Quasiment deux ans jour pour jour après la sortie de Waterfall Cave Fantasy, Forever que nous vous avions vivement conseillé, le duo Britannico-Finlandais Nyos est de retour ce 10 octobre avec Growl, leur nouvel album, toujours chez Pelagic Records. Cet album, qualifié d’expérimental post rock repousse les limites du free jazz et math rock précédemment installées pour faire de ce projet musical, un groupe singulier et passionnant.

Ce nouvel album de Nyos est passionant ! Avec la volonté de mixer encore plus profondément toutes leurs inspirations, le groupe nous emmène dans un tourbillon de free jazz, comme à leurs habitudes, avec de superbes moments assez post métal, et ce, dès le premier titre « Get Ready ». Mais loin de là l’idée de faire des morceaux assez sombres. « Superstar » est très joyeux dans ses sonorités, et on se voit déjà en train de danser au rythme spectaculaire de la batterie. On est ici face à une réelle démonstration de force et d’endurance. Pour « Lézard Rouge », la guitare est au coeur de la composition, et on se laisse transporter dans cet univers assez shoegaze ambiant. L’exploration des genres continue avec « Harder Than Rain », qui nous fait penser à certains titres de Jamie XX, où l’on croirait même entendre des cuivres. Ce titre est particulier car il mixe l’eléctronique à des notes très longues et étouffé comme on pourrait le retrouver dans certains titres doom stoner.
Mais retour à l’aspect très jazzy avec « Pepe Pepe » où les alarmes sonnent pour rendre l’électro très rock. « Lo4 » quant à lui est un titre aux sons non identifié, entre kraut rock et musique orientale. En suspension entre un désert aride et dans l’espace, l’expérience live de ce titre promets d’être marquante. Pas question de vous endormir avec les 3 derniers titres, et le fameux « Alright, Goodnight » où les musiciens font s’entrechoquer les rythmes à tout va, parfois même assez tribal, comme un cérémonie religieuse paienne.
Tom Brooke et Tuomas Kainulainen nous régalent avec ce nouvel album, continuant de s’implanter dans ces groupes « pépites » que l’on adore, aussi bien en album qu’en live. On ressent dans leur musique une réelle passion pour le son, en tout genre, et donne une définition au mot « diversité » dans la musique. Un grand bravo !

Almost two years to the day after the release of Waterfall Cave Fantasy, Forever, which we highly recommended, the British-Finnish duo Nyos is back on October 10 with Growl, their new album, again on Pelagic Records. This album, described as experimental post-rock, pushes the boundaries of free jazz and math rock previously established to make this musical project a unique and exciting band.
This new album from Nyos is thrilling! With the desire to mix all their inspirations even more deeply, the band takes us on a whirlwind tour of free jazz, as usual, with superb post-metal moments, starting with the first track, “Get Ready.” But far from the idea of making dark songs. “Superstar” is very joyful in its sound, and we can already see ourselves dancing to the spectacular rhythm of the drums. Here we are faced with a real demonstration of strength and endurance. For “Lézard Rouge,” the guitar is at the heart of the composition, and we let ourselves be transported into this rather ambient shoegaze universe. The exploration of genres continues with “Harder Than Rain,” which reminds us of certain tracks by Jamie XX, where we even think we can hear brass instruments. This track is unique because it mixes electronic music with very long, muffled notes, as found in certain doom stoner tracks.
But we return to a very jazzy feel with “Pepe Pepe,” where alarms sound to give the electro a very rock feel. “Lo4” is a track with unidentified sounds, somewhere between kraut rock and oriental music. Suspended between an arid desert and outer space, the live experience of this track promises to be memorable. There’s no chance of falling asleep with the last three tracks, including the famous “Alright, Goodnight,” where the musicians clash rhythms at full throttle, sometimes even quite tribally, like a pagan religious ceremony.
Tom Brooke and Tuomas Kainulainen delight us with this new album, continuing to establish themselves among those “gems” of bands that we love, both on album and live. Their music conveys a real passion for sound, of all kinds, and gives meaning to the word “diversity” in music. Well done!
