En tournée pour nous présenter leur dernier album VOICES, les français de Not Scientists étaient de passage à Béthune ce 12 décembre dernier. C’était en premier lieu bad bad bird qui avait été annoncé en première partie mais qui a dû décommander en raison d’un heureux évènement. Pour la date au Poche, ce sont donc les locaux de Ipkiss qui ont pris la relève avec leur pop punk.

On démarre donc la soirée avec du local, pour notre plus grand plaisir. Nous avons déjà vu Ipkiss à plusieurs reprises et on avait hâte de voir ce qu’ils nous ont concocté pour cette belle scène du Poche. D’emblée leur pop punk se teinte de riffs mélodiques et la rythmique se fait très entrainante. Ça joue fort et on entend peu la voix au début du set. Cela s’équilibre un peu plus au fur et à mesure. Le groupe joue sur le côté old school dans les sonorités. Au-delà de la pop-punk, on entend également du skate punk tout droit sorti du début des années 2000. Ipkiss s’attaque même aux influences hardcore. Le micro principal change alors de main et devient même filaire à un moment, afin de venir hurler dans le public pendant “Nuggets”. La transition samplée nous fait d’ailleurs penser à l’univers de Locomuerte, bien énervé et festif. “Tyrol” nous fait revenir dans des émotions plus complexes et nuancées. La basse, bien présente dans le mix tout au long du set, confère un aspect ancré aux sonorités. On note également que la voix se fait de plus en plus posée à chaque concert, même si elle l’est moins dans les notes aiguës de fin de show. On voit l’évolution de Ipkiss de concert en concert et on n’a aucun doute sur le fait que cela continue ! Leur pop-punk réchauffe le cœur et est très efficace sur cette première partie de soirée.

Les musiciens de Not Scientists arrivent sur scène sur des musiques de jeux vidéo rétros. Puis c’est parti pour un enchaînement de titres ! Très vite la sonorité claire de la guitare de Ed (chant, guitare) vient nous chopper. Elle est, au moins au début, contrastée par la guitare aux accents plus destroy de Fred, dans une sorte de dissonance maîtrisée. C’est bien VOICES qui est représenté dès le début du set, avec un enchaînement de “ENDGAME” et “BURNOUT”. Le groupe nous avait d’ailleurs évoqué ce dernier titre lors de leur interview, disant qu’il serait cool à jouer. Et bien il est également très chouette à entendre sur scène, et très efficace ! On entre alors totalement dans l’univers du groupe, riche de nombreuses influences. Avec VOICES, Not Scientists a renoué avec la tradition des refrains et forcément cela claque en live. Le groupe joue avec les effets, y compris dans la voix de Ed, iconique avec cette petite reverb discrète mais nécessaire pour créer quelque chose qui leur ressemble. Les passages plus percutants sont contrebalancés par de douces mélodies, toutes en nuances. Au milieu de tous ces nouveaux titres, quelques incontournables sont toujours présents dans la setlist, à l’instar de “RattleSnake” ou “Paper Crown. Le groupe nous interprète également une reprise, remise dans leur univers, de “÷8×5” initialement jouée par UK Subs. “VOICES” est une pure merveille en live, avec parfois un petit côté pop punk qui vient rejoindre Ipkiss. On entend également beaucoup d’influences post punk et cold punk dans toutes les riches compositions. “THE CITY CALLS” diffuse une atmosphère plus ambiante dans la salle, avec sa longueur qui invite à prendre le temps, tout en étant très efficace en live. Et à ce niveau on est servi avec “Perfect World” qui fait toujours son petit effet! Le concert se termine temporairement avec “THE ARCHITECT”, titre plutôt posé qui clôt également leur dernier opus. Le groupe est évidemment rappelé, et on termine le set sur un déferlement d’énergie aussi bien dans le public que sur scène. Ce sont “PHONE” et le célèbre “Leave Stickers on our Graves” qui font office d’au revoir à Not Scientists. Cet avant dernier titre, permet de mettre en avant la base rythmique de Tatane (basse) et Le Bazile (batterie).

