L’été n’avait pas encore touché à sa fin que The Black Lab nous avait concocté une superbe soirée au nom du Rock Psychedelic, Stoner et du Heavy Psych ce 16 août dernier, avec trois groupes de grande valeur, des perles du genre. J’ai nommé Temple Fang, Spirit Mother et King Buffalo. Sortez vos barbes épaisses, vos magnifiques tignasses, vos bandanas, et préparez-vous pour un voyage transcendantal que vous n’êtes pas prêt d’oublier de si tôt.

On commence la soirée dans le calme et la tranquillité avec un The Black Lab déjà bien rempli grâce à Temple Fang, un quatuor venu tout droit d’Amsterdam nous jouant un mix de Rock Psychédélique, de Rock Progressif et de Heavy Psych. Parfaite première partie pour une douce mise en bouche tant leurs toutes premières notes nous plongent directement dans un trip cosmique complètement planant. On a presque envie de fermer les yeux pour se laisser bercer dans les méandres de leurs âmes tant leur musique est une véritable invitation au voyage intérieur. Avec eux, pas de grosses distos noise qui tâchent et qui plombent, juste du Rock Psyché ultra planant dans sa plus pure tradition, nous rappelant souvent leurs grands frères des 60’s. Les aficionados du genre en sont ravis tant l’expérience musicale que nous offre Temple Fang reste littéralement gravée dans la roche à chacun des voyages psychiques qu’il nous offre. Aucunement besoin de puissance sonore et de solos à gogo pour entrer en transe, il y a juste à se laisser bercer par le calme et la volupté que nous distille leur son si particulier, jusqu’à ressentir littéralement la sensation de flotter. La lourdeur n’est pas de mise avec Temple Fang, tant la légèreté est justement tout ce qui fait le charme du groupe, jusqu’à sublimer chaque notes jouées avec précision, et chaque partie de morceau dans la plus parfaite délectation sonore, tant l’efficacité d’exécution est absolument parfaite et au millimètre près. Une démonstration de compositions sonores qui nous laisse bouche bée, tant l’on frise la frontière entre le réel et l’irréel, la réalité et le rêve éveillé. Avec deux albums à leur actif Temple Fang (paru en 2021) et Lifted From The Wind (paru en 2025 chez Stickman Records), Un EP Jerusalem / The Bridge (paru en 2022) ainsi qu’une belle collection d’albums live, Temple Fang nous a régalé d’un live radiant et transcendantal à souhait de quarante minutes. Une petite merveille auditive à expérimenter de toute urgence, en live ou tranquillement posé sur un canapé, pour un trip digne de la plus belle transe.

Et maintenant un petit tour du globe avec les Américains de Spirit Mother, venus nous apporter leur drôle de soleil noir, envoutant, beau et tortueux à souhait. Formé en 2020, avec comme noyau dur leur son Heavy Psych vous prenant au tripes, il n’a pas fallu longtemps pour que Spirit Mother réussisse à imposer son style avec poigne au public de The Black Lab, tant dans l’énergie suave et rugueuse qu’il dégage, que dans la grâce de son élément original tellement fidèle à leur son, son violon. Car ce qui donne tout son charme à Spirit Mother, c’est justement cette touche langoureuse de violon sur un son Heavy Psych qui vous tend la main et vous donne envie de bouger de la tête au pied, vous transportant intérieurement en vous invitant à danser, en ajoutant cette émotivité ainsi qu’une profondeur d’âme décuplée à leur musique. Et cette touche si particulière nous plonge au cœur même de ce qu’est toute l’identité musicale de Spirit Mother. Avec leurs rythmiques prenantes et leurs mélodies enivrantes, nos quatre compères ont su s’imposer en tant que fer de lance de la soirée de par la rugosité de leur sonorités, couplée à la douceur de leur violon, en nous faisant part d’une superbe seconde partie parfaitement méritée. Avec leurs ambiances qui sentent bon le rock poisseux venant vous prendre par les tripes pour vous ébranler d’une tonne d’émotions variées nous rappelant par moment la profondeur de l’univers musical de Mark Lanegan. Serpentant dans les moindres recoins de nos âmes perdues, la musique de Spirit Mother est remplie d’audace, de caractère et d’authenticité, reflétant les personnalités profondes des membres du groupe. Une magnifique osmose musicale et langoureuse, presque poétique, bercée par la voix douce voix hantée, tantôt rocailleuse et écorchée d’Armand Lance, nous proposant un panel à la limite du fantomatique. Le tout accompagné d’une basse lourde, d’une batterie percutante, et de mélodies de guitares faisant corps avec la beauté noire de son violon superbement abyssal et mélancolique. Avec deux albums à leur actif, Cadets(paru en 2020) et Trails (paru en 2024 chez Heavy Psych Sounds), un live album Live in the Mojave Desert: Volume 3 (toujours paru en 2021 chez Heavy Psych Sounds), un EP, un single, et deux apparitions dans les compilations Weedian, c’est dans un The Black Lab plein à craquer que Spirit Mother nous aura été une magnifique découverte en nous jouant un live de cinquante minutes, comblant les fans du genre de leur son Heavy Psych et de Heavy Rock, en nous délectant par leurs atmosphères spirituelles, hantées, possédées et d’une intense beauté.

