Deux ans après l’excellent RAT WARS et quelques mois après un set d’anthologie au Rock In Bourlon, nous voici de retour dans l’univers musical indus noise des américains de HEALTH pour la sortie de leur sixième album. Intitulé CONFLICT DLC, il sera disponible le 11 décembre via Loma Vista Recordings. A la vue de la pochette et de la tracklist présentée comme un face C et D d’un vinyle, on imagine que cet album s’inscrit comme une suite logique du précédent, et autant vous dire qu’à la vue des single on a hâte de s’y plonger.

L’album s’ouvre avec la voix reconnaissable entre mille de Jake Duzsik avec un effet qui rappelle d’entrée l’album précédent. Arrive ensuite ce son indus si caractéristique du trio américain qui vient nous attraper pour ne plus nous lâcher de tout le disque. Ce premier titre semble plus joyeux ou en tout cas plus enjoué que l’ambiance de la sortie précédente, et nous laisse avec un sentiment très dansant servi par la guitare et la basse. « Burn The Candles » confirme la présence de la voix éthérée et des grosses sonorités industrielles. Le titre est dans une vibe très électro et annonce de beaux moments en concerts avec un refrain entêtant. Sur « Vibe Cop », Willie Adler de Lamb Of God vient ajouter ses riffs percutants à ceux de Jake pour un titre qui vient chercher du côté du métal. Ce titre est également taillé pour les concerts tant il est d’une efficacité folle. La section rythmique portée par BJ Miller à la batterie et John Famiglietti à la basse nous enchante toujours plus sur « Trash Decade » avec toujours le chanteur de la formation qui nous émeut avec cette voix absolument dingue. Après un petit interlude où la guitare prend une place de choix le groupe nous emporte dans le très lancinant et portés par les claviers « Antidote » qui vient clore en beauté cette première moitié du disque.
La seconde s’ouvre sur la montée en puissance suivie d’un break et d’une rythmique diablement addictive sur « Darkage » avant que « Shred Envy », qui n’aurait pas pu mieux porter son nom, vienne nous en mettre plein la vue avec une prestation de folie de Jake à la guitare et John à la basse! « You Died » et « Thought Leader » sonnent comme du pur HEALTH et nous montrent à quel point la formation sait nous pondre des singles d’une inventivité folle qui vous restent en tête dès les premiers instants. Si le premier des deux possèdes des parties à reprendre en chœur, le second est bien plus pesant et nous laisse dans un sentiment d’oppression totalement maîtrisé. L’avant dernier titre s’ouvre sur ce qui semble être une collégiale de voix avec un clavier bien plus lumineux qui vient contrebalancer les parties plus industrielles du titre. On sent une envie d’aller vers la lumière assez présente dans ce morceau, ce qui vient contraster ave l’atmosphère plus sombre qu’on connaît de la formation. « Wasted Years » ferme l’album avec une composition plus longue et une gros travail sonore, une fois de plus. Toute la formation y donne son meilleur tout en y infusant toute l’étendue de leur univers sonore. Le titre, et l’album se terminent sur des sons de foule qui cirent, ce qui nous donne envie de revivre au plus vite l’expérience HEALTH en live!
Avec CONFLICT DLC, HEALTH nous livrent un album un peu plus lumineux que le précédent mais qui garde toute l’identité sonore qui fait le succès des américains. Comme toujours on se laisse porter par ces sonorités maîtrisées de bout en bout qui montrent à quel point les trois musiciens savent créer cette fameuse « sad music for horny people » (musique triste pour personnes chaudes). Une très belle sortie qui va tourner longuement dans nos oreilles et on l’espère dans les vôtres!
Two years after the excellent RAT WARS and a few months after an anthological set at Rock In Bourlon, we are back in the industrial noise musical universe of the American band HEALTH for the release of their sixth album. Entitled CONFLICT DLC, it will be available on 11 December via Loma Vista Recordings. Judging by the cover art and tracklist, presented as sides C and D of a vinyl record, we imagine that this album is a logical follow-up to the previous one, and suffice to say that after hearing the singles, we can’t wait to dive in.
The album opens with Jake Duzsik‘s instantly recognisable voice, with an effect that immediately recalls the previous album. Then comes the industrial sound so characteristic of the American trio, which grabs us and doesn’t let go for the rest of the album. This first track seems more joyful, or at least more playful than the mood of the previous release, leaving us with a very danceable feeling served up by the guitar and bass. ‘Burn The Candles’ confirms the presence of ethereal vocals and heavy industrial sounds. The track has a very electro vibe and promises great moments in concert with its catchy chorus. On ‘Vibe Cop’, Willie Adler of Lamb Of God adds his powerful riffs to Jake‘s for a track that leans towards metal. This track is also tailor-made for concerts, as it is incredibly effective. The rhythm section, led by BJ Miller on drums and John Famiglietti on bass, continues to delight us on ‘Trash Decade’, with the band’s singer moving us with his absolutely incredible voice. After a short interlude where the guitar takes centre stage, the band carries us away with the haunting, keyboard-driven ‘Antidote’, which brings the first half of the album to a beautiful close.
The second half opens with a crescendo followed by a break and a devilishly addictive rhythm on ‘Darkage’ before ‘Shred Envy’, which couldn’t be more aptly named, blows us away with a crazy performance by Jake on guitar and John on bass! ‘You Died’ and ‘Thought Leader’ sound like pure HEALTH and show us how good the band is at producing wildly inventive singles that stick in your head from the very first notes. While the first of the two has parts to sing along to, the second is much heavier and leaves us with a feeling of totally controlled oppression. The penultimate track opens with what sounds like a choir of voices with a much brighter keyboard that counterbalances the more industrial parts of the track. There is a palpable desire to move towards the light in this track, which contrasts with the darker atmosphere we know from the band. ‘Wasted Years’ closes the album with a longer composition and, once again, a lot of work on the sound. The whole band gives it their all, infusing the track with the full extent of their sound universe. The track, and the album, end with the sounds of a cheering crowd, which makes us want to relive the HEALTH live experience as soon as possible!
With CONFLICT DLC, HEALTH deliver an album that is slightly brighter than their previous release but retains all the sonic identity that has made the Americans so successful. As always, we are carried away by these masterful sounds that show just how well the three musicians know how to create that famous ‘sad music for horny people’. A beautiful release that will stay with us for a long time, and we hope with you too!