On savait que Not Scientists valait le coup d’être vu en live. Mais avec leur dernier album, le groupe passe un réel cap. Au total, la formation joue dix des douze nouveaux titres. On aurait adoré voir ce que donnait “BALL AND CHAIN” en live, cette composition étant résolument post-rock et différente des autres. Mais on ne peut pas être déçus de ce concert de haute volée !

Le Poche nous a encore offert un grand moment, entre groupe local et formation plus expérimentée. Comme régulièrement depuis le début de la saison, la salle affiche un joli remplissage. Le disposition et le son de la salle nous permettent de profiter au mieux de cette belle programmation. On s’est régalé avec Ipkiss et Not Scientists alors merci Le Poche !

On tour to present their latest album VOICES, French band Not Scientists stopped off in Béthune on December 12th. Bad Bad Bird had originally been announced as the opening act, but had to cancel due to a happy event. For the show at Le Poche, local band Ipkiss stepped in with their pop punk sound.

So we kick off the evening with a local band, much to our delight. We had already seen Ipkiss several times and were eager to see what they had in store for us on the beautiful stage at Le Poche. Right from the start, their pop punk was tinged with melodic riffs and the rhythm was very catchy. They played loud and the vocals were hard to hear at the beginning of the set. This balanced out a little more as the set progressed. The band’s sound has an old-school feel to it. Beyond pop-punk, we also hear skate punk straight out of the early 2000s. Ipkiss even tackles hardcore influences. The main microphone then changes hands and even becomes wired at one point, so that the singer can shout into the audience during “Nuggets.” The sampled transition reminds us of the angry and festive world of Locomuerte. “Tyrol” brings us back to more complex and nuanced emotions. The bass, which is very present in the mix throughout the set, gives the sound a grounded feel. We also note that the vocals become more and more composed with each concert, even if they are less so in the high notes at the end of the show. We can see Ipkiss’s evolution from concert to concert and have no doubt that it will continue! Their pop-punk warms the heart and is very effective in this first part of the evening.

The musicians of Not Scientists take to the stage to the sound of retro video game music. Then they launch into a series of songs! Very quickly, the clear sound of Ed‘s guitar (vocals, guitar) grabs our attention. At least at the beginning, it contrasts with Fred‘s more destructive guitar playing, creating a kind of controlled dissonance. VOICES, is well represented from the start of the set, with a sequence of “ENDGAME” and “BURNOUT.” The band had mentioned the latter song during their interview, saying it would be cool to play. Well, it’s also very nice to hear on stage, and very effective! We are then completely immersed in the band’s universe, rich in many influences. With VOICES, Not Scientists has reconnected with the tradition of choruses, and of course it rocks live. The band plays with effects, including Ed’s voice, iconic with its subtle but necessary reverb, creating something that is uniquely theirs. The more powerful passages are counterbalanced by soft, nuanced melodies. Amidst all these new tracks, a few essentials are still present in the setlist, such as “RattleSnake” and “Paper Crown.” The band also performs a cover version of “÷8×5,” originally played by UK Subs, reimagined in their own style. “VOICES” is a pure marvel live, with occasional pop punk touches reminiscent of Ipkiss. There are also many post punk and cold punk influences in all of the rich compositions. “THE CITY CALLS” creates a more ambient atmosphere in the room, with its length inviting you to take your time, while still being very effective live. And in this regard, we are treated to “Perfect World,” which always makes an impression! The concert ends temporarily with “THE ARCHITECT,” a rather calm track that also closes their latest album. The band is obviously called back for an encore, and the set ends with a surge of energy from both the audience and the stage. “PHONE” and the famous “Leave Stickers on our Graves” serve as a farewell to Not Scientists. This penultimate track highlights the rhythm section of Tatane (bass) and Le Bazile (drums).

We knew that Not Scientists were worth seeing live. But with their latest album, the band has really stepped up their game. In total, the band played ten of the twelve new tracks. We would have loved to see what “BALL AND CHAIN” sounded like live, as this composition is decidedly post-rock and different from the others. But we can’t be disappointed with this high-quality concert!

Le Poche gave us another great night, featuring a local band and a more experienced group. As has been the case regularly since the start of the season, the venue was nicely filled. The layout and sound of the venue allowed us to enjoy this great lineup to the fullest. We had a blast with Ipkiss and Not Scientists, so thank you, Le Poche!
