Dernière date pour organisée par Taste Of Mind, direction The Black Lab à Wasquehal ce 30 novembre où les Anglais de Guilt Trip ont posé leurs valises pour leur deuxième date dans le métropole Lilloise de l’année. Une soirée qui s’annonçait comme un sommet international du hardcore, réunissant trois autres groupes venus de trois continents différents : les Américains de Big Boy, les Thaïlandais de Whispers et les Parisiens de Calcine. Attention, boucherie en vue !

La foule est venue en nombre ce dimanche 30 novembre, remplissant quasi totalement le Black Lab avant même la première partie. S’inscrivant dans la nouvelle vague du hardcore français, le concert démarre donc avec nos compatriotes de Calcine et leur hardcore moderne. Sans attendre, le quatuor entame son set avec “Parasite” de leur album Common Love Common Nausea sorti l’année passée, tandis que le mosh pit prend immédiatement forme. Bien qu’il s’agisse du plus jeune groupe de la soirée, Calcine n’a rien à envier à quiconque tant leur musique et leur énergie communicative en imposent sur scène ! Pendant ce temps, de nombreuses têtes parmi le public se balancent sous l’efficacité et la lourdeur des chansons. Pas de temps mort, pas de répit, la chanteuse Stef et ses comparses enchaînent sans encombre les morceaux face à un public conquis. En l’espace de vingt minutes, Calcine s’avère particulièrement convaincant et, qui plus est, idéal pour chauffer la salle dès les premiers instants, lançant même un « siamo tutti antifascisti » à la basse, repris par le public. Le quatuor referme son set par le très bon “23:11”. Une sacrée entrée en matière !
On passe la seconde avec cette fois-ci un groupe thaï : Whispers. Adeptes du Evilcore (plus précisément du « Bangkok Evilcore » pour les intimes), le quintet débute en force avec “Retribution” (Yom-Ma-Lok, 2024) avec un son lourd, sombre et ravageur. Face à une telle rage, impossible de rester passif ! Le public suit le mouvement puisque les pogos redoublent d’intensité. Comme le précise le frontman Nitisart “Mike” Chaiburi, il s’agit de la première fois que le groupe joue à Lille. Avec le sourire qu’ils arborent, inutile de préciser qu’ils prennent du plaisir à être ici ! Plaisir partagé par l’audience qui, chauffée à blanc, n’en finit plus de secouer frénétiquement la tête. En dehors des pogos et du headbanging, certains n’hésitent pas non plus à monter sur scène et à sauter dans la foule pour s’adonner à une séance de crowdsurfing. Oui, l’intensité monte crescendo ! Leurs sons font mouche et certains morceaux sont terriblement ravageurs tel que “Morbid Vision” et sa fin dantesque. Pour conclure en apothéose, Whispers choisit d’interpréter “Ruining the Show”, une reprise de Kickback (légende du hardcore français, tiré de l’EP Les 150 Passions Meurtrières). Les Thaïs ont fait le show, c’est le moins qu’on puisse dire !
La troisième est enclenchée et arrive maintenant une formation qui nous vient tout droit des États-Unis. Porte-étendards du « Real Bay Shit », les membres de Big Boy débarquent sur les planches tout en lançant des “shout out” aux groupes et aux spectateurs présents ce soir au Black Lab. Dans la même veine, le chanteur Brandon Flores salue ensuite personnellement plusieurs personnes dans l’assemblée avant que ne commencent les choses sérieuses. À l’instar du combo précédent, il s’agit de la première fois dans la métropole lilloise pour Big Boy, l’occasion de démontrer en vingt minutes ce qu’ils savent faire. Alors que les premières notes de “Now?” (Love songs, 2025) retentissent, le public se métamorphose et devient complètement fou ! Quoi qu’on en dise, le style beatdown hardcore est parfait pour la bagarre avec ses rythmes saccadés, cette agressivité ambiante et cet univers plus « street ». Le mosh pit s’étend, les gens montent sur scène, prenant parfois même le micro, et sautent ensuite dans la marée humaine. Les Américains n’en reviennent pas : le Black Lab est déchaîné, ils ne s’attendaient pas à ça… Brandon en vient même à qualifier Lille de « nouvelle ville natale » ! À chaque son, que ce soit sur “Mistify” ou bien “Spades” (Spring Promo 2023), on assiste à un déferlement d’énergie, de mouvements chaotiques et de sueur de la part du public, et ce, sans faiblir une seule fois. Afin de finir en beauté, Big Boy interprète “A/X (Agony/Ecstasy)” (Winter promo 2021) et clôture ainsi un set monstrueux. Il est fort probable que ce ne soit pas la dernière fois que nous les voyons dans le coin !
