Roaring Tubes nous avait encore concocté une soirée aux petits oignons le 6 février. Il était en effet annoncé le passage de Birds of Nazca à La Griffe. Le duo stoner / doom / heavy psyché et originaire de Nantes était accompagné d’un groupe mystère. En effet, l’organisation a fait le choix de ne pas annoncer la première partie, nous demandant de leur faire confiance. Et ils nous ont prouvé une fois de plus que l’on pouvait puisque nous avons eu droit à un set de Glowsun, reformé ce soir pour présenter son prochain album !

La cave se remplit rapidement dès son ouverture. En effet, le bruit a commencé à circuler : la première partie surprise serait Glowsun. La formation donne son premier concert de reformation, le premier depuis quelques années ! Le trio est déjà sur scène et nous accueille avec un fond sonore qui prend rapidement de l’ampleur. Le fuzz et le gras viennent s’installer dans la salle. On est dans quelque chose de très ambiant. La cave arrive rapidement à saturation. Les titres longs s’enchaînent sans pause puisque les transitions se font toujours avec une continuité dans le son. La rythmique est très puissante, que ce soit par le batterie mais aussi évidemment par les lignes de basse bien lourdes. Les longs passages instrumentaux laissent parfois une place à une voix posée et très ambiante. Des grandes envolées, notamment emmenées par la guitare, viennent contraster la lourdeur et apporter un côté psychédélique à l’ensemble. On entre presque en transe sur les parties lentes et graves, tandis que les passages plus déchaînés nous emmènent carrément dans un trip. On doit souligner le son particulièrement bon ce soir, d’autant plus pour un concert en cave. L’ensemble est particulièrement équilibré et on entend à merveille chaque instrument. Les solos de guitares nous emmènent d’ailleurs tout particulièrement dans l’esprit psyché avec des riffs qui font des envolées hallucinogènes, et toujours plus près du soleil. Mention spéciale aux nuances parfaites à la batterie ! D’autant plus que la formation déstructurent toujours plus les rythmes, ce qui nécessite d’être particulièrement carré. Vers la fin du set, on sent l’énergie qui monte encore plus d’un cran. Au final, on apprend que c’est non moins que tout le prochain album qui vient de nous être joué ! Nous avons commencé par “Change”, titre déjà paru sur le bandcamp du groupe, et que vous pouvez donc écouter dès maintenant ! Puis le groupe nous a fait découvrir les excellents “Alive” et “Dryad’s tears”. Pour le reste, rendez-vous très bientôt pour l’album ! Et pour l’avoir entendu en live on peut vous assurer de sa qualité !
On prend une petite pause dans l’ambiance de la Griffe. Et d’ailleurs, le PAP 40 s’invite à la soirée pour la promotion de son spectacle Les Doigts D’or. Cela crée un parfait interlude, décalé et engagé. Puis on redescend dans la cave pour Birds of Nazca. Le duo nantais démarre vers 22h15, face à de nombreux amateurs du genre. L’entrée de la formation est particulièrement dynamique. On part d’entrée de jeu dans l’aspect psychédélique de leur musique. A la guitare, Guillaume Kerdranvat produit des effets incroyables, permettant ainsi de proposer une formation avec seulement deux musiciens, tout en ayant aucun creux. Les cymbales de Romuald Chalumeau occupent une place importante dans les compositions. Le rythme est énergique en ce début de set. Le public rentre directement dans le show et la salle est festive et chaleureuse. Les compositions instrumentales sont très ambiantes. Elles sont dynamiques, tout en allant puiser dans des inspirations doom plus lourdes. Le côté répétitif et lent de certains passages offre un aspect de transe introspective. Le public se meut en rythme, et corps et musique ne font plus qu’un. En contraste avec ces passages d’inspiration principale doom, on retrouve des parties plus énervées, avec des riffs de guitare bien présents et très psychédéliques. Birds of Nazca nous embarque dans son univers unique et parfois très brut. Leurs sonorités viennent nous chercher dans nos tripes, dans une sorte d’archaïsme, allant puiser dans ce qui nous fait vibrer. A ce propos, vous noterez que la formation ne comporte pas de basse, ce qui est clairement un parti pris. Grâce aux effets et au talent des musiciens, on ressent pour autant une certaine lourdeur. Toutefois il est vrai que pour les amateurs de basse grasse et vibrante, cela pourrait encore améliorer leur expérience. On doit reconnaître que le duo fonctionne très bien. Les compositions sont d’une qualité exceptionnelle et on est totalement embarqués dans le concert. Et alors que la setlist était terminée, le public demande un rappel avec insistance, et Birds of Nazca vient nous ravir avec un titre supplémentaire.
Que ce soit au niveau fréquentation et ambiance, la soirée a été exceptionnelle sur tous les points ! De nouveau, Roaring Tubes nous a régalé avec sa programmation toujours aussi qualitative. L’organisation nous a même prouvé que nous pouvions aller les yeux fermés à leur concert avec la présence surprise de Glowsun ! On reverra cette formation au BetizFest le 11 avril, avec très certainement son nouvel album. Birds of Nazca a enchaîné avec des titres particulièrement qualitatifs qui ont ravi tout le monde. Leur album Pangea, paru en octobre dernier, est à écouter d’urgence ! En résumé : une soirée dont on se souviendra longtemps.

