Le jeune groupe Bordelais LOVESWAMP a sorti son premier EP en cette fin d’année. Entièrement autoproduit et mixé en interne, les cinq titres sont une vraie présentation de leur univers, alors que le groupe tourne principalement dans son Sud Ouest originel.

On démarre fort avec “Cut Throat”, titre d’un peu plus de 4 minutes, dans lequel la voix puissante d’Arnaud vient nous choper par ses cris. On se sent proche de l’esprit noise, puissant et massif. On change d’ambiance avec “In this eden” et une voix ici plus claire, des rythmiques plus déstructurées, notamment assurés par la batterie de Marceau, des effets au niveau de la guitare de Alex… On reste dans ce petit côté noise, tout en y intégrant des éléments très grunge. Un saxophone vient même agrémenter ce titre en fin, réalisé par Trystan, frère de Marceau au demeurant. La voix de Lilou Ryhen vient également ajouté de la matière à ce titre déjà bien fourni. “Never Again” conserve ce côté grunge, avec là aussi des rythmes presque chaloupés et quelque peu déstructurés, mais avec cette fois l’ajout d’influences plus old school. La voix comme la guitare se font plus claires, du moins au début… Le titre monte progressivement en puissance, et une force vient nous saisir lorsque l’on arrive sur les cris, semblant venir des tripes, et dégageant un flot d’émotions enfouies.
LOVESWAMP aime jouer avec la surprise et nous sort “Salvation” qui vient intégrer là des éléments de l’ordre du metal extrême, entre doom et black, tout en conservant un côté résolument rock. On y entend des passages lourds et mystérieux à la fois, dont émane une ambiance horror show. Si un clip existait, on s’attendrait à y voir nombre de monstres surgir.
On termine ce riche EP en termes de sonorités, par le titre le plus long : “Under Control”. La ligne de basse d’Eric est bien présente et plante une base solide et ancrée. Là aussi, on ressent des influences diverses, aussi bien en termes de genres musicaux que d’époque. La voix grave est vraiment une signature du groupe. A l’arrière, on oscille entre passages hypnotisants par leur douleur et leur lenteur, et moments où l’on se prend une bonne dose de puissance, avec un son massif et plus saturé. On ne peut donc jamais s’ennuyer par une construction particulièrement réfléchie de ces titres.
LOVESWAMP n’est pas forcément classable dans une catégorie de musique. Le groupe ne se met pas de limites et joue avec ses influences qui vont du grunge de Alice in Chains, au rock old school à la Alice Cooper, en passant par des éléments de punk, de post-punk, de noise parfois plus moderne… Donc si vous êtes dans le coin de Bordeaux, on vous conseille d’aller voir ce que donne cette formation sur scène, et sinon faites comme nous, prenez un aperçu grâce à ce premier EP : LEVITATION.

The young Bordeaux band LOVESWAMP released their first EP at the end of the year. Entirely self-produced and mixed in-house, the five tracks are a true representation of their world, as the band tours mainly in their native South West.

We start off strong with ‘Cut Throat’, a track just over four minutes long, in which Arnaud‘s powerful voice grabs us with his screams. We feel close to the spirit of noise, powerful and massive. The mood changes with ‘In this eden’, with a clearer voice, more unstructured rhythms, notably provided by Marceau‘s drums, and effects on Alex‘s guitar… We remain in this slightly noisy vein, while incorporating some very grunge elements. A saxophone even embellishes this track at the end, played by Trystan, Marceau‘s brother. Lilou Ryhen‘s vocals also add substance to this already rich track. ‘Never Again’ retains this grunge feel, with rhythms that are almost swaying and somewhat unstructured, but this time with the addition of more old-school influences. Both the vocals and the guitar are clearer, at least at the beginning… The track gradually builds in power, and a force grabs hold of us when we reach the screams, which seem to come from the gut and release a flood of buried emotions.
LOVESWAMP likes to play with surprises and brings us ‘Salvation’, which incorporates elements of extreme metal, somewhere between doom and black, while retaining a resolutely rock feel. There are passages that are both heavy and mysterious, creating a horror show atmosphere. If there were a video clip, we would expect to see a number of monsters popping up.
This rich EP in terms of sound ends with the longest track: ‘Under Control’. Eric‘s bass line is very present and lays down a solid, anchored foundation. Here too, we feel various influences, both in terms of musical genres and era. The deep voice is truly the band’s signature. In the background, we oscillate between passages that are hypnotic in their pain and slowness, and moments where we get a good dose of power, with a massive and more saturated sound. We can never get bored with the particularly thoughtful construction of these tracks.
LOVESWAMP cannot necessarily be classified into a specific music category. The band sets no limits and plays with influences ranging from the grunge of Alice in Chains to old-school rock à la Alice Cooper, with elements of punk, post-punk and sometimes more modern noise.
