Le vendredi 10 du mois était pour beaucoup LA soirée que beaucoup attendaient. En effet, après une super programmation de cette rentrée 2025, Le Grand Mix nous a offert la belle surprise d’accueillir pour notre plus grand plaisir les reines du modern Rap Rock actuelles, Nova Twins, accompagnées des déjantées HotWax. Une soirée spéciale Rock Anglais version groovy et décapé pour un max de pogo en évitant les nez cassés.

Cette nouvelle soirée au Grand Mix commence doucement mais sûrement avec un public plus qu’impatient qui attendait sagement dans les premiers rangs, collé à la scène pour ne pas perdre une miette de cette superbe soirée qui allait avoir lieu. HotWax est un trio venu de Brighton et qui s’est formé en 2020. On était tous et toutes pressé d’entendre ce que Tallulah Sim-Savage (vocaux, guitare), Lola Sam (backing vocaux, basse) et Alfie Sayers (batterie) avaient à nous offrir. A peine les premières notes entamées que les têtes du public ne pouvaient s’empêcher de bouger, doucement mais sûrement sur le son piquant avec lequel elles commençaient à nous envouter. Car impossible de rester statique et figé sur place tant l’énergie que HotWax dégageaient venait nous chatouiller jusqu’à nous faire bouger tel des petites marionnettes, comme si c’était elles qui tenaient les ficelles, prêtes à nous envoyer nous faire électriser sur leurs riffs accrocheurs, leurs rythmiques énervées et dynamiques. Avec HotWax, on est pile dans la veine entre Rock Alternatif, Garage Punk, Grunge et Indie Rock, un savant mélange des genres tout en gardant leurs racines Rock, le tout avec une grosse vibe venue tout droit des 90’s qui a de suite plu aux fans du genre. On avait juste à fermer les yeux et on se croirait revenu dans cette période symbolique de l’âge d’or du Grunge et autres petites perles du genre, avec ces mélodies accrocheuses et cette tonalité vocale suave et rocailleuse qui a marqué beaucoup d’entre nous durant nos jeunes années. En enchaînant leur set, HotWax ont rapidement su conquérir leur public grâce à leurs morceaux pêchus, avec une belle touche qui peut rappeler par moment certains morceaux de Hole et autres groupes de Grunge féminins, grâce à la voix piquante et acidulée de Tallulah Sim-Savage appuyée par les backing vocaux de Lola Sam. C’était aussi sans parler de la présence scénique des trois membres du groupes, et notamment du duo qui se jouait littéralement entre Tallulah Sim-Savage et Lola Sam, occupant l’espace au maximum et venant jusqu’à se chercher l’une et l’autre dans un rapport frontal grâce à une chorégraphie inconsciente, animale et envoûtante. Avec un premier single Stay Cool / What’s That Sound? (paru en 2020), deux EP’s A Thousand Times (paru en 2023 chez Marathon Artists), Invite Me Kindly (aussi paru en 2023) ainsi que leur tout premier album studio Hot Shock (paru en 2025 toujours chez Marathon Artists), HotWax aura assuré une parfaite première partie en nous offrant un live rapide vif et efficace de trente minutes nous donnant en l’espace d’un moment, la sensation d’un retour dans le passé, en plein dans les 90’s, bardé de distorsions à gogo, de fun, d’attitude, et de cheveux colorés.
