Après l’EP Portraits I (2019) puis Portraits II (2023) les nordistes de November ferment le triptyque avec Portraits III. Un nouvel opus plus mélodique que jamais, pour l’un des groupes de hardcore immanquable des Hauts de France. L’EP sera disponible ce cinq septembre chez CNVX Records et Believe Music.

Dès le premier titre “Promises”, une longue intro nous fait comprendre que le pli a été pris sur la mélodie pour ce dernier EP du triptyque. A la manière sur Portraits II , on a cette introduction puis un gang vocal qu’on peut retrouver sur “We are”. Comme à leur habitude, le groupe incorpore de la politique et des samples dans leur titre. Sur ce titre nous avons le droit à un petit passage de Bertrand Russell (philosophe britannique) sur l’apprentissage de la tolérance et le vivre ensemble.
Dans la même lignée et à l’instar de la pochette d’album, l’EP assoie un message politique qui est le fer de lance du titre “Reset/Rebuilt”. Titre qui se veut beaucoup plus dans la veine Hardcore / Metalcore qu’on pouvait retrouver beaucoup plus sur Portrait I. Le côté Metalcore année 2010 qu’on retrouvera plus sur le titre “Balance” avec ce gros riff de metalcore moderne qui nous rentre direct dedans pour finir avec un petit solo vers la fin du titre qui met bien en lumière la mélodie du morceau sans non plus trop en faire.
Nous passons sur la grande surprise de l’EP, “And the Colors start to fade”. Véritable bonbon de nostalgie ou comme dirait Gauthier, chanteur du groupe “ un regard sur une photo sépia”. On a rarement vu November se prêter autant au côté mélodique jusqu’à en arriver à toucher du bout des doigts le post-rock. On y retrouve d’ailleurs Danny Cummings de Fair Do’s qui vient prêter sa voix sur quelques lignes renforçant le côté Punk de ce morceau très mélancolique.
On termine l’EP avec “The Leaving (We were)” qui sonne plutôt comme un au-revoir au triptyque Portrait. On voit assez rapidement le clin d’œil à “We are” du précédent EP mais aussi dans les lyrics où le groupe reprend “ We Carry on, carry on” déjà sur le titre. Une belle manière de clore ce chapitre avec une version remasterisée de “We are” ,cette fois à l’instar de l’album beaucoup plus de mélodie et de mélancolie.
Nous sentons bien que November a bien mûri dans leur approche sur le projet et que le son trouvé sur Portrait II continue bien sa voie sur Portraits III. Le cap et les idées sont toujours tenus sans faire de compromis sur leur petite tambouille qu’ils ont réussi à obtenir. Beaucoup de nostalgie se dégage de cet EP, qui signe la fin des Portraits et le début d’un nouveau chapitre pour le groupe que l’on apprécie voir évoluer.
Avec cet EP s’ensuit deux release show, un à Boulogne sur Mer le 28 septembre à la Grange et le 27 septembre à Lille au High Voltage Bar.

After the EP Portraits I (2019) and Portraits II (2023), November from northern France close the trilogy with Portraits III. A new opus that is more melodic than ever, from one of the must-see hardcore bands in the Hauts-de-France region. The EP will be available on September 5th from CNVX Records and Believe Music.

From the very first track, “Promises,” a long intro makes it clear that melody has taken center stage on this final EP in the trilogy. As on Portraits II, we have this introduction followed by a gang vocal that can also be found on “We Are.” As usual, the band incorporates politics and samples into their tracks. On this track, we are treated to a short passage by Bertrand Russell (British philosopher) on learning tolerance and living together.
In the same vein, and like the album cover, the EP establishes a political message that is the spearhead of the track “Reset/Rebuilt.” This track is much more in the hardcore/metalcore vein than we heard on Portrait I. The 2010 metalcore side is more evident on the track “Balance” with its heavy modern metalcore riff that hits us right away, ending with a short solo towards the end of the track that highlights the melody without overdoing it.
We move on to the big surprise of the EP, “And the Colors Start to Fade.” A real treat for nostalgia lovers, or as Gauthier, the band’s singer, would say, “a look at a sepia photo.” Rarely have we seen November lend itself so much to the melodic side, to the point of touching post-rock with its fingertips. Danny Cummings from Fair Do‘s lends his voice to a few lines, reinforcing the punk side of this very melancholic track.
The EP ends with “The Leaving (We Were),” which sounds more like a farewell to the Portrait trilogy. We quickly see the nod to “We Are” from the previous EP, but also in the lyrics, where the band reprises “We Carry On, Carry On” from that track. It’s a beautiful way to close this chapter with a remastered version of “We Are,” this time, like the album, with much more melody and melancholy.
We can sense that November has matured in their approach to the project and that the sound found on Portraits II continues on Portrait III. They stay the course and stick to their ideas without compromising on the little concoction they have managed to achieve. There is a lot of nostalgia in this EP, which marks the end of the Portraits and the beginning of a new chapter for the band, whose evolution we enjoy watching.
This EP will be followed by two release shows, one in Boulogne-sur-Mer on September 28th at La Grange and the other on September 27th in Lille at the High Voltage Bar.
