Computers Kill People prennent le temps entre deux sorties, mais une arrivée d’un nouveau disque est toujours un évènement. Cinq ans après l’EP Destruction Derby, le groupe parisien nous propose de découvrir son deuxième album studio. Intitulé The Storyteller, il sera disponible dès le 17 octobre via Kernel Panic Records. Autant vous dire qu’on avait hâte de découvrir ce disque depuis son annonce et que les premiers singles nous ont mis l’eau à la bouche!

Pour ouvrir cet album, le groupe nous propose de partir redécouvrir le morceau « Sunset Kiss », déjà présent sur leur EP Healing Bruises de 2018. Evidemment le titre est retravaillé totalement et nous livre de nouvelles sensations. Yome Venice chante avec énergie et une voix aérienne, l’inverse total de son jeu de guitare qui respire l’envie de tout retourner! Autant dire que le côté stoner rock du trio n’a jamais sonné aussi massif! La force de la formation réside dans le fait que trois des membres chantent, car oui pour la première fois sur ce disque Karin Gousset nous livre ses vocalises en nous enchantant totalement sur « The End » et « Lockdown Blues » en deuxième partie d’album. Tout au long du disque c’est Yome Venice et Loïc Wiels, également guitariste qui se partagent le chant. Et évidemment le tout est magnifié par le jeu de batterie énergique et versatile de Erwan Colin.
Avec ce disque le groupe n’hésite pas à nous proposer des inédits d’une force impressionnante comme « Last Man Standing » ou encore « Good Guy With A Gun » où les guitares, la basse et la batterie fusent dans un son entre stoner et power rock du plus bel effet. L’autre morceau qui a le droit à un lifting est « Only The Dead » et comme pour le précédent on redécouvre un titre totalement retravaillé qui vient parfaitement coller à l’ambiance de cet album. D’ailleurs le nom de l’album colle parfaitement à cette ambiance. Pour le groupe le Storyteller représente aussi bien ce que sont devenus nos politiques que cette envie folle que l’on a tous à se plonger dans des histoires qui nous sortent d’un quotidien de plus en plus marqué par la dureté et la violence du monde qui nous entoure. L’autre surprise de l’album vient de la touche que le groupe vient apporter au mythique « Give It Away » des Red Hot Chili Peppers. Plus qu’une simple cover, cette nouvelle version vient nous montrer tout le talent du quatuor pour se l’approprier et y apposer un son qu’on sait être celui de la formation parisiennes.
En parlant de son, le mixage et le mastering de ce disque renforcent notre bonheur à l’écouter. Il faut dire que Etienne Sarthou (Karras) côté mix et Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna) côté mastering viennent ajouter leur talent respectif au service des morceaux pour une écoute toujours plus marquante. Les ambiances sont multiples tout au long du disque et nous montrent à quel point le combo a travaillé pour faire de cette aventure un véritable voyage sonore. Entre les morceaux teintés de stoner, ceux plus in your face comme « Good Guy With A Gun » ou ceux plus blues rock comme « The End », on trouve là toute l’étendue de ce que CKP peuvent proposer avec toujours cette force de composition qui nous impressionne d’année en années. Et lorsque l’excellent « TV Monsters » vient chatouiller nos oreilles, on n’a plus qu’une envie de relancer l’album au plus vite.
Avec The Storyteller, Computers Kill People nous livrent un disque qui satisfait pleinement nos attentes. L’envie d’évoluer est évidente mais on retrouve tout ce qui fait la force du groupe depuis sa création. Tout le travail abattu en fait un album à aller découvrir au plus vite autant pour sa richesse sonore que pour la qualité des compositions qui nous offrent de nouvelles émotions à chaque écoute. Encore une fois la scène française nous régale et on a hâte de voir le groupe débarquer près de chez nous.

Computers Kill People take their time between releases, but the arrival of a new album is always an event. Five years after the EP Destruction Derby, the Parisian band invites us to discover their second studio album. Entitled The Storyteller, it will be available on 17 October via Kernel Panic Records. Suffice to say that we have been eagerly awaiting this album since it was announced, and the first singles have whetted our appetite!
To open this album, the band invites us to rediscover the track ‘Sunset Kiss’, already featured on their 2018 EP Healing Bruises. Obviously, the track has been completely reworked and delivers new sensations. Yome Venice sings with energy and an ethereal voice, the complete opposite of her guitar playing, which exudes a desire to turn everything upside down! Suffice to say that the trio’s stoner rock side has never sounded so massive! The strength of the band lies in the fact that three of the members sing, because yes, for the first time on this record, Karin Gousset delivers her vocals, completely enchanting us on ‘The End’ and ‘Lockdown Blues’ in the second half of the album. Throughout the album, Yome Venice and Loïc Wiels, also a guitarist, share the vocals. And of course, the whole thing is magnified by Erwan Colin’s energetic and versatile drumming.
With this album, the band doesn’t hesitate to offer us impressive new tracks such as ‘Last Man Standing’ and ‘Good Guy With A Gun’, where the guitars, bass and drums explode in a sound somewhere between stoner and power rock to great effect. The other track that has been given a facelift is ‘Only The Dead’ and, as with the previous one, we rediscover a completely reworked track that fits perfectly with the atmosphere of this album. In fact, the name of the album fits this atmosphere perfectly. For the band, The Storyteller represents both what our politicians have become and the crazy desire we all have to immerse ourselves in stories that take us away from a daily life increasingly marked by the harshness and violence of the world around us. The other surprise on the album comes from the band’s touch on the legendary ‘Give It Away’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. More than just a cover, this new version shows us the quartet’s talent for making it their own and giving it a sound that we know to be that of the Parisian band.
Speaking of sound, the mixing and mastering of this record enhance our enjoyment of listening to it. It must be said that Etienne Sarthou (Karras) on the mixing side and Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna) on the mastering side add their respective talents to the service of the tracks for an ever more memorable listening experience. The atmospheres are varied throughout the album and show us how hard the band has worked to make this adventure a true sonic journey. Between the stoner-tinged tracks, the more in-your-face ones like ‘Good Guy With A Gun’ and the more blues rock ones like ‘The End’, we find the full range of what CKP has to offer, with the same compositional strength that has impressed us year after year. And when the excellent ‘TV Monsters’ tickles our ears, we can’t wait to play the album again as soon as possible.
With The Storyteller, Computers Kill People deliver an album that fully meets our expectations. The desire to evolve is evident, but we find everything that has made the band so strong since its creation. All the work that has gone into it makes this an album to be discovered as soon as possible, both for its rich sound and for the quality of the compositions, which offer us new emotions with each listen. Once again, the French scene has treated us well, and we can’t wait to see the band come to our neck of the woods.
