Un an et demi après l’excellent Todbringerin, qui revisitait intégralement d’anciens morceaux, Ellende nous propose de découvrir leur sixième album studio. L.G. toujours au commande du projet nous présente en ce tout début d’année Zerfall. Disponible dès le 2 janvier via AOP records cet album de neuf titres nous plonge une fois de plus dans un black métal des plus captivants venant toucher nos émotions profondes.

Dès l’intro « Nur » on sent que la mélodie sera encore au coeur de ce disque du projet venu de Graz. Les instruments tous joués par L.G. a l’exception de la batterie viennent nous prendre au coeur et nous plonger dans cet état de contemplation émotionnelle qui sied parfaitement à la musique servie ici. Le morceau suivant « Warhrheit », divisé en deux parties distinctes nous livre l’excellence à laquelle le musicien autrichien nous a habitué. Son chant est également magistral alternant avec brio entre cris déchirants et chuchotements habités. La présence d’un piano dans une grande majorité des titres, comme « Zerfall » par exemple vient renforcer l’identité forte que Ellende s’est forgé au fil des années. Le morceau « Übertritt » s’ouvre sur des sonorités de guitares, là aussi étonnantes avant de nous laisser plonger encore plus loin dans un black métal cathartique à souhait. On poursuit avec le magnifique « Ode Ans Licht », morceau qui, comme son nom l’indique, est plus tourné vers la lumière et s’éloigne presque de la vision qu’on se fait du black métal. La guitare est douce et le piano une fois encore présent. La partie de batterie, servie comme sur tout l’album par P.F., confirme cette inclinaison pour ce titre avec un jeu un peu plus doux. On a clairement là une des plus belles mélodies du disque et on ne se lasse pas de s’y plonger. Les choeurs en fin de titre vienne terminer de nous coller des frissons. Retour d’un morceau en deux parties avec « Zeitenwende » qui accueille sur chaque partie un invité de marque. La première partie lancée au pianon est sublimée par le violon de Klara Bachmair de Firtan, qui nous émerveille par son talent une fois de plus. Encore une fois le projet nous captive avec un son dont lui seul à le secret. Sur la seconde partie c’est le guitariste Peter Mairhofer, de Norikun, qui vient nous servir un solo de guitare d’anthologie. Les deux invités font cohabiter leur univers à celui du musicien autrichien avec brio pour deux parties d’un titre qui se classe dans ce que le musicien autrichien à su proposer de meilleur et de plus inventif en terme de sonorités. Le voyage musical prend fin avec « Reise » où une voix de femme au téléphone nous accueille avant que la musique vienne nous emporter une dernière fois. Des chœurs et une guitare acoustique viennent entrecouper le morceau pour un moment suspendu. On ne se lasse pas d’être surpris de cette manière à chaque titre, et encore moins dans ce final qui clôt l’album avec brio. Deux titres bonus sont présents sur certaines versions du disque mais on vous propose de les découvrir par vous même au fil de votre écoute.
Avec Zerfall, Ellende nous prouve une fois de plus qu’on peut s’encrer dans un black métal des plus envoutants tout en y incorporant des sonorités étonnantes qui subliment le tout. L’album regorge d’idées de composition qui ne font que renforcer notre idée que ce projet autrichien est un nom à part dans cette scène européenne foisonnante. On ne pouvait rêver mieux pour débuter 2026 et on vous encourage vivement à foncer écouter le disque dès sa sortie.

A year and a half after the excellent Todbringerin, which revisited old tracks in their entirety, Ellende invites us to discover its sixth studio album. L.G., still at the helm of the project, presents Zerfall at the very beginning of the year. Available from January 2nd via AOP Records, this nine-track album once again plunges us into the most captivating black metal, touching our deepest emotions.
From the intro ‘Nur’ onwards, it is clear that melody will once again be at the heart of this album from the Graz-based project. The instruments, all played by L.G. with the exception of the drums, tug at our heartstrings and plunge us into a state of emotional contemplation that perfectly suits the music on offer here. The following track, ‘Warhrheit’, divided into two distinct parts, delivers the excellence we have come to expect from the Austrian musician. His singing is also masterful, alternating brilliantly between heart-rending cries and haunting whispers. The presence of a piano in the vast majority of tracks, such as ‘Zerfall’ for example, reinforces the strong identity that Ellende has forged over the years. The track ‘Übertritt’ opens with guitar sounds, which are also surprising, before plunging us even further into cathartic black metal. We continue with the magnificent ‘Ode Ans Licht’, a track which, as its name suggests, is more light-hearted and almost strays from the usual black metal vibe. The guitar is soft and the piano is once again present. The drumming, provided throughout the album by P.F., confirms this inclination for this track with a slightly softer style. This is clearly one of the most beautiful melodies on the album, and one that you never tire of listening to. The backing vocals at the end of the track give us goosebumps. We return to a two-part track with ‘Zeitenwende’, which features a distinguished guest on each part. The first part, launched on the piano, is enhanced by the violin of Klara Bachmair from Firtan, who once again amazes us with her talent. Once again, the project captivates us with a sound that only it knows how to create. In the second part, guitarist Peter Mairhofer from Norikun treats us to an anthology guitar solo. The two guests brilliantly combine their worlds with that of the Austrian musician for two parts of a track that ranks among the best and most inventive in terms of sound that the Austrian musician has to offer. The musical journey ends with ‘Reise’, where a woman’s voice on the telephone welcomes us before the music carries us away one last time. Choirs and an acoustic guitar punctuate the track, creating a moment of suspense. We never tire of being surprised in this way with each track, and even less so in this finale, which brings the album to a brilliant close. Two bonus tracks are included on some versions of the disc, but we suggest you discover them for yourself as you listen to the album.
With Zerfall, Ellende proves once again that it is possible to immerse oneself in the most captivating black metal while incorporating surprising sounds that enhance the whole. The album is brimming with compositional ideas that only reinforce our belief that this Austrian project is a name apart in the thriving European scene. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to 2026, and we strongly encourage you to rush out and listen to the album as soon as it’s released.