Le phénomène Nova Twins s’est formé en 2014 et débarque tout droit de Londres pour nous livrer un show exceptionnel pour tous les mordus de Rap Rock, Rock Industriel, Nu Metal et Rock Alternatif. C’est avec ce savant mélange que le groupe à très rapidement su s’imposer comme fer de lance du style dans la scène actuelle, avec leur mixité des genres servie sur un plateau d’argent. Et c’est justement cette combinaison couplée aux petits oignons qui en fait toute leur identité musicale, et qui plait tant à une certaine frange avide de mixité sonore, tant leur musique est riche et diversifiée au niveau des différentes influences que propose Nova Twins. Mené par Amy Love (chant, guitare) et Georgia South (basse, backing vocals), leur public n’a qu’à bien se tenir car forcément, leur show allait envoyer du lourd. En espérant juste que les novices du genre avaient pensé à se préparer car cet ovni musical n’allait forcément pas les laisser de marbre. Avec Nova Twins, on à l’impression d’être embarqué à bord d’une fusée se déplaçant à la vitesse de la lumière pour nous balancer une pluie d’étoiles dans les yeux, et de constellations dans les oreilles, tellement cette comète musicale frise avec le spatial. Car niveau ambiances et atmosphères, elles ne sont pas les dernières à nous offrir une complexité sonore à toute épreuve, tant dans leurs morceaux que dans leur chorégraphies. Entre passages Rap Rock posés sur une basse groovy avec une sacrée base d’électro flirtant sur des sonorités funky, rappelant même certaines tonalités de Dubstep et de Drum and Bass, des touches de Rock Industriel plus structurés, du Nu Metal dans toute son énergie, et du Rock Alternatif beaucoup plus posé, on en ressort forcément étonnamment surpris et ravi pour tous les mordus de ce joyeux mélange auditif. Et le tout est savamment bien ficelé. Sans oublier les enchaînements vocaux d’Amy Love, passant aisément avec la plus grande facilité, entre vocaux poussés sans jamais être criés, mais toujours puissamment efficaces, à des mélodies beaucoup plus pop et chantées, touchant presque aux racines du R&B. Une mixture liée à un sacré panache, qui donne toute l’essence et le caractère même de leur musique. Et forcément, le public du Grand Mix ne pouvait pas rester de marbre face à un tel déferlement de style, car c’était juste totalement impossible de ne pas réussir à bouger en restant planté là sur place. Les premiers pogos ont vite commencé à se former pour finir par emporter la première moitié du public dans un tourbillon de gestes, de sauts, et de mouvements plus fous les uns que les autres. Et ce même jusqu’à nous entraîner dans quelques braveheart, ou à accroupir la foule en délire, jusqu’à l’explosion des sens. Sans oublier le petit passage éclair d’Amy Love et Georgia South lorsqu’elles nous ont fait l’honneur de descendre dans le public pour nous régaler de leur show haut en couleur. Après une belle quantité de singles, quelques EP’s, et trois albums studio, Who Are The Girls? (paru en 2020 chez 333 Wreckords Crew), Supernova (paru en 2022 chez Marshall Records) et le tout dernier en date Parasites & Butterflies (paru cette année toujours chez Marshall Records), Nova Twins nous aura fait l’honneur de nous jouer un live magique, original et hors du commun d’une heure, pour nous offrir un moment hors du temps, voir hors de notre système solaire tellement elles nous ont envoyé loin de la terre pour nous mettre la tête à l’envers.

Friday October 10th was THE night that many had been waiting for. After a fantastic line-up for the start of the 2025 season, Le Grand Mix treated us to a wonderful surprise by welcoming the queens of modern rap rock, Nova Twins, accompanied by the crazy HotWax. It was a special evening of groovy, raw British rock, perfect for maximum moshing without breaking any noses.

