Dix ans que les fans de Textures attendent cet album, mais la fin prématurée du groupe en 2017 avait renvoyé ce disque à l’état de rêve. L’année 2026 s’ouvre avec non seulement la sortie de Genotype, mais dans une version retravaillée de zéro. Le successeur de l’excellent Phenotype renaît donc de ces cendres et est annoncé dans vos oreilles via Kscope pour le 23 janvier prochain. Le groupe néerlandais qui a annoncé son retour en 2024 a donc fait patienter ses fans pour cette sortie tant attendue. Que nous réserve la formation pour son grand retour, on vous dit ça de suite!

Les claviers sont clairement aux centres de ce disque et l’intro de « Void » nous plonge directement dans cet univers progressif qu’on aime tant chez la formation venue de Tilburg. L’énorme explosion sonore qui suit ne serait pas sans rappeler ce que Devin Townsend peut proposer dans certains de ces titres mais nous sommes bien là dans un disque de Textures! Le groupe prend le temps avec ce morceau introductif tout en y incorporant déjà ce qui a fait leur force par le passé, le retour est donc bel et bien lancé. Le morceau suivant déjà disponible depuis quelques temps nous offre un superbe featuring vocal entre Daniël de Jongh, ahurissant de maîtrise tout au long de l’album, et sa compatriote Charlotte Wessels (ex-Delain). Les deux voix se mêlent à merveille dans ce titres où les deux vocalistes ont chacun une place de choix pour imposer leur signature vocale, avec en bonus de très beaux screams de Charlotte! On ne voit pas passer les six minutes du titre qui sera pour sûr un véritable immanquable en live.
Tout au long du disque Joe Tal et Bart Hennephof nous livrent des riffs d’une inventivité folle. C’est technique sans être démonstratif, mais surtout cela nous rappelle à quel point le groupe excelle dans cette dualité entre musique progressive et titres taillés pour nous captiver en quelques secondes. « Measuring The Heavens » ou encore « Nautical Dusk » l’illustrent parfaitement en nous laissant prendre la pleine mesure du talent des deux guitaristes. Autant vous dire que vos cervicales vont avoir du mal à s’en remettre, surtout si elles doivent se frotter aux polyrythmies offertes par la section rythmique tenue par Remko Tielemans à la basse et Stef Broks à la batterie. Des titres comme « Vanishing Twin » nous montrent à quel point les deux musiciens forment un duo solide qui n’a rien perdu de sa superbe! La technique est là aussi ahurissante mais les émotions passent sans effort.
Je vous disais plus haut que les claviers sont au centre du disque, et impossible de ne pas citer le travail titanesque de Uri Dijk! C’est simple chaque titre regorge d’inventivité et de sonorités de claviers toutes plus impressionnantes les unes que les autres et qui s’intègrent parfaitement à ce que le groupe nous propose dans cette nouvelle sortie. « A Seat For The Like-Minded » jouit d’un superbe travail d’ambiances qui viennent sublimer les riffs, rythmiques et lignes vocales proposées par des musiciens tous au sommet de leur art. « Walls Of The Soul », le titre de clôture nous offre une fête aux rythmiques qui vous mettent la tête à l’envers et à une voix toujours aussi envoutante. C’est simple chaque seconde nous laisse imaginer ce que ces titres peuvent donner en live, et autant vous dire que l’attente de nouveaux concerts du groupe se fait de plus en plus forte.
Textures ne font pas les choses à moitié pour le retour! Genotype vient parfaitement rejoindre le légendaire Phenotype au rang des albums de métal progressif qui marqueront leurs époques respectives. On y retrouve tout ce qu’on aimait du groupe avec un son toujours plus massif et captivant. Les dix ans sans nouvelles et le travail repris à zéro pour cette sortie donnent un album des plus ambitieux de la formation néerlandaise, et l’espoir que ce est fait pour durer! En tout cas cette sortie vient déjà jeter un gros pavé dans la marre en ce premier mois de l’année! A foncer écouter dès sa sortie et à se passer en boucle pour en déceler toutes les subtilités. Clairement LA sortie de ce début d’année!

Keyboards are clearly at the heart of this album, and the intro to ‘Void’ plunges us straight into the progressive universe that we love so much about this band from Tilburg. The enormous sonic explosion that follows is reminiscent of some of Devin Townsend’s tracks, but this is definitely a Textures album! The band takes its time with this introductory track, while already incorporating what has made them so strong in the past, so the comeback is well and truly underway. The next track, which has been available for some time, features a superb vocal collaboration between Daniël de Jongh, who displays astonishing mastery throughout the album, and his compatriot Charlotte Wessels (ex-Delain). The two voices blend beautifully in this track, where both vocalists have a place of honour to impose their vocal signature, with the added bonus of Charlotte‘s beautiful screams! The six minutes of the track fly by, and it is sure to be a real live favourite.

It’s technical without being showy, but above all it reminds us how much the band excels in this duality between progressive music and tracks designed to captivate us in a matter of seconds. ‘Measuring The Heavens’ and ‘Nautical Dusk’ illustrate this perfectly, allowing us to fully appreciate the talent of the two guitarists. Suffice to say that your neck muscles will struggle to recover, especially if they have to contend with the polyrhythms offered by the rhythm section led by Remko Tielemans on bass and Stef Broks on drums. Tracks such as ‘Vanishing Twin’ show us just how solid a duo these two musicians are, with none of their brilliance lost! The technique is mind-boggling, but the emotions come across effortlessly.
I mentioned earlier that keyboards are central to the album, and it would be impossible not to mention the titanic work of Uri Dijk! Quite simply, every track is brimming with inventiveness and keyboard sounds, each more impressive than the last, which fit perfectly with what the band offers us in this new release. ‘A Seat For The Like-Minded’ benefits from superb atmospheric work that enhances the riffs, rhythms and vocal lines offered by musicians at the top of their game. ‘Walls Of The Soul’, the closing track, offers us a feast of mind-bending rhythms and vocals that are as captivating as ever. Quite simply, every second makes us imagine what these tracks would sound like live, and suffice to say that the anticipation for the band’s new concerts is growing stronger and stronger.
Textures aren’t doing things by halves for their comeback! Genotype perfectly joins the legendary Phenotype in the ranks of progressive metal albums that will mark their respective eras. It features everything we loved about the band, with an even more massive and captivating sound. Ten years without any news and starting from scratch for this release have resulted in one of the Dutch band’s most ambitious albums, and the hope that it’s here to stay! In any case, this release is already making waves in the first month of the year! Go listen to it as soon as it comes out and play it on repeat to discover all its subtleties. Clearly THE release of the beginning of the year!
