Le Bar Du Singe Savant accueille en ce samedi 8 novembre une légende du punk rock US à savoir Dennis Jagard de Ten Foot Pole. Bien connu des lillois pour son concert d’anthologie devant Le Distrot en pleine Braderie de Lille il y a un peu plus d’un an, le voilà de retour pour un nouveau concert acoustique dont il a le secret. Pour l’accompagner c’est le musicien et chanteur Dull Boy qui ouvre cette soirée. Cette belle soirée au son des guitares nous était proposée par Coal Strike Booking.

Chaque concert au Bar Du Singe nous fait découvrir une nouvelle configuration de la salle, et ce soir ça sera en places assises en cercle autour des deux musiciens à l’affiche ce soir. C’est donc Dull Boy qui démarre, et on est vite surpris de voir débarquer Titouan, qu’on connaît bien pour ses projets Bare Teeth ou November, à la guitare et au chant. Ici c’est en solo qu’il s’exprime avec un univers très marqué par les Etats Unis et la musique country jusque dans le style vestimentaire. Le musicien se livre et nous fait découvrir des compositions bien loin des sonorités auxquelles il nous a habitué avec ses autres projets. Malheureusement on a un peu de mal à rentrer dans le set, possiblement à cause des faussetés dans le chant qui nous sortent un peu des compositions, qui musicalement sont bien travaillés et fidèles à cet univers américain. On laisse le public profiter du set et on en profite pour se resservir une des excellentes bières brassées par le bar.
On enchaine rapidement avec Dennis Jagard, prêt à nous dévoiler le meilleur de la discographie de son groupe Ten Foot Pole en version acoustique. D’entrée le musicien californien montre tout son talent avec un jeu de guitare énergique et un chant qui nous enchante dès les premières secondes. Les refrains font mouche et sont vites repris par un public aux anges de voir des morceaux cultes interprétés avec autant de brio par Dennis. Entre chaque titre une anecdote sur le groupe, la création du titre ou la vie de son interprète vient renforcer la proximité évidente entre l’artiste et son public. Quel bonheur de se prendre « Plastic », « Sunny Days » ou encore « Eveything Dies » et son refrain iconique à reprendre en chœur dans les oreilles. On sent un véritable esprit de camaraderie ce soir, esprit qui colle parfaitement au skate punk, style de prédilection de la formation américaine. On sent que Dennis se sent bien chez nous et le public le lui rend bien en chantant avec lui et en participant à ses intertitres tous plus passionnants, drôles et/ou émouvants les uns que les autres. On navigue dans la belle carrière du groupe avec d’autres pépites comme « Don’t Be A Dick » ou « Scars » qui mettent tout le monde d’accord. Dennis remercie à plusieurs reprises le public, le bar et l’orga ainsi que son fidèle ami québécois qui l’accompagne pour cette tournée. On sent que le couvre-feu sonore du bar l’inquiète un peu mais il ne se démonte pas et nous propose encore quelques morceaux des plus efficaces une fois de plus. Les propriétaires lui font signe que son set acoustique peut durer un peu plus, ce qui ravit le public présent ce soir. C’est donc parti pour quelques titres supplémentaires qui se terminent sur le superbe « It’s Always Been You » qui laisse à tout le monde l’occasion de reprendre le refrain en choeur une dernière fois. C’est largement applaudi que Dennis Jagard termine son set avant de partir discuter plus longuement avec le public présent ce soir et visiblement ravi, tout comme nous, par cette prestation de haute volée du musicien américain.
On ne peut que remercier Coal Strike Booking pour cette soirée qui nous a permis de redécouvrir la discographie de Ten Foot Pole sous un nouveau jour. Dennis Jagard fidèle à sa réputation a livré une prestation humaine, impressionnante de maîtrise et surtout pleine de tubes devant un public des plus enjoués. Un samedi soir comme on les adore! On remercie également le Bar Du Singe Savant de permettre la tenue de ces concerts et d’accueillir tout le monde dans un cadre si chaleureux.

Well known to Lille residents for his legendary concert in front of Le Distrot during the Lille Braderie just over a year ago, he is back for another acoustic concert, which he does so well. Every concert at Bar Du Singe reveals a new layout for the venue, and tonight it will be seated in a circle around the two musicians performing. Dull Boy kicks things off, and we are quickly surprised to see Titouan, well known for his projects Bare Teeth and November, arrive on guitar and vocals. Here he performs solo, expressing a style heavily influenced by the United States and country music, right down to his clothing. The musician opens up and introduces us to compositions that are a far cry from the sounds we are used to hearing in his other projects. Unfortunately, we find it a little difficult to get into the set, possibly because of the false notes in the vocals, which take us out of the compositions a little, which are musically well crafted and faithful to this American universe. We let the audience enjoy the set and take the opportunity to help ourselves to another of the excellent beers brewed by the bar.
We quickly move on to Dennis Jagard, ready to reveal the best of his band Ten Foot Pole‘s discography in acoustic version. From the outset, the Californian musician shows off his talent with energetic guitar playing and vocals that enchant us from the very first seconds. The choruses hit the mark and are quickly taken up by an audience delighted to hear cult songs performed with such brio by Dennis. Between each song, an anecdote about the band, the creation of the song or the life of its performer reinforces the obvious closeness between the artist and his audience. What a joy to hear ‘Plastic’, ‘Sunny Days’ and ‘Everything Dies’ with its iconic chorus to sing along to. There is a real spirit of camaraderie tonight, a spirit that fits perfectly with skate punk, the American band’s favourite style. You can tell that Dennis feels at home here, and the audience returns the favour by singing along with him and participating in his interludes, each one more exciting, funny and/or moving than the last. We navigate the band’s impressive career with other gems such as ‘Don’t Be A Dick’ and ‘Scars’, which everyone agrees on. Dennis repeatedly thanks the audience, the bar and the organisers, as well as his loyal Quebecois friend who is accompanying him on this tour. You can sense that the bar’s noise curfew is worrying him a little, but he doesn’t let it get to him and once again treats us to a few more of his most effective songs. The owners signal to him that his acoustic set can go on a little longer, much to the delight of the audience present tonight. So off we go for a few more songs, ending with the superb ‘It’s Always Been You’, which gives everyone the opportunity to sing along to the chorus one last time. Dennis Jagard finishes his set to loud applause before leaving to chat at length with the audience, who are clearly delighted, just like us, by this high-quality performance from the American musician.
We can only thank Coal Strike Booking for this evening, which allowed us to rediscover Ten Foot Pole‘s discography in a new light. True to his reputation, Dennis Jagard delivered a human performance, impressive in its mastery and, above all, full of hits in front of a very enthusiastic audience. A Saturday night just the way we like it! We would also like to thank the Bar Du Singe Savant for hosting these concerts and welcoming everyone in such a warm atmosphere.