Clou du spectacle histoire de finir cette belle soirée pour fêter la fin de l’été qui approche à grand pas, King Buffalo étaient venus fêter leur troisième passage à The Black Lab, après celui de 2022 et 2023. C’est toujours un plaisir de les revoir, et forcément, les fans du groupe étaient venus nombreux pour avoir la chance d’assister à nouveau à leur show trippant et planant. Personne ne voulait manquer le spectacle visuel et auditif de ce trip interstellaire qu’allait nous offrir King Buffalo pour la troisième fois. Venu de Rochester, le trio New Yorkais, était prêt à mettre le feu avec leur mélange de Rock Psychédélique accompagné de leur touche de Rock Stoner, de Rock Progressif et de Heavy Psych qu’on attendait tous dans la plus grande impatience, prêt à voyager dans la moindre interstice de leurs notes et mélodies. Un voyage totalement immersif tout en profondeur, offert par la virtuosité des solos de guitare de Sean McVay, nous faisant part d’une aisance toute particulière ainsi qu’une légèreté à nous inviter dans le monde intérieur de King Buffalo, le tout accompagné de sa voix si singulière nous emmenant aux frontières des songes intérieurs que petit à petit le groupe nous faisait découvrir. Enchaînant les morceaux ainsi que leurs atmosphères diverses et variées au fur et à mesure que leur show continuait à nous enivrer, le public de The Black Lab était de plus en plus transporté par les différentes ambiances, jusqu’à en voir certains fermer les yeux pour se laisser complétement aspirer par des brèves de rêves éveillés, qui par moment pouvait s’intensifier rythmiquement selon les univers exposés. Doucement mais sûrement, la longueur de leurs morceaux démontre à quel point personne n’avait réellement l’envie d’arrêter ce trip astral tant la magnitude de leurs morceaux nous plongeait dans cette fluidité avenante en toute allégresse. Avec cinq albums à leur actif, dont le dernier en date Regenerator (paru en 2022 chez Stickman Records) trois albums live, un single, divers EP et plusieurs compilations, le trio New Yorkais nous aura livré un set de 11 morceaux en entamant leur show par “Mercury”, puis en enchaînant par d’autres titres phares tel que “Regenerator”, “Mammoth”, et “Eye of the Storm”. King Buffalo nous a agréablement convié lors leur troisième passage à The Black Lab à un voyage d’1h45 à quitter notre propre conscience pour offrir à notre être intérieur la plus belle des danses.

The evening begins calmly and quietly with The Black Lab already packed thanks to Temple Fang, a quartet straight from Amsterdam playing a mix of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and heavy psych. They are the perfect opening act for a gentle introduction, as their very first notes plunge us directly into a completely mind-blowing cosmic trip. We almost want to close our eyes and let ourselves be lulled by the meanderings of their souls, as their music is a true invitation to an inner journey. With them, there are no heavy noise distortions that stain and weigh us down, just ultra-trippy psychedelic rock in its purest tradition, often reminding us of their big brothers from the 60s. Fans of the genre are delighted, as the musical experience offered by Temple Fang remains literally engraved in stone with each of the psychic journeys it takes us on. There is no need for loud sound and endless solos to enter a trance; you just have to let yourself be lulled by the calm and voluptuousness distilled by their unique sound, until you literally feel like you are floating. Heaviness is not the order of the day with Temple Fang, as lightness is precisely what makes the band so charming, sublimating every note played with precision and every part of each song into the most perfect sonic delight, thanks to their absolutely flawless and millimeter-precise execution. A demonstration of sound compositions that leaves us speechless, as we blur the line between the real and the unreal, reality and waking dreams. With two albums to their credit, Temple Fang (released in 2021) and Lifted From The Wind (released in 2025 on Stickman Records), an EP Jerusalem / The Bridge (released in 2022) and a fine collection of live albums, Temple Fang treated us to a radiant and transcendental 40-minute live performance. A little auditory marvel to be experienced urgently, live or quietly sitting on a sofa, for a trip worthy of the most beautiful trance.

