Bien que la ville de Göteborg en Suède ait donné naissance à bon nombre de groupes renommés de Death Metal Mélodique, Rome en Italie a vu naître de son côté 5RAND, un combo du même genre sur le point de dévoiler, le 28 novembre, son projet le plus ambitieux à ce jour : un troisième album intitulé Ordhalia via Art Gates Records.

C’est en 2015 que naît 5RAND, une formation dont le nom provient d’une pièce de 5 rands sud-africains offerte par un chaman, symbolisant non seulement les chemins inattendus mais aussi les expériences transformatrices d’une vie. Ces thèmes se retrouvent tout au long de leurs deux premiers albums, Sacred/Scared (2017) et Dark Mother (2019). Explorant la dualité entre fureur et introspection, ce troisième disque, Ordhalia, apparaît sur le papier comme leur œuvre la plus aboutie, masterisée par l’incontournable Jens Bogren (Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Opeth, Sepultura…).
Comme à son habitude, le groupe débute par une introduction, « Lullaby for the Broken », afin de nous immerger progressivement dans son univers. On entre ensuite rapidement dans le vif du sujet avec « Bloodlife », un morceau rapide et agressif porté par un riff infernal et une batterie inarrêtable. L’impressionnante voix gutturale de la chanteuse Julia Elenoir résonne tandis que les musiciens donnent tout ce qu’ils ont. Au milieu de cette déferlante, le guitariste Pierluigi Carocci nous gratifie d’un superbe solo dans le dernier tiers du titre. Une entrée en matière brutale qui capture l’essence même du quatuor ! En termes d’agressivité pure, « Turbid » se place également haut dans le classement. Intrépide et efficace, cette chanson possède un côté groovy irrésistible incitant immédiatement au headbang, tandis que le chant clair de Julia apporte une touche mélodique bienvenue sur le final. Sans doute l’un des titres phares !
En parlant de mélodie, le morceau éponyme « Ordhalia » accentue cette dimension en variant les tempos et les tessitures vocales, oscillant entre chant clair et saturé. Un mélange que l’on pourrait qualifier d’à la fois enchanteur et brutal. Le combo insiste encore davantage sur cet aspect avec « Double Blind ». Avec son tempo lent, on peut aisément qualifier ce titre de « ballade sombre ». La voix finale, digne d’une sorcière, renforce l’atmosphère sombre du titre, le refermant sur une touche angoissante.
Gage du sérieux de la formation, 5RAND a fait appel au chanteur du légendaire Fear Factory, Milo Silvestro, pour les accompagner sur « The Nihilist ». L’alchimie est indéniable : le duo Milo et Julia se complète à merveille sur ce morceau aux influences de metal industriel, magnifié par une instrumentation aux petits oignons.
Le quatuor italien varie les plaisirs, notamment avec « Lethargy », un titre résolument groovy au rythme saccadé, ponctué par un beau solo de guitare. On retrouve ici encore cette alternance vocale maîtrisée avec quelques envolées lyriques de Julia. « Ritual of Silence » s’inscrit dans la même veine, même si on lui préférera l’efficacité diabolique de « Lethargy ».
Afin de clore ce nouveau chapitre en beauté, 5RAND nous offre « Resurge in Death » et « Silent Line », deux chansons sublimées une nouvelle fois par la qualité d’exécution de Pierluigi, Acey et Andrea. Rien à redire non plus sur la prestation de la vocaliste qui navigue avec aisance entre les registres. « Resurge in Death » se termine sur une session purement groove, tandis que « Silent Line » s’achève sur un moment de calme avec la voix enchanteresse de Julia, refermant ainsi l’album.
Avec Ordhalia, nous assistons à une belle démonstration de melodic death metal orchestrée par quatre artistes talentueux. Si on entend clairement les influences de piliers comme Dark Tranquillity et Arch Enemy, le groupe parvient à digérer ces influences pour forger une identité moderne et propre à elle. Fort de la présence de Milo Silvestro et d’une production en béton, le quatuor réaffirme sa crédibilité et monte d’un cran. C’est leur meilleur disque à ce jour, celui qui leur permettra certainement d’ouvrir de nouvelles portes !

5RAND was formed in 2015, taking its name from a South African 5 rand coin given to them by a shaman, symbolizing not only unexpected paths but also life-changing experiences. These themes are found throughout their first two albums, Sacred/Scared (2017) and Dark Mother (2019). Exploring the duality between fury and introspection, this third album, Ordhalia, appears on paper to be their most accomplished work, mastered by the renowned Jens Bogren (Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Opeth, Sepultura…).
As usual, the band starts with an intro, “Lullaby for the Broken,” to gradually immerse us in their world. We then quickly get to the heart of the matter with “Bloodlife,” a fast and aggressive track driven by a hellish riff and unstoppable drums. Singer Julia Elenoir‘s impressive guttural voice resonates as the musicians give it their all. In the midst of this onslaught, guitarist Pierluigi Carocci treats us to a superb solo in the last third of the track. It’s a brutal introduction that captures the very essence of the quartet! In terms of pure aggression, “Turbid” also ranks high. Fearless and effective, this song has an irresistible groovy side that immediately incites headbanging, while Julia‘s clear vocals bring a welcome melodic touch to the finale. Undoubtedly one of the standout tracks!
Speaking of melody, the eponymous track “Ordhalia” accentuates this dimension by varying the tempos and vocal ranges, oscillating between clean and saturated vocals. It’s a mix that could be described as both enchanting and brutal. The combo emphasizes this aspect even more with “Double Blind.” With its slow tempo, this track could easily be described as a “dark ballad.” The final voice, worthy of a witch, reinforces the dark atmosphere of the track, ending it on an anguished note.
As proof of the band’s seriousness, 5RAND called on Milo Silvestro, singer of the legendary Fear Factory, to accompany them on “The Nihilist.” The chemistry is undeniable: Milo and Julia complement each other perfectly on this industrial metal-influenced track, enhanced by meticulous instrumentation.
The Italian quartet varies the pleasures, notably with “Lethargy,” a resolutely groovy track with a staccato rhythm, punctuated by a beautiful guitar solo. Here again, we find the masterful vocal alternation with a few lyrical flights of fancy from Julia. “Ritual of Silence” is in the same vein, although we prefer the diabolical effectiveness of “Lethargy.”
To close this new chapter in style, 5RAND offers us “Resurge in Death” and “Silent Line,” two songs once again enhanced by the quality of Pierluigi, Acey, and Andrea‘s performance. There’s nothing to complain about either in terms of the vocalist’s performance, who navigates between registers with ease. “Resurge in Death” ends with a purely groovy session, while “Silent Line” ends on a calm note with Julia‘s enchanting voice, thus closing the album.
With Ordhalia, we witness a beautiful demonstration of melodic death metal orchestrated by four talented artists. While the influences of pillars such as Dark Tranquillity and Arch Enemy are clearly audible, the band manages to digest these influences to forge a modern identity all its own. Bolstered by the presence of Milo Silvestro and rock-solid production, the quartet reaffirms its credibility and takes it up a notch. This is their best album to date, one that will certainly open new doors for them!
