Trois petites années après Of Darkness and Light, le duo Årabrot nous propose un tout nouvel album, Rite of Dionysus, dans la suite direct du précédent, puisqu’ils ont été enregistré à la même période, et pourtant, ce nouvel opus quitte légèrement les gros titres rock noise pour parler de deuil, sous de nombreux aspects pour dix titres plein d’émotions qui va vous hanter tel un fantôme bienveillant.

En 2022, le duo Årabrot est en pleine écriture de leur nouvel album Of Darkness and Light, sur la transcendance de nos propres limites, lorsque la mort vient frapper à la porte. Le deuil et la perte n’était pas le thème principal de leur album, mais pourtant, cela marquera fortement leur créativité, et c’est ainsi que né Rite of Dionysus. L’album s’ouvre donc naturellement avec « I Become Light », image universelle de passage d’une forme à une autre dans la mort. Le son est très électronique, et on perçoit une ambiance assez cérémoniale. Cette transformation est douce, et laissant au deuxième titre « A Different Form » toute la liberté de sortir les distorsions. Ce morceau est beaucoup plus ressemblant aux morceaux de leur album précédent, et fait le lien parfait avec leur origine musicale. Mais qui dit origine dit aussi inspiration.
Retour en 2022, le monde entier pleure la mort de Taylor Hawkins, batteur des Foo Fighters. Alain Johannes, producteur de légende, et en cours de travail avec Årabrot emmène avec lui Kjetil Nernes à Wembley pour jouer au concert hommage du batteur. C’est donc entouré des plus gros noms du rock’n’roll mondial, comme Liam Gallagher, Brian May, Paul McCartney… qu’ils se retrouvent à la frontière entre commémoration, acceptation du deuil, et puit d’inspiration. Le morceau « Rock’N’Roll Star » sortira de cette expérience, nous rappelant les titres de Bruce Springsteen à laquelle on aurait simplement ajouter le chant de Kjetil, sans retirer sa fameuse réverbération si caractéristique. Karin Park n’est pas en reste, offrant un superbe coeur vocal en fin de morceau, pour déposer un vrai sentiment d’espoir sur le titre.
La force d’Årabrot se trouve dans cette capacité à faire de chacun de leurs morceaux des univers à parts entières, où les sonorités sont si loin les unes des autres, mais qui savent se lier parfaitement. C’est le cas des trois morceaux suivants, qui sont également les trois singles de cet album. Un titre calme sur la perte d’un parent, un titre envoûtant et enfin un morceau cérémonial. Dans tous les cas, le duo sait venir vous toucher en plein coeur, et le titre « Death Sings His Slow Song » vous hantera pendant très longtemps, surtout la section en « la la la », chanté en fin de morceau. Pour faire le lien direct avec l’album précédent, on retrouve un morceau qui porte tout simplement le nom de l’album « Of Darkness and Light », où Karin est maitresse des claviers et mixe l’électronique avec qualité. Le titre est prenant, quasiment autant que le titre de clôture « The Lunar Menses » qui aurait pu clairement être le single de cet album. Avec ses sonorités plus pop électro, il en devient le morceau le plus accessible de cet album, donnant beaucoup de lumière à un album au thème très sombre.
Årabrot régalent, comme à leur habitude, avec un album assez différent des précédents, qui permets d’appréhender la mort sous différents angles, et à différentes étapes. La transformation, le recueillement, la colère, la célébration. Tout y est, et il est sûr que cet album saura vous parler, à un moment dans cette épreuve qu’est la vie.

Three short years after Of Darkness and Light, the duo Årabrot is back with a brand new album, Rite of Dionysus, which follows on directly from its predecessor, having been recorded during the same period. However, this new opus moves slightly away from rock noise headlines to explore the theme of mourning in many different ways, with ten emotionally charged tracks that will haunt you like a benevolent ghost.
In 2022, the duo Årabrot is busy writing their new album Of Darkness and Light, about transcending our own limits when death comes knocking at the door. Grief and loss were not the main themes of their album, but they had a strong influence on their creativity, and that is how Rite of Dionysus came to be. The album naturally opens with ‘I Become Light’, a universal image of the transition from one form to another in death. The sound is very electronic, and there is a rather ceremonial atmosphere. This transformation is gentle, leaving the second track, ‘A Different Form’, free to bring out the distortions. This track is much more similar to the tracks on their previous album and is the perfect link to their musical origins. But origins also mean inspiration.
Back in 2022, the whole world mourns the death of Taylor Hawkins, drummer for the Foo Fighters. Legendary producer Alain Johannes, who was working with Årabrot at the time, took Kjetil Nernes with him to Wembley to play at the drummer’s tribute concert. Surrounded by some of the biggest names in global rock “n” roll, such as Liam Gallagher, Brian May and Paul McCartney, they found themselves caught between commemoration, acceptance of grief and a wellspring of inspiration. The track ‘Rock’N’Roll Star’ emerged from this experience, reminding us of Bruce Springsteen’s songs, to which Kjetil’s vocals have been added, without removing his famous characteristic reverb. Karin Park is not to be outdone, offering a superb vocal chorus at the end of the track, imbuing it with a real sense of hope.
Årabrot‘s strength lies in their ability to make each of their tracks a world unto itself, where the sounds are so far apart from each other, yet blend together perfectly. This is the case with the following three tracks, which are also the three singles from this album. A calm track about the loss of a parent, a haunting track, and finally a ceremonial track. In all cases, the duo knows how to touch your heart, and the track ‘Death Sings His Slow Song’ will haunt you for a long time, especially the ‘la la la’ section sung at the end of the song. To make a direct link with the previous album, there is a track simply named after the album, ‘Of Darkness and Light’, where Karin is the master of the keyboards and mixes electronics with quality. The track is captivating, almost as much as the closing track ‘The Lunar Menses’, which could clearly have been the single from this album. With its more electro-pop sounds, it becomes the most accessible track on the album, bringing a lot of light to an album with a very dark theme.
Årabrot delight us, as usual, with an album that is quite different from their previous ones, allowing us to approach death from different angles and at different stages. Transformation, contemplation, anger, celebration. It’s all there, and this album is sure to speak to you at some point in the ordeal that is life.
