Pour clôturer ce week-end belge à Anvers, le dimanche 2 octobre, nous nous sommes rendus au Kavka Zappa pour un concert qui allait faire bouger et danser tout le monde. Thornhill est en tournée pour célébrer la sortie de son dernier album BODIES, accompagné de deux autres groupes australiens exceptionnels : Ocean Grove et Bloom. Difficile de résister à un tel programme !

Bloom a sorti son deuxième album le vendredi 31 octobre, le moment idéal pour les voir en concert. Nous avons eu le temps d’écouter l’album plusieurs fois avant de les découvrir sur scène, tout en continuant à apprécier leurs précédents travaux. Leur set de sept titres était un subtil mélange d’ancien et de nouveau, capturant l’essence même de ce que représente le groupe : des mélodies douces et touchantes mêlées à des riffs lourds et des breakdowns écrasants. Dès la première chanson, « Out Of Reach », l’énergie était au rendez-vous et le public n’est pas resté immobile une seule seconde, immédiatement captivé par ce que Bloom avait à offrir.
Après avoir tourné avec Silverstein plus tôt cette année, le groupe est clairement prêt à conquérir les scènes internationales. Ils ont joué des morceaux de leur nouvel album, The Light We Chase, mais ont également revisité Maybe In Another Life avec « Bound To Your Whispers » et « Cold », que Jono Hawkey a présenté en disant : « Êtes-vous prêts pour un peu d’emo ? », ce à quoi le public a répondu par des acclamations. Quand est venu le moment de jouer « You & I », le public a applaudi jusqu’à la fin, avant de se déchaîner complètement pendant « Withered », qui a gagné encore plus de puissance en live grâce aux cris du public reprenant les paroles. Bloom a terminé son set avec « Siren Song », tiré de son premier album, laissant les nouveaux venus totalement convaincus par ce que le quintette est capable d’offrir. Nous ne pouvons qu’espérer les voir bientôt en tête d’affiche d’une tournée européenne.
L’énergie n’a pas baissé, même un dimanche soir, car c’était au tour d’Ocean Grove. Leur son nu-metal et leur énergie contagieuse ont pris le dessus dès les premières notes de « CELL DIVISION ». Nous avions eu la chance de les voir en février lorsqu’ils avaient fait la première partie de The Devil Wears Prada au Trix, mais cette fois-ci, leur set était plus long, ce qui signifiait plus de morceaux tirés de ODDWORLD. Impossible de ne pas chanter en chœur des morceaux comme « MY DISASTER » ou « LAST DANCE », où Dale Tanner a rappelé à tout le monde de dire à ceux qu’ils aiment qu’ils les aiment, demandant au public d’illuminer la salle avec leurs lampes de poche. Ce fut un moment doux et sincère avant que l’énergie n’explose à nouveau sur « RAINDROP », lorsque Dale Tanner a pris la basse et Brent Hunter le micro pour lancer un circle pit. Plus tard, le chanteur a plaisanté en disant que le public était formidable pour un dimanche soir, mais il en a demandé encore plus : « I want an 11/10 Sunday », avant de se lancer dans « SUNNY », suivi de « FLY AWAY », avec le public chantant avec enthousiasme le refrain. Avant de terminer leur set avec « JUNKIE$ », le groupe nous a rappelé qu’il serait de retour en Europe en mars, en première partie de la tournée de Poppy. Ils ont terminé en beauté avec un autre mosh pit et Dale Tanner qui s’est joint au chaos. Ocean Grove s’améliore définitivement à chaque fois que nous les voyons.
Enfin, Thornhill est monté sur scène pour clôturer notre soirée, et notre week-end, avec un morceau qui équilibre parfaitement leur son heavy, l’émotion et la mélodie : « DIESEL », suivi des riffs explosifs de « Revolver ». Sorti en avril, BODIES était clairement destiné à être vécu en live, et la performance de ce soir n’a pas déçu. Une semaine avant la sortie de BODIES X (une version remixée et réinventée de l’album), l’inclusion de leur dernier single « Mercia » était essentielle. Le morceau a commencé lentement, la voix langoureuse de Jacob Charlton nous transportant doucement tout au long de la chanson avant que le tempo ne s’accélère et qu’un pogo ne s’ouvre, les crowdsurfers volant au-dessus de la foule.
Le groupe enchaîne ensuite avec « Lily and The Moon », un véritable tube qui invite tout le monde à chanter en chœur, suivi de « Where We Go When We Die », également tiré de leur album The Dark Pool. Jacob ajoute ensuite sa guitare pour « Only Ever You », avant de plonger ailleurs dans leur discographie avec « Arkangel » et « Blue Velvet » tirés de Heroine. Il n’y a pas eu beaucoup de discussions entre les chansons, mais Jacob souriait facilement, tirant les crowdsurfers sur scène chaque fois qu’ils l’atteignaient. Au moment de jouer « For Now », il a prévenu que c’était « une chanson triste » et a demandé à tout le monde d’illuminer à nouveau la salle. Un peu plus tard, il a tenu à mentionner que c’était l’anniversaire de Nick Sjogren avant de clôturer la soirée avec leurs morceaux les plus heavy : « TONGUES », « Obsession » et « nerv ». Pour cette dernière, Jacob a demandé à tout le monde de s’accroupir, afin de sauter encore plus haut lorsque le drop arriverait. BODIES prend une nouvelle dimension dans sa version live, l’énergie du groupe et celle du public se mélangeant jusqu’à devenir quelque chose d’électrique.
Alors que les lumières s’éteignaient et que les échos s’estompaient, cela semblait être la conclusion parfaite d’un week-end rempli d’émotion, de sueur et d’unité. Trois groupes australiens, une nuit belge et un public énergique à souhait. Le mélange entre le hardcore mélodique de Bloom, le nu-metal d’Ocean Grove et l’alt metal de Thornhill a parfaitement fonctionné, nous permettant de profiter d’un peu de tout au cours de la soirée.