And now a little tour of the globe with the Americans of Spirit Mother, who have come to bring us their strange black sun, captivating, beautiful, and tortuous to perfection.Formed in 2020, with their gut-wrenching Heavy Psych sound at their core, it didn’t take long for Spirit Mother to impose their style on the audience at The Black Lab, both in the smooth and rough energy they exude and in the grace of their original element so faithful to their sound, the violin. What gives Spirit Mother its charm is precisely this languid touch of violin over a heavy psych sound that reaches out to you and makes you want to move from head to toe, transporting you inwardly and inviting you to dance, adding emotion and a depth of soul to their music. And this very special touch plunges us into the very heart of Spirit Mother‘s musical identity. With their captivating rhythms and intoxicating melodies, our four friends established themselves as the spearhead of the evening with their rough sound, coupled with the sweetness of their violin, giving us a superb and well-deserved second half. With their atmospheres that smell of sticky rock, grabbing you by the guts and shaking you with a ton of varied emotions, at times reminding us of the depth of Mark Lanegan‘s musical universe. Winding its way into every corner of our lost souls, Spirit Mother’s music is filled with boldness, character, and authenticity, reflecting the deep personalities of the band members. A magnificent musical osmosis, languid and almost poetic, cradled by the soft, haunting voice of Armand Lance, sometimes rough and raw, offering us a range that borders on the ghostly. All accompanied by heavy bass, percussive drums, and guitar melodies that blend with the dark beauty of his superbly abyssal and melancholic violin. With two albums to their credit, Cadets (released in 2020) and Trails (released in 2024 on Heavy Psych Sounds), a live album Live in the Mojave Desert: Volume 3 (also released in 2021 on Heavy Psych Sounds), an EP, a single, and two appearances on the Weedian compilations, it was in a packed The Black Lab that Spirit Mother proved to be a magnificent discovery, playing a fifty-minute live set, delighting fans of the genre with their heavy psych and heavy rock sound, and enthralling us with their spiritual, haunted, possessed atmospheres of intense beauty.

 

The highlight of the show, bringing this wonderful evening to a close and celebrating the end of summer, which is fast approaching, was King Buffalo, who were there to celebrate their third appearance at The Black Lab, following their performances in 2022 and 2023. It’s always a pleasure to see them again, and naturally, the band’s fans turned out in force for the chance to experience their trippy, mind-blowing show once more. No one wanted to miss the visual and auditory spectacle of this interstellar trip that King Buffalo was about to offer us for the third time. Hailing from Rochester, the New York trio was ready to set the stage on fire with their mix of psychedelic rock accompanied by touches of stoner rock, progressive rock, and heavy psych, which we were all eagerly awaiting, ready to travel through every interstice of their notes and melodies. It was a totally immersive, in-depth journey, offered by the virtuosity of Sean McVay‘s guitar solos, which conveyed a particular ease and lightness, inviting us into the inner world of King Buffalo, all accompanied by his unique voice, taking us to the frontiers of inner dreams that the band gradually revealed to us. As the band played one song after another, each with its own diverse and varied atmosphere, the audience at The Black Lab became increasingly transported by the different moods, to the point where some closed their eyes to let themselves be completely sucked into brief daydreams, which at times could intensify rhythmically depending on the universe being explored. Slowly but surely, the length of their songs demonstrated how much no one really wanted this astral trip to end, as the magnitude of their songs plunged us into this welcoming fluidity with complete joy. With five albums to their credit, including their latest, Regenerator (released in 2022 on Stickman Records), three live albums, a single, various EPs, and several compilations, the New York trio delivered an 11-song set, starting their show with “Mercury” and following up with other hits such as “Regenerator,” “Mammoth,” and “Eye of the Storm.” King Buffalo treated us to a delightful 1 hour and 45 minute journey during their third visit to The Black Lab, allowing us to leave our own consciousness behind and offer our inner selves the most beautiful of dances.
