Une fois de plus, c’est à La Griffe que nous nous sommes rendus le 11 septembre. La cave abrite de plus en plus d’évènements qualitatifs qui nous font bouger. Jeudi dernier c’était donc les nordistes de Céphalée et de Gaze, ainsi que les anglais de Stay in Nothing qui foulaient la scène lilloise.

La Griffe est saturée avant l’ouverture de la cave. Lorsque Céphalée démarre, le monde se précipite dans la cave, provoquant une affluence qui nous fait rater les quelques premières secondes. Julien (chant) est devant la scène, armé de son micro filaire. Il s’époumone face à une cave particulièrement remplie. Les parties qui allient mélodie côté musicien et cris bien énervés côté chant sont particulièrement remarquables. Les petits pains rythmiques sont bien vite oubliés et on sent un réel engouement dans le public. Céphalée nous partage de nouveaux titres comme “Orchid”. Celui-ci laisse place à un chant dans la veine screamo, posé sur des lignes de guitares très mélodiques. Sur les passages les plus calmes, la voix passe totalement au-dessus, la musique ne se limitant plus qu’au strict minimum, présente uniquement pour soutenir le chant. Les émotions brutes que cela véhicule sont prenantes. Sur les passages qui demandent plus de puissance, Jordan (guitare) assure les choeurs. A l’arrière, Pierre (batterie) module parfaitement les nuances entre explosion post hardcore et moments plus en retrait. Le groupe gère les aléas d’une main de maître, à l’instar d’un câble défectueux. Parfois les lignes de basse se font plus présentes et transmettent une certaine gravité, une lourdeur, aux titres. Julien ne faiblit pas du concert et dégage une énergie folle. La prestation se finit sur des notes davantage post hardcore. Le public bouge (enfin de ce qu’il peut car tout la masse est compacte!), et le groupe est très chaleureusement acclamé à la fin de la prestation. Céphalée a su fédérer son public qui en redemande. Les titres sont parfois très différents, oscillant toujours entre screamo et hardcore / post hardcore. On a hâte de continuer à suivre l’évolution du groupe qui, on n’en doute pas, va progressivement se forger une identité solide.
On continue la soirée avec les anglais de Stay in Nothing. La cave est un peu moins pleine, certains étant restés en haut pour discuter. Le groupe de Londres démarre sur les chapeaux de roue avec un titre très énergique qui rappelle les derniers retardataires. Puis la voix vient délicatement se poser. L’ambiance se mue alors très vite dans une sorte de post punk très chill. Le trio offre des compositions lentes, toutes en émotions. La guitare mélodique semble nous envoûter. L’alliance des voix masculine et féminine apporte une dimension autre, et une belle profondeur sur certains passages. Le son de guitare nous rappelle parfois celui de Not Scientists et colore le shoegaze du groupe de sonorités post punk à certains moments. Les londoniens interprètent “How I Feel”, single sorti deux jours plus tôt. Ils se mettent même en danger en jouant un titre pour la première fois en live. Celui-ci est sur un tempo un peu plus rapide, et amène une énergie dynamique. Stay in Nothing enchaîne avec un titre lent avant de terminer leur set par une autre composition plutôt entrainante. On a ainsi eu toute la palette des émotions qu’ils peuvent véhiculer grâce à des titres aux tempos différents. Le public est resté scotché de bout en bout face à leur prestation, signe d’une belle accroche chez les spectateurs lillois.
Malheureusement nous ne verrons pas le set de Gaze, la fatigue de la semaine commençant à faire son chemin avec l’heure avançant! On sait que cela n’est que partie remise puisque le groupe est de la région. On a passé une fois de plus une très belle soirée à La Griffe, en compagnie de groupes talentueux qui montrent à quel point les scènes locales et internationales regorgent toujours de nouvelles petite pépites à découvrir .

Once again, we headed to La Griffe on September 11th. The venue is hosting more and more high-quality events that get us moving. Last Thursday, it was the northerners from Céphalée and Gaze, as well as the English band Stay in Nothing, who took to the stage in Lille.

La Griffe is packed before the cellar opens. When Céphalée starts playing, people rush into the cellar, causing a crowd that makes us miss the first few seconds. Julien (vocals) is in front of the stage, armed with his wired microphone. He sings his heart out in front of a particularly crowded cellar. The parts that combine melody on the musical side and angry screams on the vocal side are particularly remarkable. The rhythmic bread rolls are quickly forgotten and there is a real buzz in the audience. Céphalée shares new tracks with us, such as ‘Orchid’. This gives way to screamo-style vocals, set to very melodic guitar lines. During the quieter passages, the vocals take centre stage, with the music reduced to the bare minimum, present only to support the singing. The raw emotions this conveys are captivating. On the passages that require more power, Jordan (guitar) provides backing vocals. At the back, Pierre (drums) perfectly modulates the nuances between post-hardcore explosions and quieter moments. The band handles the unexpected with masterful skill, like a faulty cable. Sometimes the bass lines become more prominent, lending a certain gravity and heaviness to the songs. Julien doesn’t let up throughout the concert and exudes incredible energy. The performance ends on a more post-hardcore note. The audience moves (as much as they can, given how compact the crowd is!), and the band is warmly applauded at the end of the show. Céphalée has won over its audience, who are left wanting more. The songs are sometimes very different, always oscillating between screamo and hardcore/post-hardcore. We can’t wait to continue following the evolution of the band, which we have no doubt will gradually forge a solid identity for itself.
We continue the evening with the English band Stay in Nothing. The cellar is a little less crowded, as some people have stayed upstairs to chat. The London band gets off to a flying start with a very energetic track that brings back the last latecomers. Then the vocals gently settle in. The atmosphere quickly shifts to a kind of very chill post-punk. The trio offers slow, emotional compositions. The melodic guitar seems to cast a spell over us. The combination of male and female vocals adds another dimension and a beautiful depth to certain passages. The guitar sound is sometimes reminiscent of Not Scientists and colours the band’s shoegaze with post-punk tones at times. The Londoners perform ‘How I Feel’, a single released two days earlier. They even take a risk by playing a song live for the first time. It has a slightly faster tempo and brings a dynamic energy. Stay in Nothing follows with a slow song before ending their set with another rather catchy composition. We were treated to the full range of emotions they can convey through songs with different tempos. The audience was glued to their performance from start to finish, a sign of their appeal to the Lille crowd.
Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing Gaze’s set, as the fatigue of the week is starting to set in with the hours passing by! We know it’s only a matter of time, as the band is from the area. Once again, we had a wonderful evening at La Griffe, in the company of talented bands who show how the local and international scenes are always full of new gems to discover.
