classique parmi les classiques « Radioactive » est lancé avec une guitare acoustique avant que les fans ne chantent en compagnie de Dan ce morceau mythique de leur discographie. En fin de morceau le chanteur rejoint une seconde batterie placée au dessus de celle d’Andrew pour une longue outro en duo qui montre que Dan est également un batteur de talent. Suivra un autre tube, « Demons » lancé par une intro au piano et accueillir par des ballons violet brandis par les fans un peu partout dans le stade. Ce morceau sur le combat contre la dépression et autres démons intérieurs frappe toujours juste et nous colle des frissons. Le concert file à une vitesse folle « Walking The Wire » nous le confirment avec une fois de plus peu de communication entre les titres, à part quelques remerciements et quelques petits discours quand il le faut. Sur « Sharks » des fans lancent un bonnet requin et des lunettes sur scène, que Dan n’hésitera pas à porter tout au long du titre. La communion entre les musiciens est totale, mais ce soir c’est vraiment l’interaction avec le public du stade qui nous manque. Le manque d’ambiance dans certaines parties de l’enceinte y étant surement pour quelque chose, le groupe continue d’enchaîner les titres. Cela posera très vite problème puisque les derniers titres de ce set sont joués avec encore un soleil bien présent dans le ciel, ce qui empêche de profiter des beaux jeux de lumières proposés par la formation américaine. « Eyes Closed » nous laisse profiter d’un autre show de percussions cette fois ci avec chaque musicien muni de tambours. Et nous voilà déjà presque à la fin du set avec les trois derniers titres. Après le très bon « In Your Corner » le groupe passe en mode flammes avec « Believer » qui vient clôturer le concert, avec une imagerie en intro qui ne dénoterait pas dans un concert de métal. Le groupe laisse exploser ce titre culte avant de quitter la scène sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements des fans présents ce soir.
Malgré une prestation de haute volée comme à leur habitude côté musique, ce concert de Imagine Dragons nous laisse un souvenir en demi-teinte. Evidemment la setlist a laissé place aux meilleurs titres du groupe avec une interprétation toujours au diapason de nos attentes, mais le manque d’entrain d’une partie du public, le côté expéditif du concert avec à peine 1h40 et le manque d’interaction nous laisse un peu mitigés. On aura quand même bien profité de cette soirée au stade et on a toujours plaisir à retrouver les américains sur scène!

On this rainy July evening, the Décathlon Arena welcomes American band Imagine Dragons, a household name on the global pop rock scene for many years. Here to promote their album Loom, released last year, the Americans are playing their first concert in Lille since 2015! They are joined on stage by English artist Declan McKenna and his musicians.

In a packed stadium, the technicians come out to uncover the instruments for the first half after a heavy downpour over the stadium. It’s time to discover the world of Declan McKenna. Guitar, keyboards, drums, bass and, of course, vocals: everything is in place for the evening to get off to the best possible start. From the very first song, ‘Nothing Works’, the musician from Enfield reveals his talents as a singer and guitarist. With their indie rock style, the singer and his musicians win over the audience, despite a sound that doesn’t quite do justice to the beautiful compositions of our early evening host. The giant screens at the back of the stage display the lyrics to the first song before showing visuals superimposed on the camera feed of the musicians. ‘Elevator Hum’ and ‘Mulholland’s Dinner and Wine’, with its reference to the late David Lynch’s film, continue to captivate us. Declan’s voice hits the mark with us and clearly with quite a few people in the stadium, a sign that his appearance with Imagine Dragons on this tour has already made an impression. ‘Izzombard’ and ‘Champagne’ give the musicians the opportunity to show off their talent too. This set takes us on a journey through the English artist’s already extensive discography, which is no bad thing. The audience applauds enthusiastically, especially in the pit. And it is with the catchy ‘British Bombs’ that Declan McKenna ends his set, having made a very successful appearance in Lille! For us, it was a complete discovery and we had a great time. We highly recommend that you check out his work and we hope to have the chance to see him again in a more intimate setting.
After a break in the stadium stands, it’s time to return to Imagine Dragons on stage. Their stage, made up of numerous giant screens and extending into the middle of the pit, lights up, and the band launches into ‘Fire In These Hills,’ a track from the album that gives the tour its title. The four musicians from Nevada give it their all right from the start. From the very first seconds of the concert, Dan Reynolds doesn’t hesitate to run across the stage, singing at the top of his lungs as close as possible to the fans. Confetti is quickly thrown during ‘Thunder,’ which is sung along to by the entire stadium. The rain has made the stage slippery, so technicians are constantly busy making it safe between each song. Wayne Sermon on guitar and Ben McKee on bass are in great form and deliver some fantastic performances on tracks such as ‘Take Me To The Beach’, during which giant beach balls are thrown into the pit. The interaction between Dan and the front rows of the pit is obvious, even if there is sometimes a lack of communication with the rest of the crowd. ‘I’m So Sorry’ and ‘Whatever It Takes’ are also sung along to, and on the latter track, Andrew Tolman, who has returned to the band for the 2023 tours, shows us once again what an excellent drummer he is. For this concert in Lille, the acoustic set is abandoned, much to the disappointment of the fans, and ‘Bad Liar’ follows straight on.
The confetti and CO2 jets are back, then the classic among classics, ‘Radioactive,’ kicks off with an acoustic guitar before the fans sing along with Dan to this legendary track from their discography. At the end of the song, the singer joins a second drum kit placed above Andrew’s for a long duet outro that shows that Dan is also a talented drummer. Another hit follows, ‘Demons’, launched by a piano intro and greeted by purple balloons waved by fans throughout the stadium. This song about the fight against depression and other inner demons still hits home and gives us chills. The concert flies by at breakneck speed, as confirmed by ‘Walking The Wire’, with once again little communication between songs, apart from a few words of thanks and a few short speeches when necessary. During ‘Sharks’, fans throw a shark hat and goggles onto the stage, which Dan doesn’t hesitate to wear throughout the song. The communion between the musicians is total, but tonight it’s really the interaction with the stadium audience that we’re missing. The lack of atmosphere in certain parts of the venue certainly played a part, but the band continued to play song after song. This quickly became a problem, as the last few songs of the set were played while the sun was still shining brightly in the sky, preventing the audience from enjoying the beautiful light show put on by the American band. ‘Eyes Closed’ treated us to another percussion show, this time with each musician equipped with drums. And now we’re already almost at the end of the set with the last three songs. After the excellent ‘In Your Corner’, the band goes into flame mode with ‘Believer’, which closes the concert, with intro imagery that wouldn’t be out of place at a metal concert. The band lets this cult song explode before leaving the stage to thunderous applause from the fans in attendance tonight.
Despite a high-quality performance, as usual on the musical side, this Imagine Dragons concert leaves us with mixed feelings. Of course, the setlist featured the band’s best songs, performed as we expected, but the lack of enthusiasm from part of the audience, the brevity of the concert (barely 1 hour and 40 minutes) and the lack of interaction left us feeling a little underwhelmed. We still enjoyed the evening at the stadium and it’s always a pleasure to see the Americans on stage!