Il est maintenant temps de passer la quatrième vitesse et d’accueillir la tête d’affiche Guilt Trip. Après avoir fait sensation au Zénith de Lille en mars en première partie de Architects, la formation britannique entend bien retourner le Black Lab. Le quintet lance les hostilités avec “Fallen at My Feet” et “Surrounded by Pain” (Severance, 2023). En une fraction de seconde, la fosse s’embrase. Ça saute, ça crie, ça se bouscule… Un concert de hardcore dans les règles de l’art ! Casquettes vissées sur le crâne, les anglais ne laissent aucun répit aux spectateurs, envoyant leur « Manchester Crossover » en pleine figure avec une précision chirurgicale. Le côté groovy de leurs sons, qui fait leur marque de fabrique, ainsi que les nombreux breakdowns sont dévastateurs notamment sur “Sweet Dreams” ou “Eyes Wide Shut”. Durant cinquante minutes, Guilt Trip parcourt sa discographie en nous proposant plusieurs morceaux issus de disques plus ou moins récents avec “Unrelenting Force” (Unrelenting Force, 2016) ou “Thin Ice” (River of Lies, 2019) par exemple. Mention spéciale à la nouvelle chanson “Burn” (2025) et également au titre inédit “Angel Eyes” qui font tous deux leur petit effet. Le mosh pit n’a jamais été aussi mouvementé que sur ce set, pour le plus grand plaisir de Jacob Valentine et de ses acolytes qui ne cachent pas non plus leur joie de finir cette tournée européenne devant un public aussi bouillant que celui-ci ! En mettant à l’épreuve les spectateurs de nombreuses fois, Guilt Trip entretient plus que jamais la flamme qui les relie. Une flamme entretenue une dernière fois ce soir avec “Davidian” issu du répertoire de Machine Head. Le coup de grâce idéal pour achever la fosse !
Au terme d’une performance maîtrisée de bout en bout, Guilt Trip a confirmé son statut de patron face à une audience enragée. Cependant, ils n’étaient pas seuls : de la violence brute de Big Boy aux ambiances sinistres de Whispers, en passant par la nervosité de Calcine, chaque groupe a ajouté sa pierre à l’édifice. Au final, nous en ressortons vidés mais heureux d’avoir assisté à une telle démonstration au Black Lab !
Un grand merci à Mimil pour les accréditations, et surtout un grand bravo pour ces années avec Taste of Mind. Vous avez fait vivre la scène hardcore pour placer le NDPC sur la carte ! The last date organized by Taste Of Mind was at The Black Lab in Wasquehal on November 30, where the English band Guilt Trip settled in for their second date in the Lille metropolitan area this year. The evening promised to be an international hardcore summit, bringing together three other bands from three different continents: Big Boy from the US, Whispers from Thailand, and Calcine from Paris. Warning: carnage ahead!

The crowd turned out in force on November 30th, filling the Black Lab almost to capacity even before the opening act. Part of the new wave of French hardcore, the concert kicked off with our compatriots Calcine and their modern hardcore sound. Without delay, the quartet kicked off their set with “Parasite” from their album Common Love Common Nausea, released last year, while the mosh pit immediately took shape. Although they were the youngest band of the evening, Calcine had nothing to envy anyone else, as their music and infectious energy commanded the stage! Meanwhile, many heads in the audience were banging to the powerful and heavy songs. There was no downtime, no respite, as singer Stef and her bandmates smoothly played one song after another in front of a captivated audience. In the space of twenty minutes, Calcine proved to be particularly convincing and, what’s more, ideal for warming up the room from the very first moments, even shouting “siamo tutti antifascisti” in the bass, which was taken up by the audience. The quartet closes its set with the excellent “23:11.” What a way to start things off!
