Trois ans après l’album Memorial qui avait surpris les fans par une approche sonore assez différente de ce à quoi ils nous avaient habitués par le passé, les suédois de Soen viennent nous proposer en ce premier mois de l’année leur septième album studio. Intitulé Reliance, il sera disponible dès le 16 janvier via Silver Lining Music. Que nous réserve la formation prog rock avec ces dix nouveaux titres? Nous partons le découvrir avec vous!

L’album s’ouvre sur « Primal », un titre étonnant puisque le couplet s’avère être quasi dépourvu de guitares, mais celles-ci arrivent bien vite. Le morceau, déjà disponible depuis quelques temps se veux très politique et libertaire. Le refrain puissant met en avant la voix magnifique de Joel Ekelöf, pensant que le bridge plus doux nous laisse profiter du talent des musiciens. On enchaîne avec « Mercenary », titre très martial dans ses couplets et puissant de part son thème évoquant la croyance aveugle et les dégâts qu’elle peut faire. Autant dire qu’on ne peut faire plus actuel! La phrase « crowning vultures into kings » dans le refrain renforce cette impression de voir une peinture de notre société mise en musique. Depuis le début de l’album Martin Lopez nous livre une prestation d’anthologie derrière les futs, et ça n’est pas « Discordia » et « Axis » qui nous feront changer d’avis! Le premier s’avère métal à souhait tout en gardant ces influences prog que le groupe chérie tant. Le morceau émouvant et introspectif nous rappelle à quel point Soen savent faire des tubes en puissance! Le suivant garde cette dualité entre couplet énergique à souhait et parties plus posées et progressives dans le reste du morceau.
Lars Enokåhlund aux claviers et à la guitare nous en met plein la vue avec le titre « Huntress » et ses sonorités qui ne sont pas sans rappeler ce que des groupes comme Vola peuvent proposer. La voix de Joel est vocodée pour un son toujours plus créatif et qui garde les influences métal alternatif du précédent disque. A l’inverse le titre suivant ne peut pas être plus représentatif du son de Soen! Puissant et mélodique il laisse à Cody Ford et Lars Ekelöf l’occasion de nous présenter une fois de plus des riffs imparables et un solo d’anthologie. Petite pause plus douce avec le piano de « Indifferent » qui laisse à Joel l’occasion de nous coller les poils avec son chant si émouvant. « Drifter » et « Draconian » laissent à Stefan Stenberg l’occasion de balancer des lignes de basse à vous faire remuer les cervicales, amplifiées par le jeu de batterie de Martin! Sur « Drifter » les claviers sont encore une fois très présents pendant que « Draconian » nous propose une fois de plus une mélodie dingue et une ligne de chant qui vous reste en tête dès la première écoute. On termine avec l’excellent « Vellichor » et son intro imposante et la présence renforcée des claviers. Tout le groupe donne tout sur ce dernier morceau pour nous laisser avec une forte impression!
Reliance renoue avec un son auquel Soen nous ont habitué au fil des années sans perdre de vue l’évolution sonore amorcée dans l’album précédent. Les dix titres de ce nouveau disque des suédois vient confirmer notre amour pour cette formation tout en nous donnant envie de s’y plonger plus en profondeur pour y déceler toutes les thématiques et propositions sonores. Un bel album qui grandira pour sûr dans nos cœurs et rejoindra les classiques du groupe que sont Lotus ou Imperial .

Three years after the album Memorial, which surprised fans with a sound quite different from what they had become accustomed to in the past, Swedish band Soen are back in the first month of the year with their seventh studio album. Entitled Reliance, it will be available on 16 January via Silver Lining Music. What does the prog rock band have in store for us with these ten new tracks? Let’s find out together!
The album opens with ‘Primal’, a surprising track as the verse is almost devoid of guitars, but they soon kick in. The song, which has been available for some time, is very political and libertarian in tone. The powerful chorus showcases Joel Ekelöf‘s magnificent voice, while the softer bridge allows us to enjoy the musicians’ talent. This is followed by ‘Mercenary’, a very martial track in its verses and powerful in its theme, evoking blind belief and the damage it can cause. Suffice to say, it couldn’t be more topical! The phrase ‘crowning vultures into kings’ in the chorus reinforces this impression of seeing a painting of our society set to music. Since the beginning of the album, Martin Lopez has delivered an anthological performance behind the drums, and “Discordia” and ‘Axis’ are no exception! The former is metal to perfection, while retaining the prog influences that the band cherishes so much. This moving and introspective track reminds us just how good Soen are at writing powerful hits! The next track maintains this duality between energetic verses and more laid-back, progressive sections in the rest of the song.
Lars Enokåhlund on keyboards and guitar dazzles us with the track ‘Huntress’ and its sounds reminiscent of bands like Vola. Joel‘s voice is vocoded for an even more creative sound that retains the alternative metal influences of the previous album. In contrast, the following track couldn’t be more representative of Soen‘s sound! Powerful and melodic, it gives Cody Ford and Lars Ekelöf the opportunity to once again present us with unstoppable riffs and an anthology solo. There’s a gentle interlude with the piano on ‘Indifferent’, which gives Joel the opportunity to give us goosebumps with his moving vocals. “Drifter” and ‘Draconian’ give Stefan Stenberg the opportunity to lay down some neck-breaking bass lines, amplified by Martin‘s drumming! On ‘Drifter’, the keyboards are once again very present, while “Draconian” offers us yet another crazy melody and a vocal line that sticks in your head from the first listen. We finish with the excellent ‘Vellichor’ and its imposing intro and reinforced keyboards. The whole band gives their all on this last track, leaving us with a strong impression!
Reliance returns to the sound that Soen has accustomed us to over the years without losing sight of the sonic evolution begun on the previous album. The ten tracks on this new album from the Swedish band confirm our love for this group while making us want to delve deeper into it to discover all its themes and sonic offerings. A beautiful album that is sure to grow in our hearts and join the band’s classics such as Lotus and Imperial.