This new evening at Le Grand Mix began slowly but surely, with an eager audience waiting patiently in the front rows, glued to the stage so as not to miss a moment of the superb evening that was about to unfold. HotWax is a trio from Brighton that formed in 2020. We were all eager to hear what Tallulah Sim-Savage (vocals, guitar), Lola Sam (backing vocals, bass) and Alfie Sayers (drums) had to offer. As soon as the first notes began, the audience couldn’t help but move their heads, slowly but surely, to the spicy sound with which they began to captivate us. It was impossible to stay still and frozen in place, as the energy that HotWax exuded tickled us until we moved like little puppets, as if they were the ones pulling the strings, ready to send us into a frenzy with their catchy riffs and energetic, dynamic rhythms. With HotWax, we’re right in the vein of Alternative Rock, Garage Punk, Grunge and Indie Rock, a clever mix of genres while keeping their Rock roots, all with a big vibe straight out of the 90s that immediately appealed to fans of the genre. We just had to close our eyes and we felt like we were back in that symbolic period of the golden age of grunge and other gems of the genre, with those catchy melodies and that smooth, gravelly vocal tone that left its mark on many of us during our younger years. As they played through their set, HotWax quickly won over their audience with their energetic songs, with a nice touch that at times recalled certain songs by Hole and other female grunge bands, thanks to the sharp and tangy voice of Tallulah Sim-Savage supported by the backing vocals of Lola Sam. Not to mention the stage presence of the three band members, particularly the duo formed by Tallulah Sim-Savage and Lola Sam, who took up the entire space and even sought each other out in a frontal relationship thanks to their unconscious, animalistic and mesmerising choreography. With their first single « Stay Cool / What’s That Sound? » (released in 2020), two EPs A Thousand Times (released in 2023 by Marathon Artists) and Invite Me Kindly (also released in 2023), as well as their very first studio album Hot Shock (released in 2025, again by Marathon Artists), HotWax provided the perfect opening act, offering a fast-paced, lively and effective thirty-minute live performance that instantly transported us back to the 90s, complete with distortion galore, fun, attitude and colourful hair.
The Nova Twins phenomenon formed in 2014 and hails straight from London to deliver an exceptional show for all fans of rap rock, industrial rock, nu metal and alternative rock. With this clever mix, the band quickly established itself as the spearhead of the style in the current scene, with their blend of genres served up on a silver platter. It is precisely this carefully crafted combination that defines their musical identity and appeals to a certain fringe audience eager for sonic diversity, as their music is rich and diverse in terms of the different influences offered by Nova Twins. Led by Amy Love (vocals, guitar) and Georgia South (bass, backing vocals), their audience had better brace themselves because their show was bound to be a blast. Let’s just hope that those new to the genre had prepared themselves, because this musical UFO was bound to leave a lasting impression. With Nova Twins, you feel like you’re aboard a rocket travelling at the speed of light, showering your eyes with stars and your ears with constellations, so much so that this musical comet borders on the cosmic. In terms of mood and atmosphere, they are not the last to offer us unfailing sonic complexity, both in their songs and in their choreography. Between rap rock passages laid over a groovy bass line with a powerful electro base flirting with funky sounds, even reminiscent of certain dubstep and drum and bass tones, touches of more structured industrial rock, nu metal in all its energy, and much more laid-back alternative rock, fans of this joyful auditory mix are bound to be pleasantly surprised and delighted. And it’s all skilfully put together. Not to mention Amy Love‘s vocal transitions, moving with ease between powerful vocals that are never shouted but always effective, and much more pop-oriented, sung melodies that almost touch on the roots of R&B. It’s a mixture linked by a hell of a lot of panache, which gives their music its very essence and character. And inevitably, the audience at Le Grand Mix couldn’t remain unmoved by such an outpouring of style, because it was simply impossible not to move while standing there. The first mosh pits quickly began to form, eventually sweeping the first half of the audience into a whirlwind of gestures, jumps and movements, each crazier than the last. This even led to a few braveheart moments, or the frenzied crowd crouching down until their senses exploded. Not to mention the brief appearance of Amy Love and Georgia South, who honoured us by coming down into the audience to treat us to their colourful show. After a good number of singles, a few EPs, and three studio albums, Who Are The Girls? (released in 2020 on 333 Wreckords Crew), Supernova (released in 2022 on Marshall Records) and the latest Parasites & Butterflies (released this year, again on Marshall Records), Nova Twins did us the honour of playing a magical, original and extraordinary hour-long live set, offering us a moment out of time, even out of our solar system, as they sent us far away from Earth and turned our heads upside down.
