Après un premier album déjà très abouti et remarqué du public, Castle Rat reviennent sur le devant de la scène le 19 septembre avec leur nouveau disque The Bestiary, publié via King Volume Records & Blues Funeral Recordings.

37 minutes : c’est le temps qu’il a fallu pour atteindre l’objectif du Kickstarter lancé par le quatuor américain afin de produire ce nouvel album. En effet, la campagne, initialement prévue pour durer un mois, a finalement réuni… 139 000 dollars, ce qui en fait le succès le plus retentissant de la scène metal depuis une dizaine d’années ! Passé ce chiffre, inutile de préciser que le groupe n’avait pas le droit à l’erreur tant l’attente autour de The Bestiary était grande.
Castle Rat débarquent donc avec cette nouvelle production composée de treize morceaux, toujours ancrés dans l’univers « Medieval Fantasy Heavy Metal », et enregistrée avec l’aide d’un certain Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Wolves in the Throne Room, Björk). Cette composition est décrite comme un « livre conceptuel de créatures, rassemblant une collection d’êtres mystiques venus d’un monde oublié ». On le remarque aisément rien qu’aux titres des chansons de ce recueil, notamment “PHOENIX”, “UNICORN” et “DRAGON”.
Cet album est pensé comme une œuvre littéraire à travers laquelle nous suivons l’histoire de The Rat Queen, alias Riley Pinkerton, la chanteuse et guitariste rythmique, dans sa lutte pour défendre son royaume face à la mort incarnée par The Rat Reaperess (la Faucheuse de Rats). Heureusement pour elle, elle est rejointe par plusieurs compagnons : Franco “The Count” Vittore (guitariste solo), Charley “The Plague Doctor” Ruddell (bassiste) et Joshua “The All-Seeing Druid” Strmic (batteur).
Castle Rat débute son aventure par l’inquiétante introduction “PHOENIX I”, nous immergeant sans plus attendre dans cet univers fantastique. Le récit bénéficie également d’une interlude bienvenue, “PATH OF MOSS”, placée au beau milieu du disque. Les choses sérieuses commencent véritablement avec “WOLF I” et ses guitares saturées, accompagnées par la voix incantatoire et quasi théâtrale de la Reine Rat. Cela en fait un premier long morceau si hypnotisant qu’on a du mal à s’en détacher ! L’ensemble des titres de The Bestiary possède plus ou moins cet effet sur l’auditeur… à croire que le groupe cherche à nous ensorceler ! Comme son nom l’indique, la seconde chanson, “WIZARD”, met en scène le sorcier de ce royaume magique, au rythme d’un riff diablement envoûtant. À travers ce titre, Castle Rat cherche à connecter l’ensemble des chansons du projet. “WIZARD” offre au passage un solo captivant de Franco Vittore, qui a d’ailleurs parsemé The Bestiary de nombreux autres solis, notamment sur “SERPENT” et “SIREN”. Au milieu des chansons au rythme endiablé se trouvent d’autres perles auditives où la superbe voix de Riley retentit avec une douceur presque irréelle. Son chant onirique sur “CRYSTAL CAVE” ou encore “WOLF II”, sublimé par les cordes, en constitue le parfait exemple. Avant de refermer cette parenthèse fantastique avec la bucolique outro “PHOENIX II”, un sort d’invocation sous forme de transition est lancé (“SUMMONING SPELL”), menant ensuite à l’apothéose de la frénétique et épique “SUN SONG”.
Castle Rat signent à nouveau un album plus que convaincant tout en affirmant leur esthétique, inspirée des univers graphiques de Frank Frazetta et des sonorités de Black Sabbath. Aux termes d’un généreux recueil d’environ quarante-huit minutes, les New-Yorkais alternent entre des sons plus ou moins rythmés mais toujours excellents. Appartenant plutôt au doom metal, Castle Rat proposent, entre autres, des refrains accrocheurs, le tout saupoudré de heavy metal traditionnel. Cette nouvelle production ravira les fans de la première heure, mais séduira également quiconque pourrait se laisser envoûter par la Reine Rat. Attention à vous !
Castle Rat est à retrouver en tournée avec un passage à la Bulle Café de Lille le 2 novembre prochain.

37 minutes: that’s how long it took to reach the Kickstarter goal set by the American quartet to produce this new album. The campaign, initially planned to last a month, ultimately raised $139,000, making it the most resounding success in the metal scene in a decade! With this figure in mind, it goes without saying that the band had no room for error, given the high expectations surrounding The Bestiary.
Castle Rat are back with this new 13-track album, still rooted in the world of “Medieval Fantasy Heavy Metal” and recorded with the help of Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Wolves in the Throne Room, Björk). This composition is described as a “conceptual book of creatures, bringing together a collection of mystical beings from a forgotten world.” This is easily noticeable just from the titles of the songs in this collection, notably “PHOENIX,” “UNICORN,” and “DRAGON.”
This album is conceived as a literary work through which we follow the story of The Rat Queen, aka Riley Pinkerton, the singer and rhythm guitarist, in her struggle to defend her kingdom against death incarnated by The Rat Reaperess. Fortunately for her, she is joined by several companions: Franco “The Count” Vittore (lead guitarist), Charley “The Plague Doctor” Ruddell (bassist), and Joshua “The All-Seeing Druid” Strmic (drummer).
Castle Rat begins its adventure with the disturbing introduction “PHOENIX I,” immediately immersing us in this fantastical universe. The story also benefits from a welcome interlude, “PATH OF MOSS,” placed right in the middle of the album. Things really get serious with “WOLF I” and its saturated guitars, accompanied by the incantatory and almost theatrical voice of the Rat Queen. This makes for a first long track so hypnotic that it’s hard to tear yourself away from it! All of the tracks on The Bestiary have more or less the same effect on the listener… it’s as if the band is trying to bewitch us! As its name suggests, the second song, “WIZARD,” features the wizard of this magical kingdom, set to a devilishly captivating riff. Through this track, Castle Rat seeks to connect all of the songs on the project. “WIZARD” also features a captivating solo by Franco Vittore, who has sprinkled The Bestiary with many other solos, notably on ‘SERPENT’ and “SIREN.” Amidst the frenzied rhythms of the songs are other auditory gems where Riley’s superb voice rings out with an almost unreal sweetness.
His dreamlike vocals on “CRYSTAL CAVE” and “WOLF II,” enhanced by strings, are perfect examples of this. Before closing this fantastic interlude with the bucolic outro “PHOENIX II,” a summoning spell in the form of a transition is cast (“SUMMONING SPELL”), leading to the apotheosis of the frenetic and epic “SUN SONG.”
Castle Rat have once again produced a more than convincing album while affirming their aesthetic, inspired by the graphic worlds of Frank Frazetta and the sounds of Black Sabbath. In this generous collection of around forty-eight minutes, the New Yorkers alternate between more or less rhythmic but always excellent sounds. Belonging more to the doom metal genre, Castle Rat offers, among other things, catchy choruses, all sprinkled with traditional heavy metal. This new production will delight long-time fans, but will also appeal to anyone who could be enchanted by the Rat Queen. Beware!