To end this Belgian weekend in Antwerp on Sunday, October 2nd, we headed to Kavka Zappa for a line-up that would make anyone move and bounce. Thornhill is on tour celebrating the release of their latest work BODIES, accompanied by two other standout Australian bands: Ocean Grove and Bloom. Hard to resist this kind of line-up!

Bloom released their sophomore album on Friday October 31st, the perfect timing to catch them live. We had time to spin the record a few times before discovering them on stage while still enjoying their earlier work. Their seven-track set was a subtle mix between old and new, capturing the essence of what the band stands for: soft, touching melodies blended with heavy riffs and crushing breakdowns. From the first song, “Out Of Reach,” the energy was high, and the crowd didn’t stay still for a second, immediately tuned in to what Bloom had to offer.
After touring with Silverstein earlier this year, the band is clearly ready to take over the international stages. They played songs from their new release, The Light We Chase, but also revisited Maybe In Another Life with “Bound To Your Whispers” and “Cold,” which Jono Hawkey introduced with, “Are you ready for some emo shit?”, to which the crowd answered with cheers. When the time came for “You & I,” people clapped along until the end, before completely letting go during “Withered,” which gained even more power live as the audience screamed the lyrics back at them. Bloom closed their set with “Siren Song” from their debut album, leaving newcomers totally convinced by what the quintet can deliver. We can only hope to see them headline a European tour soon.
The energy didn’t drop, even on a Sunday night, because it was time for Ocean Grove. Their nu-metal sound and contagious energy took over from the first notes of “CELL DIVISION.” We had the chance to see them back in February when they opened for The Devil Wears Prada at Trix, but this time they had a longer set, which meant more tracks from ODDWORLD. It’s impossible not to sing along to songs like “MY DISASTER” or “LAST DANCE,” where Dale Tanner reminded everyone to tell the people they love that they do, asking the crowd to light up the room with their flashlights. That was the soft, heartfelt moment before the energy exploded again on “RAINDROP,” when Dale Tanner took the bass and Brent Hunter grabbed the mic to launch a circle pit. Later, the singer joked that the crowd was doing great for a Sunday night but demanded even more, “I want an 11/10 Sunday”, before launching into “SUNNY,” followed by “FLY AWAY,” with the audience singing eagerly along to the chorus. Before closing their set with “JUNKIE$,” the band reminded us they’d be back in Europe in March, opening for Poppy’s tour. They ended on a high note with another mosh pit and Dale Tanner jumping in to join the chaos. Ocean Grove definitely gets better and better every time we see them.
Finally, Thornhill took the stage to close our evening, and our weekend, with a track that perfectly balances their heavy sound, emotion, and melody: “DIESEL,” followed by the explosive riffs of “Revolver.” Released back in April, BODIES was clearly meant to be experienced live, and tonight’s performance did not disappoint. A week before the release of BODIES X (a remixed and reimagined version of the album), the inclusion of their latest single “Mercia” was essential. It started slow, Jacob Charlton’s languid voice carrying us gently through the song before the tempo rose and a pit opened up, crowdsurfers flying over the people.
The band then moved into “Lily and The Moon,” a true banger that invited everyone to sing along, followed by “Where We Go When We Die” also from their record The Dark Pool. Jacob then added his guitar for “Only Ever You,” before diving elsewhere into their discography with “Arkangel” and “Blue Velvet” from Heroine. There wasn’t much talking between songs, but Jacob smiled easily, pulling up crowdsurfers onto the stage whenever they reached it. When it was time for “For Now,” he warned that it was “a sad one” and asked everyone to light up the room again. A little later, he made sure to mention it was Nick Sjogren’s birthday before closing the night with their heaviest tracks: “TONGUES,” “Obsession,” and “nerv.” For the last one, Jacob asked everyone to crouch down, just to jump even higher when the drop hit. BODIES takes on a new life in its live version, the energy of the band and the crowd blending together until it becomes something electric.
As the lights dimmed and the echoes faded, it felt like the perfect conclusion to a weekend filled with emotion, sweat, and unity. Three Australian bands, one Belgian night, and a crowd that refused to slow down. The mix of Bloom’s melodic hardcore, Ocean Grove’s nu-metal and Thornhill’s alt metal totally worked together, allowing us to get a little bit of everything during the evening.
