Ce 17 septembre, GZL VNR et Mohammed Dali nous donnait rendez-vous à la Malterie pour une soirée Post/Rock, Ambient. Le duo canadien Nadja était accompagné des parisiens de Bank Myna, et de notre artiste locale Sunwell. On vous raconte cette belle soirée.

Ce soir là, le collectif GZL VNR fait son deuxième concert, et le tout premier à la Malterie. Avant de vous parler de cette belle soirée, revenons quelques instants sur ce collectif sans mecs cis qui cherche à amener plus de femmes et de minorités de genre dans le monde du spectacle et sur la scène lilloise en tout genre Ainsi nous pouvons voir fleurir des ateliers d’apprentissage en non mixité, des jams. Pour reprendre les propos d’Anna sur l’interview avec Louise Bihan « créer des appels d’air ailleurs. On veut dire aux meufs et aux minorités de genre : vous pouvez venir sur scène, vous entraîner, vous sentir plus légitimes ».
On démarre donc la soirée avec Sunwell, proposition musicale/ poétique de la part de Elya que l’on connaît déjà notamment dans Deûle, Ladeûlas, Otto Ruth ou encore Death By Fog, ou Morveux. En bref, l’une des artistes les plus prolifique de la scène Lilloise, et également une des fondatrices de GZL VNR. Drapée de noir de la tête aux pieds, nous avons l’impression de faire face à un figurine de la nuit venant nous raconter ses aventures passées. Ami amoureux de câble management, vous n’allez pas être déçu. Elya maîtrise à merveille les différents effets, textures, nappes sonores qu’elle amène avec sa guitare et sa voix durant sa prestation. Une scénographie très minimaliste au milieu de cette scène, pivotant sur sa chaise entre les deux pedalboard, Sunwell remplie son rôle de conteuse d’histoires à la perfection, le public s’asseyant pour ne louper aucune miette. Un set très intimiste qui a permis de rentrer de la meilleure des manières dans cette soirée.
Nous passons ensuite au post Rock de Bank Myna, groupe parisien que nous avons déjà pu expérimenter au Post in Paris en 2023. De la présence intimiste de Sunwell, nous arrivons au quatuor qui déborde de la scène de la Malterie. Le groupe arrive avec un attirail d’instruments à ne plus savoir quoi en faire un clavier, un violon et des ustensiles de percussion pour les instruments à corde. Ainsi nous avons pu voir une guitare jouée comme un violon, une basse qui a pris des coups de baguette de batterie. Un son original, très cinématographique qui a pu me faire penser à la BO de Death Stranding notamment sur “No Ocean of Thoughts” . La voix de Maud embellit à merveille ce mélange envoûtant où la percussion est le centre névralgique rendant la prestation du groupe à la frontière du spirituel. Les incantations à répétition ont réussi à emmener toute la salle dans l’univers du groupe qui nous amène tout doucement vers le doom drone de Nadja.
Grande première du genre pour ma part avec Nadja, nous soulignerons encore une fois le nombre de pédales d’effets présent pour envoyer un mur de son avec seulement deux personnes aux commandes. Aiden et Eliah nous emmènent depuis 2002 dans leur environnement dreamy sludge, très pesant dans la manière de texturer le son. Le mixage audio, caractérisé par des basses fréquences riches et des guitares présentes, confère à l’ensemble une dimension sonore immersive. Le groupe manifeste une attention soutenue à la texture sonore, à l’espace occupé par le son et à l’effet de « vague » qui s’intensifie progressivement. Le public, calme et attentif, se laisse porter par les longues nappes sonores tout au long de la prestation du duo.
Les trois groupes ont su répondre à cette affiche assez éclectique dans les différentes approches des couches sonores et de la manière de le retranscrire au public, on saluera la gestion des percussions pour chaque groupe pour fournir leur vision musicale.
Nous n’oublierons pas de souligner l’importance des lieux comme la Malterie qui encore une fois subi la gentrification des espaces culturelles en France. Ce lieu est malheureusement menacée d’expulsion après une augmentation du loyer de plus de 50%. Une situation intenable pour les résidents du lieux, mais aussi tous les acteurs de cette scène underground. On September 17th, GZL VNR and Mohammed Dali invited us to La Malterie for an evening of post-rock and ambient music. Canadian duo Nadja was joined by Parisian band Bank Myna and local artist Sunwell. Here’s our recap of this wonderful evening.

That evening, the GZL VNR collective gave its second concert, and its very first at La Malterie. Before telling you about this wonderful evening, let’s take a moment to talk about this collective, which has no cis men and seeks to bring more women and gender minorities into the world of entertainment and onto the Lille stage in all its forms. As a result, we are seeing the emergence of single-sex learning workshops and jams. To quote Anna from her interview with Louise Bihan, “we want to create opportunities elsewhere. We want to tell women and gender minorities: you can come on stage, practice, and feel more legitimate.”
So we kick off the evening with Sunwell, a musical/poetic offering from Elya, whom we already know from Deûle, Ladeûlas, Otto Ruth, Death By Fog, and Morveux. In short, she is one of the most prolific artists on the Lille scene, and also one of the founders of GZL VNR. Draped in black from head to toe, we feel as if we are facing a figure from the night, coming to tell us about her past adventures. If you love cable management, you won’t be disappointed. Elya masterfully controls the different effects, textures, and soundscapes she creates with her guitar and voice during her performance. With a very minimalist set design in the middle of the stage, pivoting on her chair between the two pedalboards, Sunwell fulfills her role as a storyteller to perfection, with the audience sitting down so as not to miss a single note. It was a very intimate set that provided the perfect start to the evening.
We then move on to the post-rock of Bank Myna, a Parisian band we already had the chance to experience at the Post in Paris in 2023. From the intimate presence of Sunwell, we arrive at the quartet that bursts onto the stage at La Malterie. The band arrives with an array of instruments, including a keyboard, a violin, and percussion instruments for string instruments. We saw a guitar played like a violin and a bass hit with drumsticks. An original, very cinematic sound that reminded me of the Death Stranding soundtrack, particularly on “No Ocean of Thoughts.” Maud‘s voice beautifully embellishes this spellbinding mix, where percussion is the nerve center, making the band’s performance border on the spiritual. The repeated incantations succeeded in transporting the entire audience into the band’s universe, slowly leading us towards Nadja’s doom drone.
A first for me in this music genre with Nadja, we would like to highlight once again the number of effects pedals used to create a wall of sound with only two people at the controls. Since 2002, Aiden and Eliah have been transporting us into their dreamy sludge environment, with a very heavy approach to texturing sound. The audio mix, characterized by rich low frequencies and prominent guitars, gives the whole thing an immersive sound dimension. The band shows a sustained attention to sound texture, the space occupied by the sound, and the “wave” effect that gradually intensifies. The audience, calm and attentive, lets itself be carried away by the long layers of sound throughout the duo’s performance.
The three bands responded well to this rather eclectic lineup, each with their own approach to sound layers and how to convey them to the audience. We applaud each band’s use of percussion to convey their musical vision.
We must not forget to highlight the importance of venues such as La Malterie, which is once again suffering from the gentrification of cultural spaces in France. Unfortunately, this venue is threatened with eviction after a rent increase of more than 50%. This is an untenable situation for the residents of the venue, but also for all those involved in this underground scene.