We move on to the second act, this time with a Thai band: Whispers. Fans of Evilcore (more specifically “Bangkok Evilcore” for those in the know), the quintet kicks off with a bang with “Retribution” (Yom-Ma-Lok, 2024), delivering a heavy, dark, and devastating sound. Faced with such rage, it’s impossible to remain passive! The audience follows suit as the pogo dancing intensifies. As frontman Nitisart “Mike” Chaiburi points out, this is the first time the band has played in Lille. With the smiles on their faces, it goes without saying that they are enjoying being here! This pleasure is shared by the audience, who are fired up and can’t stop headbanging frantically. In addition to the pogo dancing and headbanging, some people don’t hesitate to climb onto the stage and jump into the crowd for a spot of crowdsurfing. Yes, the intensity is reaching a crescendo! Their sound hits the mark, and some songs are devastatingly powerful, such as “Morbid Vision” with its Dante-esque ending. To conclude with a bang, Whispers chooses to perform “Ruining the Show,” a cover of Kickback (a French hardcore legend, taken from the EP Les 150 Passions Meurtrières). The Thais put on a show, to say the least!
The third act is underway, and now comes a band straight from the United States. Standard-bearers of “Real Bay Shit,” the members of Big Boy take to the stage while shouting out to the bands and audience members present tonight at the Black Lab. In the same vein, singer Brandon Flores personally greets several people in the audience before getting down to business. Like the previous combo, this is Big Boy’s first time in the Lille metropolitan area, an opportunity to show what they can do in twenty minutes. As the first notes of “Now?” (Love Songs, 2025) ring out, the audience transforms and goes completely wild! Whatever anyone says, the beatdown hardcore style is perfect for fighting, with its jerky rhythms, aggressive atmosphere, and more “street” vibe. The mosh pit spreads, people climb on stage, sometimes even grabbing the microphone, and then jump into the sea of people. The Americans can’t believe it: the Black Lab is going wild, they weren’t expecting this… Brandon even goes so far as to call Lille his “new hometown”! With every note, whether on “Mistify” or “Spades” (Spring Promo 2023), we witness an outpouring of energy, chaotic movements, and sweat from the audience, without a single moment of letup. To finish in style, Big Boy performs “A/X (Agony/Ecstasy)” (Winter Promo 2021), bringing a monstrous set to a close. It’s highly likely that this won’t be the last time we see them around!
Now it’s time to shift into fourth gear and welcome headliners Guilt Trip. After causing a sensation at the Zénith in Lille in March as the opening act for Architects, the British band is determined to rock the Black Lab. The quintet kicks things off with “Fallen at My Feet” and “Surrounded by Pain” (Severance, 2023). In a split second, the pit erupts. People are jumping, screaming, pushing and shoving… A hardcore concert done right! Caps screwed onto their heads, the English band gives the audience no respite, delivering their “Manchester Crossover” with surgical precision. The groovy side of their sound, which is their trademark, as well as the numerous breakdowns, are devastating, particularly on “Sweet Dreams” and “Eyes Wide Shut.” For fifty minutes, Guilt Trip runs through its discography, offering us several tracks from more or less recent albums, such as “Unrelenting Force” (Unrelenting Force, 2016) and “Thin Ice” (River of Lies, 2019). Special mention goes to the new song “Burn” (2025) and also to the unreleased track “Angel Eyes,” both of which make quite an impression. The mosh pit has never been as lively as it was during this set, much to the delight of Jacob Valentine and his bandmates, who make no secret of their joy at finishing this European tour in front of such an enthusiastic audience! By putting the audience to the test numerous times, Guilt Trip keeps the flame that connects them burning brighter than ever. A flame that was kept alive one last time tonight with “Davidian” from Machine Head’s repertoire. The perfect finishing touch to bring the pit to a close!
At the end of a masterful performance from start to finish, Guilt Trip confirmed their status as leaders in front of a rabid audience. However, they were not alone: from the raw violence of Big Boy to the sinister atmospheres of Whispers, via the nervous energy of Calcine, each band added their own contribution to the event. In the end, we came out exhausted but happy to have witnessed such a demonstration at the Black Lab!
