Calling All Captains propose d’entrée de jeu un punk rock très mélodique, aux accents pop punk et émo. La voix de Luc Gauthier est très efficace, et fait émerger une émotion sincère, comme si l’on arrivait à ressentir toute la fragilité derrière cette belle justesse. “Stay Away”, premier titre de l’opus est efficace, trouvant un équilibre entre l’agressivité et la mélodie. “Call Me” nous embarque également sur le terrain des émotions. La voix de Luc Gauthier côtoie celles de Connor Dawkins et de Brad Bremner -tous deux également à la guitare – et se répondent dans un rythme effréné. La mélodie est là aussi particulièrement marquante. La batterie de Tim Wilson amène une dynamique très punk rock, jamais trop répétitive. “Blood for Blood” marque le milieu de cet EP et est particulièrement marquant. On part ici sur une vibe beaucoup plus agressive, avec un chant parfois screamé, plus proche à certains égards du punk hardcore. Toutefois on ne perd pas ce côté mélodique qui caractérise Calling All Captains, un peu à la manière de Beartooth. On sent une grande force, venant des tripes, qui émane de ce titre. Avec “Say That You Hate Me”, on reprend le côté très émotionnel, en tout cas au début. On retrouve ensuite une énergie qui est une suite parfaite pour cet EP. L’ordre des compositions est travaillé et a une importance particulière dans The Things That I’ve Lost. On démarre en effet sur un pop punk mélodique et énergique, avant de rencontrer une réelle fracture avec “Blood for Blood”, puis tout se mêle pour obtenir trois derniers titres explosifs et plein d’émotions. On se sent pris dans un véritable tourbillon, et “Dark Clouds” avec son tempo rapide ne compte pas calmer le jeu ! “Salt Lines” clot l’EP sur une note plutôt sombre, avec des riffs plus lourds et une voix également plus grave. Ce titre de plus de 4 minutes est particulièrement complexe, et alterne passages très calmes, introspectifs, et explosions qui laissent sortir un torrent d’émotions entremêlées.
Calling All Captains nous offre un EP particulièrement riche et résolument moderne. Le punk rock Canadien du début des années 2000 cotoie le punk hardcore moderne. Énergie et émotions sont les maîtres mots de The Things That I’ve Lost. Très accessible et rapide, il s’écoute d’une traite, et on vous le conseille !

Calling All Captains opens with highly melodic punk rock, with pop punk and emo influences. Luc Gauthier‘s voice is very effective, conveying sincere emotion, as if we can feel all the fragility behind his beautiful accuracy. ‘Stay Away’, the first track on the album, is effective, striking a balance between aggression and melody. ‘Call Me’ also takes us on an emotional journey. Luc Gauthier‘s voice rubs shoulders with those of Connor Dawkins and Brad Bremner – both also on guitar – and they respond to each other at a frenetic pace. The melody is also particularly striking here. Tim Wilson‘s drums bring a very punk rock dynamic that is never too repetitive. ‘Blood for Blood’ marks the middle of this EP and is particularly striking. Here we start with a much more aggressive vibe, with occasional screaming vocals, closer in some ways to hardcore punk. However, we don’t lose the melodic side that characterises Calling All Captains, a bit like Beartooth. We feel a great strength, coming from the guts, emanating from this track. With ‘Say That You Hate Me’, we return to the highly emotional side, at least at the beginning. We then find an energy that is a perfect continuation for this EP. The order of the compositions is carefully crafted and has particular importance in The Things That I’ve Lost. We start with melodic and energetic pop punk, before encountering a real break with ‘Blood for Blood’, then everything comes together for three explosive and emotional final tracks. We feel caught up in a real whirlwind, and ‘Dark Clouds’ with its fast tempo is not about to calm things down! ‘Salt Lines’ closes the EP on a rather dark note, with heavier riffs and a deeper voice. This track, which lasts over four minutes, is particularly complex, alternating between very calm, introspective passages and explosions that release a torrent of intertwined emotions.
Calling All Captains offers us a particularly rich and resolutely modern EP. Early 2000s Canadian punk rock rubs shoulders with modern hardcore punk. Energy and emotion are the watchwords of The Things That I’ve Lost. Very accessible and fast-paced, it can be listened to in one go, and we recommend it!
