Nous ayant déjà bluffé en live à plusieurs reprises, nous sommes ravis de pouvoir plonger avec vous dans le premier album studio du groupe lillois EXIL. Intitulé Karga, il sera disponible dès le 30 janvier via Source Atone Records chez qui le groupe vient de signer. Toujours à cheval entre la France et le Kazakhstan, le post black métal de la formation est prêt à nous faire chavirer pour ces huit nouveaux titres.

De l’eau et un corbeau nous accueillent dans « Abîme » puis la batterie arrive suivie des guitares. On retrouve déjà ce son qui nous avait conquis en live, avec ces émotions fortes qui nous assaillent et qui montrent déjà à quel point le groupe veux frapper fort avec ce premier album. Cette ouverture instrumentale laisse les musiciens nous émerveiller et nous offrir un entrée magistrale dans cette nouvelle sortie. Quentin Florin et Arsen Raziyev lancent leurs meilleurs riffs puis Arsen vient nous présenter son chant surpuissant chanté en kazakh, ce qui vient renforcer l’immersion tout comme l’introduction très marquée par la culture de ce pays dans « Rodina ». Côté rythmique Hugo Nogard à la basse et Alan Dujardin à la batterie nous en mettent plein la vue également avec des rythmiques changeantes allant aussi bien chercher côté black métal que du côté du post punk à certains instants. Sur « Rodina » on retrouve aussi la voix de Quentin qui vient prêter main forte à Arsen pour un ensemble vocal des plus réussis. Le morceau suivant « Tchujoï » étonne par son mélange de trois langues chantées que sont l’anglais, le français et le kazakh! L’aspect international du groupe est donc total et cela apporte aux morceaux une vraie identité musicale qui ne laisse clairement pas indifférent. Et du haut de ces sept miutes ce titre nous laisse apprécier le talent indéniable qui émane de la formation lilloise.
Après l’interlude très doux « Déliverence » on plonge dans le sublime « Avec ou sans vous » qui laisse encore une fois Arsen nous montrer que son chant est capable en quelques instants de nous coller de véritables frissons, tout comme le jeu captivant de chaque musicien. « Poussière » vient reprendre le temps avec encore une fois un mélange sonore des plus passionnants, entre les sonorités très black et celles plus orientées post punk qu’on ressent une fois de plus au milieux du trémolo picking. Le morceau nous offre aussi un monologue envoutant habillé par une instrumentation pleine d’émotion. On sait qu’on arrive bientôt à la fin de l’écoute mais les surprises sont encore nombreuses et ravissent nos oreilles. Sur le titre final le groupe invite Amy Tung Barrysmith (Amenra, Year Of The Cobra) qui nous emporte avec son chant émouvant à souhait dans un titre où les sonorités ne sont pas sans rappeler Amenra justement. On ne peut que saluer cette collaboration qui laisse aux musiciens lillois l’occasion de proposer une dernière fois une composition des plus réussie et des plus fortes en sensation pour l’auditeur.
Que dire à part que Karga est un premier album qui restera clairement comme une des sorties de l’année! EXIL nous livrent un disque qui illustre parfaitement la maturité que le projet a déjà grâce à ces précédentes sorties et aux concerts tout en y apportant un son entre puissance et émotion qui nous prend aux tripes. L’album nous a emporté et on sait que cette identité forte qui se ressent tout au long de l’écoute saura plaire au plus grand nombre. Une sortie qui nous confirme une fois de plus la vitalité de la scène lilloise tout en nous faisant découvrir avec brio les influences Kazakh apportées par Arsen dans ce projet définitivement unique!

Having already blown us away live on several occasions, we are delighted to be able to dive into the first studio album by Lille-based band EXIL. Entitled Karga, it will be available from 30 January via Source Atone Records, with whom the band has just signed. Still straddling France and Kazakhstan, the band’s post-black metal is ready to blow us away with these eight new tracks.
Water and a crow welcome us to ‘Abîme’, then the drums kick in, followed by the guitars. We immediately recognise the sound that won us over live, with powerful emotions that overwhelm us and show just how hard the band wants to hit us with this first album. This instrumental opening allows the musicians to amaze us and offer us a masterful introduction to this new release. Quentin Florin and Arsen Raziyev launch into their best riffs, then Arsen presents his powerful vocals sung in Kazakh, which reinforces the immersion, as does the introduction to ‘Rodina’, which is heavily influenced by the culture of this country. On the rhythm side, Hugo Nogard on bass and Alan Dujardin on drums also impress us with changing rhythms that draw on both black metal and post-punk at times. On ‘Rodina’, we also hear Quentin‘s voice lending support to Arsen for a highly successful vocal ensemble. The next track, ‘Tchujoï’, surprises with its mix of three languages: English, French and Kazakh! The band’s international aspect is therefore complete, giving the tracks a real musical identity that clearly leaves no one indifferent. And at seven minutes long, this track allows us to appreciate the undeniable talent that emanates from this Lille-based band.
After the very gentle interlude ‘Déliverence’, we dive into the sublime ‘Avec ou sans vous’, which once again allows Arsen to show us that his singing is capable of giving us real chills in just a few moments, as is the captivating playing of each musician. ‘Poussière’ picks up the pace once again with a thrilling mix of sounds, ranging from very black metal tones to more post-punk-oriented ones, which we feel once again in the middle of the tremolo picking. The track also offers us a captivating monologue accompanied by emotionally charged instrumentation. We know that we are nearing the end of the album, but there are still many surprises in store to delight our ears. On the final track, the band invites Amy Tung Barrysmith (Amenra, Year Of The Cobra) to join them, and she carries us away with her moving vocals in a track whose sounds are reminiscent of Amenra. We can only applaud this collaboration, which gives the Lille-based musicians the opportunity to offer one last time a composition that is both highly successful and powerful for the listener.
What can we say except that Karga is a debut album that will clearly remain one of the releases of the year! EXIL deliver an album that perfectly illustrates the maturity that the project has already achieved thanks to its previous releases and concerts, while bringing a sound that is both powerful and emotional, and which really hits home. The album swept us away, and we know that its strong identity, which can be felt throughout, will appeal to a wide audience. This release once again confirms the vitality of the Lille scene, while brilliantly introducing us to the Kazakh influences brought by Arsen to this truly unique project!
