Not Scientists,  qui regroupe plusieurs musiciens des célèbres ex-Uncommonmenfrommars, est à son tour devenu un groupe incontournable sur toutes les scènes du pays. La formation est sans cesse sous les route, et trouve pourtant le temps de nous offrir VOICES, son quatrième album. Il est à paraitre le 5 septembre via Kicking Records.

Après un virage entrepris depuis Golden Staples, Not Scientists a intégré des sonorités new wave à ses albums et EP. Leur identité est bien marquée, mais toujours en évolution, et on les suit avidement sortie après sortie. Avec “CAUGHT IN A WEB” qui ouvre ce nouvel opus, VOICES, on retrouve rapidement la reverb dans la voix de Ed. On est parfaitement dans un album de Not Scientists ! Toutefois on entend vite que le groupe est encore allé chercher d’autres influences. Les sonorités sont particulièrement travaillées, et bien plus complexes qu’un punk rock basique. Le groupe garde le côté très efficace des morceaux, avec notamment “THE CITY CALLS” ou “BURN OUT”, qui semblent être taillés pour la scène. “BURN OUT” est d’ailleurs, à mon sens, le titre le plus emblématique de cet album, avec des distos inattendues, une émotion à couper le souffle, une mélodie entêtante… “CUL DE SAC” apporte également sa touche d’originalité, laissant ici une belle place à la section rythmique de Tatane (basse) et Le Bazile (batterie), avec un synthé un peu moins présent et une cadence plus rapide. Les mélodies restent légion dans VOICES. Certains titres se font même assez ambiants et planants comme “MAZE” avec ses gammes descendantes, ou “BALL AND CHAIN”. Celui-ci aurait même pu clore l’album, laissant une impression de songe, de moment suspendu. Toutefois l’opus comporte une douzième plage, “The Architects”, qui arrive encore à nous surprendre par ses sonorités. On se laisse facilement prendre par VOICES, particulièrement bien construit. Les guitares de Fred et Ed viennent parfois nous surprendre avec une petite saturation qu’on ne trouvait pas forcément dans les derniers opus du groupe. On voyage aussi dans le temps avec un côté plus old school dans “I REMEMBER” par exemple. “VOICES” donne à entendre des sonorités des balades de Blink 182, mais marquées par une certaine maturité et toujours par la reverb dans la voix de Ed. Des petites notes de post-rock viennent même effleurer notre oreille avec “BALL AND CHAIN” tandis que le post punk se rappelle à nous avec “HURRICANE”. On ne s’ennuie jamais, sans pour autant perdre le fil. L’opus est construit de manière à nous conforter dans l’esprit de Not Scientists, puis à venir progressivement nous surprendre, touche par touche. Les titres abordent autant des tranches de vie qu’une vision du monde, pas forcément la plus optimiste, mais bien ancrée dans le réel. Les émotions qui émanent des douze titres, sont d’une grande authenticité qui caractérise le punk rock. Ce côté sentimental, évoquant la complexité des émotions et du monde est d’ailleurs présent dès l’artwork de cet opus, d’une très grande beauté, entre tendre embrassade et regards détournés. 

VOICES est un opus d’une très grande qualité. On y retrouve toujours ce synthé, cette reverb, ces guitares mélodiques… Tout ce qui fait la recette de Not Scientists depuis Golden Staples. Le groupe est pourtant allé chercher encore plus loin, incorporant des sonorités inédites dans leur discographie. VOICES est plus complexe, plus sophistiqué que ses prédécesseurs, mais on lui retrouve toujours ce côté authentique du punk-rock. Ces musiciens de haut vol vont toujours chercher plus loin, et ils ne semblent pas être prêts à se reposer sur leurs lauriers!

Not Scientists, which brings together several musicians from the famous former band Uncommonmenfrommars, has in turn become a must-see band on all French stages. The band is constantly on the road, yet still finds time to bring us VOICES, their fourth album. It will be released on September 5th via Kicking Records.

After a shift in direction since Golden Staples, Not Scientists has incorporated new wave sounds into its albums and EPs. Their identity is well established, but always evolving, and we eagerly follow them release after release. With ‘CAUGHT IN A WEB’ opening this new opus, VOICES, we quickly recognise the reverb in Ed’s voice. We are definitely listening to a Not Scientists album! However, it soon becomes clear that the band has sought out other influences. The sounds are particularly polished and much more complex than basic punk rock. The band retains the highly effective side of the tracks, notably with ‘THE CITY CALLS’ and ‘BURN OUT’, which seem tailor-made for the stage. In my opinion, ‘BURN OUT’ is the most emblematic track on the album, with unexpected distortion, breathtaking emotion and a haunting melody. ‘CUL DE SAC’ also brings a touch of originality, giving pride of place to the rhythm section of Tatane (bass) and Le Bazile (drums), with a slightly less prominent synth and a faster tempo. Melodies abound in VOICES. Some tracks are even quite ambient and dreamy, such as ‘MAZE’ with its descending scales, or ‘BALL AND CHAIN’. This track could even have closed the album, leaving a dreamlike impression, a moment suspended in time. However, the opus includes a twelfth track, ‘The Architects’, which still manages to surprise us with its sounds. It’s easy to get caught up in VOICES, which is particularly well constructed. Fred and Ed‘s guitars sometimes surprise us with a slight saturation that wasn’t necessarily found in the band’s previous albums. We also travel back in time with a more old-school feel in ‘I REMEMBER’, for example. ‘VOICES’ evokes the sounds of Blink 182’s ballads, but marked by a certain maturity and still featuring reverb in Ed‘s voice. Small touches of post-rock even brush our ears with ‘BALL AND CHAIN’, while post-punk comes to mind with ‘HURRICANE’. We are never bored, without ever losing the thread. The opus is constructed in such a way as to comfort us in the spirit of Not Scientists, then gradually surprise us, touch by touch. The tracks deal as much with slices of life as with a vision of the world, not necessarily the most optimistic, but firmly rooted in reality. The emotions that emanate from the twelve tracks are imbued with the authenticity that characterises punk rock. This sentimental side, evoking the complexity of emotions and the world, is also present in the artwork for this album, which is extremely beautiful, somewhere between a tender embrace and averted glances.

VOICES is a work of exceptional quality. It features the same synth, reverb and melodic guitars that have been the hallmark of Not Scientists since Golden Staples. However, the band has gone even further, incorporating new sounds into their discography. VOICES is more complex and sophisticated than its predecessors, but it still retains that authentic punk rock feel. These top-flight musicians are always pushing the boundaries, and they don’t seem ready to rest on their laurels!
