Les vétérans californiens de Lionheart reviennent ce 9 janvier avec un nouvel album Valley of Death II via le label Arising Empire. Suite légitime du premier volet sorti en 2019 et qui va malheureusement confirmer la descente dans cette fameuse vallée de la Mort où nous n’allons pas faire vieux os.

L’album s’ouvre avec “Bulletproof” qui dès les premières notes, nous reconnaissons la signature sonore de Lionheart, qu’ils cultivent depuis 2020, portée par la voix iconique de Rob Watson. Assez troublé par le mixage et mastering, notamment au travers des guitares qui sonnent très Landmvrks, c’est sans surprise qu’avec des petites recherches que le nom de Florent Salfati (chanteur de Landmvrks) apparait parmi les personnes ayant travaillé sur le projet. Une introduction convenable pour la suite du projet.
Très vite, la coqueluche américaine du moment à savoir Matt Honeycutt de Kublai Khan TX fait son apparition pour un featuring, “Chewing Through The Leash”, dont la composition semble être faite pour lui notamment avec des breakdowns lui laissant un terrain parfait pour chanter et des gimmick d’aboiements qui ne fait réagir plus grand monde. Vient ensuite une petite curiosité sonore sur “Ice Cold” avec l’entrée du catcheur « Stone Cold » Steve Austin en intro au morceau qui plutôt teinté beatdown comparé au reste du projet. A l’instar de “No Peace” et “Salt the Earth”, les sujets abordés restent les mêmes depuis leur deux derniers albums du groupe, à savoir la gestion des émotions, la vie qui vous rend froid. Un peu la philosophie de Lionheart à savoir pas de répit, pas de compromis ni pour soi même.
>Pour finir, nous pouvons relever deux morceaux intéressant. Le premier “Roll Call”, titre le plus fédérateur de l’album, clairement pensé pour le live. Nous y retrouvons des chants en chœur, parfait pour encourager le public à venir saisir le micro lors des concerts et un breakdown pour bien clore ce son. Et en second le titre qui viendra clôturer l’album “Death Grip” qui nous offre un petit solo de guitare de la part de Kevin Skaff de A Day to Remember.
Le projet Valley of Death II reste cohérent dans la lignée de ce que nous propose Lionheart depuis 2016. Avec ce nouvel opus, ils n’essayeront pas de réinventer le hardcore, juste de reprends les même ingrédient qui ont fait la réussite de Lionheart sur les dernières années, avec quelques touches d’amélioration. Le groupe avance droit devant sans faire de concession, ni en cherchant l’approbation à l’instar de ce qu’ils défendent dans ce dernier album. Le groupe est à retrouver au Bataclan (Paris) le 18 janvier prochain.

California veterans Lionheart return on January 9th with a new album, Valley of Death II, via the Arising Empire label. This is the legitimate sequel to the first installment released in 2019, which unfortunately confirms our descent into the infamous Valley of Death, where we will not live to a ripe old age.

The album opens with “Bulletproof,” and from the very first notes, we recognize Lionheart‘s signature sound, which they have been cultivating since 2020, carried by Rob Watson‘s iconic voice. Quite troubled by the mixing and mastering, particularly the guitars, which sound very Landmvrks, it comes as no surprise that a little research reveals the name of Florent Salfati (singer of Landmvrks) among those who worked on the project. A fitting introduction to the rest of the project.
Very quickly, the current American darling Matt Honeycutt from Kublai Khan TX makes an appearance for a feature, “Chewing Through The Leash,” whose composition seems tailor-made for him, with breakdowns that give him the perfect opportunity to sing and barking gimmicks that don’t really get much of a reaction from anyone anymore. Next comes a little sonic curiosity on “Ice Cold” with the entrance of wrestler “Stone Cold” Steve Austin in the intro to the track, which is more beatdown-tinged compared to the rest of the project. Like “No Peace” and “Salt the Earth,” the subjects covered remain the same as on the band’s last two albums, namely managing emotions and life making you cold. This is somewhat in line with Lionheart’s philosophy of no respite and no compromise, even for oneself.
Finally, there are two interesting tracks worth mentioning. The first is “Roll Call,” the most unifying track on the album, clearly designed for live performances. It features choir vocals, perfect for encouraging the audience to grab the mic at concerts, and a breakdown to round off the sound nicely. And secondly, the track that closes the album, “Death Grip,” which features a short guitar solo by Kevin Skaff from A Day to Remember.
The Valley of Death II project remains consistent with what Lionheart has been offering since 2016. With this new album, they are not trying to reinvent hardcore, but rather to revisit the same ingredients that have made Lionheart so successful in recent years, with a few improvements. The band is forging ahead without compromise, nor seeking approval, as reflected in their latest album. The band will be performing at the Bataclan (Paris) on January 18th.
