Tandis que le printemps 2026 promet l’arrivée d’un second album, les américains de Demons My Friends et le prestigieux label californien Ripple Music ont eu la bonne idée de remettre en lumière Demons Seem To Gather, le premier disque du power trio. Pour l’occasion, le groupe ne fait pas les choses à moitié avec un remastering complet par Esben Willems (batteur de Monolord) au Studio Berserk en Suède, et surtout une sortie inédite en CD et vinyle prévue pour le 16 janvier.

C’est en 2022, lors d’une session d’enregistrement improvisée au SXSW Festival à Austin (Texas), que naît Demons My Friends. Originaires de Mexico, les trois musiciens entament l’année suivante la production de ce premier opus. Explorant leur propre voyage intérieur depuis le début de la pandémie, le disque met en scène un vigoureux combat contre leurs démons, de l’anxiété au doute de soi, en passant par la dépression. Près de trois ans plus tard, cette réédition nous invite à replonger dans cette grande lutte introspective.
D’emblée, “The Tower Falls” s’abat sur l’auditeur avec la force d’un édifice qui s’effondre. Grâce à un son lourd et écrasant, le titre dévoile instantanément la force de frappe du trio, évoquant la lourdeur du doom couplée à la voix planante de Pablo Anton (guitare/chant). Son comparse, Lu Salinas (basse/chant), vient contraster l’ensemble avec une voix étouffée et un timbre plus caverneux, accentuant l’aspect oppressant de la chanson.
L’album se poursuit dans cette sombre introspection. Sur “Bring The Night”, la formation traduit l’anxiété nocturne sous la forme d’un groove hypnotique, aux influences plutôt stoner et psychédélique. À présent, nous plongeons encore plus profondément dans les abysses avec “Inner Slay”. Véritable dialogue intérieur avec la dépression, ce morceau, typique du grunge des années 90 à la Alice in Chains, révèle un riff particulièrement accrocheur, propulsé par la batterie infernale de Tarro Martinez.
Le superbe “Ghosts of You” témoigne ensuite du talent de Demons My Friends à réduire sa force de frappe quand il le faut. Le groupe laisse ici place aux fantômes du passé, portés par une ambiance heavy plus aérienne et le chant clair du bassiste Lu. Cependant, l’émotion et la résignation cèdent maintenant la place à la colère. En témoigne le politique “Make Them Pay”, où la vengeance et l’accusation deviennent les sujets principaux. C’est certainement le titre le plus colérique de l’album, avec, comme point culminant, une énorme séance de headbanging ! “Your Bones” s’inscrit également dans cette optique de rébellion, bien que penchant davantage dans la paranoïa. Une composition intéressante mais moins explosive que la précédente.
Intercalé entre ces deux morceaux, nous retrouvons l’excellent “Fire Mountain”, un stoner rock à la fois épique et conquérant. Nous tenons là l’un des titres phares de l’œuvre grâce à des riffs massifs qui se marient superbement avec la voix du vocaliste tout au long de ces quatre minutes… De quoi gravir des montagnes, en somme ! Demons Seem To Gather se conclut sur l’appel aux armes de “We Are The Resistance”, un final fédérateur à la fois lent et nerveux concrétisant l’entrée en résistance de Pablo, Lu et Tarro après leur éprouvante traversée des ténèbres.
D’excellente facture, cette réédition 2026 chez Ripple Music est avant tout une séance de rattrapage pour ceux qui auraient manqué la sortie originale en 2023. Bénéficiant enfin de la distribution qu’il mérite, cet album pertinent et percutant prépare idéalement le terrain pour la suite des hostilités, prévue au printemps.

With a second album promised for spring 2026, American band Demons My Friends and prestigious Californian label Ripple Music have had the bright idea of re-releasing Demons Seem To Gather, the power trio’s debut album. For the occasion, the band is pulling out all the stops with a complete remastering by Esben Willems (drummer for Monolord) at Studio Berserk in Sweden, and, most importantly, a new release on CD and vinyl scheduled for January 16th.
Demons My Friends was born in 2022 during an impromptu recording session at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. Hailing from Mexico City, the three musicians began production on their debut album the following year. Exploring their own inner journey since the start of the pandemic, the album depicts a vigorous battle against their demons, from anxiety and self-doubt to depression. Nearly three years later, this reissue invites us to dive back into this great introspective struggle.
From the outset, ‘The Tower Falls’ hits the listener with the force of a collapsing building. With its heavy, crushing sound, the track instantly reveals the trio’s striking power, evoking the heaviness of doom metal coupled with the soaring voice of Pablo Anton (guitar/vocals). His partner, Lu Salinas (bass/vocals), contrasts the whole with a muffled voice and a more cavernous tone, accentuating the oppressive aspect of the song.
The album continues in this dark introspective vein. On ‘Bring The Night’, the band translates nocturnal anxiety into a hypnotic groove, with stoner and psychedelic influences. Now we dive even deeper into the abyss with ‘Inner Slay’. A true inner dialogue with depression, this track, typical of 90s grunge à la Alice in Chains, reveals a particularly catchy riff, propelled by Tarro Martinez‘s infernal drums.
The superb ‘Ghosts of You’ then demonstrates Demons My Friends‘ talent for toning down their punch when necessary. Here, the band gives way to the ghosts of the past, carried by a lighter heavy atmosphere and the clear vocals of bassist Lu. However, emotion and resignation now give way to anger. This is evident in the political ‘Make Them Pay’, where revenge and accusation become the main themes. It is certainly the angriest track on the album, culminating in a huge headbanging session! ‘Your Bones’ also follows this rebellious vein, although leaning more towards paranoia. It is an interesting composition, but less explosive than the previous one.
Sandwiched between these two tracks is the excellent ‘Fire Mountain’, an epic and conquering stoner rock song. This is one of the highlights of the album, thanks to massive riffs that blend superbly with the vocalist’s voice throughout these four minutes… Enough to climb mountains, in short! Demons Seem To Gather concludes with the call to arms of ‘We Are The Resistance’, a unifying finale that is both slow and nervous, cementing Pablo, Lu and Tarro‘s entry into the resistance after their gruelling journey through darkness.
This excellent reissue from Ripple Music in 2026 is above all a chance for those who missed the original release in 2023 to catch up. Finally receiving the distribution it deserves, this relevant and powerful album perfectly sets the stage for the next instalment, scheduled for release in the spring.
