Né à Angers en 2018, Gondhawa est un trio proposant un rock psyché aux doux accents d’Orient. Ils nous proposent ce 30 janvier leur nouvel album : TÄKOMĀ. Il est à paraître via Le Cèpe Records et Stolen Body Records. Ce sont donc 10 nouveaux titres qui viennent enrichir les sonorités originales du groupe !

On démarre avec “Takameyo” qui nous embarque dans un premier temps dans un univers desert rock, teinté de mélodies orientales. On retrouve un petit côté old school et même un petit riff qui fait penser aux Rolling Stones. Puis on est happé sans même s’en rendre compte dans un tourbillon psychédélique, presque transcendantal, avec “Wha Genah Gennoh”. Les répétitions et le jeu des nuances et des contrastes ont un effet presque hypnotique. On pense alors retomber avec “Sayarha” qui s’avère en réalité être un titre qui monte progressivement en puissance. Ne cherchez pas la signification des mots, Gondhawa a créé sa propre langue. Ils nous embarquent ainsi un peu plus dans leur univers original et créé de toute pièce par le trio. On voyage avec eux, on a l’impression de vivre une aventure, passant par différents paysages et différentes émotions. On retrouve également des influences du rock progressif, notamment dans les passages où l’instrumental est prioritaire. Le groupe s’inspire d’univers variés. On entend ainsi des inspirations africaines, autant dans la voix de “Thuaraï” que dans les percussions en introduction de “Eywa”. Ce titre comporte également des sonorités mongoles, grâce notamment à l’utilisation d’instruments traditionnels. Gondhawa nous propose donc une fusion aussi bien musicale que géographique. En fil rouge on retrouve les mélodies orientales, l’énergie très rock, et le psyché qui reste présent d’un bout à l’autre. Ainsi, on est totalement dans cet univers, très King Gizzard and The Lizzard Wizard (une des influences principales citées par le groupe) avec “Lastik Mu”. Ce titre comporte également une voix grave, évoquant un aspect très ancestral et mystique à la fois. Et lorsque l’on pense avoir fait le tour, la formation nous surprend encore avec des sonorités toujours plus originales, comme dans “Olele Koko” ainsi qu’une ambiance totalement planante, légère, presque cosmique. Le travail rythmique est également remarquable, à l’instar des mélodies déstructurées de “Dioko Saïko”. On retourne dans des sonorités plus ancrées, plus graves avec “Banou Leï”. Puis on finit en apothéose avec un parfait mélange, dosé à la perfection, de tout ce qui a été précédemment cité ! “Hossora ! “ est la meilleure fin possible pour ce riche album, avec une énergie incroyable qui nous laisse pantois.
Avec TÄKOMĀ, Gondhawa nous fait voyager à travers divers univers musicaux mais aussi à travers le temps, les pays et les émotions. Cet opus est une véritable invitation au voyage de la pensée et à l’exploration de soi-même et du monde. La formation brise les frontières et on en a bien besoin en ce moment ! L’ensemble est particulièrement réussi et remarquable. Une seule petite déception : pas de passage dans le Nord annoncé lors de leur prochaine tournée ! Il est possible de les voir en release party au Point Ephémère (Paris) le 4 février prochain.

We start with ‘Takameyo’, which initially transports us to a desert rock universe tinged with Eastern melodies. There’s a slight old-school feel to it, and even a little riff reminiscent of the Rolling Stones. Then, without even realising it, we are swept up in a psychedelic, almost transcendental whirlwind with ‘Wha Genah Gennoh’. The repetitions and the play of nuances and contrasts have an almost hypnotic effect. We then think we’re coming back down with ‘Sayarha’, which turns out to be a track that gradually builds in power. Don’t bother looking up the meaning of the words, Gondhawa has created its own language. They draw us further into their original universe, created from scratch by the trio. We travel with them, feeling as if we are on an adventure, passing through different landscapes and different emotions. There are also influences from progressive rock, particularly in the passages where the instrumental takes centre stage. The band draws inspiration from a variety of sources. We hear African influences, both in the vocals on ‘Thuaraï’ and in the percussion in the introduction to ‘Eywa’. This track also features Mongolian sounds, thanks in particular to the use of traditional instruments. Gondhawa offers us a fusion that is both musical and geographical. The common thread running through the album is oriental melodies, rock energy and psychedelia, which remains present from start to finish. Thus, we are completely immersed in this universe, very much in the style of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard (one of the main influences cited by the band) with ‘Lastik Mu’. This track also features a deep voice, evoking a very ancestral and mystical aspect. And just when we think we’ve heard it all, the band surprises us again with ever more original sounds, as in ‘Olele Koko’, and a totally trippy, light, almost cosmic atmosphere. The rhythmic work is also remarkable, as are the deconstructed melodies of ‘Dioko Saïko’. . We return to more grounded, deeper sounds with ‘Banou Leï’. Then we finish with a grand finale, a perfectly balanced mix of everything mentioned above! ‘Hossora!’ is the best possible ending to this rich album, with incredible energy that leaves us speechless.
With TÄKOMĀ, Gondhawa takes us on a journey through various musical universes, but also through time, countries and emotions. This opus is a true invitation to travel in your mind and explore yourself and the world. The band breaks down barriers, which is something we really need right now! The ensemble is particularly successful and remarkable. The only slight disappointment is that they won’t be coming to the North on their upcoming tour! However, you can see them at their release party at Point Ephémère (Paris) on February 4th.