Roaring Tubes had once again put together a fantastic evening for us on 6 February. Birds of Nazca were announced to be playing at La Griffe. The stoner/doom/heavy psychedelic duo from Nantes were accompanied by a mystery band. The organisers had decided not to announce the support act, asking us to trust them. And they proved once again that we could, as we were treated to a set by Glowsun, reunited for the evening to present their upcoming album!

The cellar fills up quickly as soon as it opens. Word has spread: the first surprise act will be Glowsun. The band is playing its first reunion concert, the first in several years! The trio is already on stage and welcomes us with a soundtrack that quickly builds in intensity. Fuzz and fat sounds fill the room. The atmosphere is very ambient. The cellar quickly reaches capacity. The long tracks follow one another without pause, as the transitions are always seamless. The rhythm section is very powerful, both in terms of the drums and, of course, the heavy bass lines. The long instrumental passages sometimes give way to a calm, very ambient voice. Grand flourishes, led in particular by the guitar, contrast with the heaviness and bring a psychedelic feel to the whole. The slow, deep parts almost put us into a trance, while the more frenzied passages take us on a full-blown trip. The sound quality was particularly good tonight, especially for a concert in a cellar. The ensemble was well balanced and each instrument could be heard perfectly. The guitar solos transported us into a psychedelic state with hallucinogenic riffs, drawing us ever closer to the sun. Special mention must be made of the perfect nuances on the drums! Especially as the band increasingly deconstructs the rhythms, which requires particular precision. Towards the end of the set, we feel the energy rising even further. In the end, we learn that it is none other than the entire next album that has just been played to us! We started with ‘Change’, a track already released on the band’s Bandcamp, which you can listen to right now! Then the band introduced us to the excellent “Alive” and ‘Dryad’s Tears’. As for the rest, see you very soon for the album! And having heard it live, we can assure you of its quality!
We take a short break in the atmosphere of La Griffe. And besides, PAP 40 joins the party to promote his show Les Doigts D’or. This creates a perfect interlude, offbeat and engaging. Then we go back down to the cellar for Birds of Nazca. The Nantes duo starts around 10:15 p.m., in front of many fans of the genre. The band’s entrance is particularly dynamic. We dive straight into the psychedelic aspect of their music. On guitar, Guillaume Kerdranvat produces incredible effects, allowing the band to perform with only two musicians, without any gaps. Romuald Chalumeau‘s cymbals play an important role in the compositions. The rhythm is energetic at the start of the set. The audience is immediately drawn into the show and the venue is festive and warm. The instrumental compositions are very atmospheric. They are dynamic, while drawing on heavier doom inspirations. The repetitive and slow nature of certain passages creates an introspective trance-like feel. The audience moves to the rhythm, and body and music become one. In contrast to these mainly doom-inspired passages, there are more energetic parts, with very present and psychedelic guitar riffs. Birds of Nazca takes us into its unique and sometimes very raw universe. Their sounds reach deep into our guts, in a sort of archaic way, tapping into what makes us vibrate. In this regard, you will notice that the band does not include a bass guitar, which is clearly a deliberate choice. Thanks to the effects and the talent of the musicians, however, there is still a certain heaviness to their sound. However, it is true that for fans of rich, vibrant bass, this could further enhance their experience. We must acknowledge that the duo works very well together. The compositions are of exceptional quality and we are completely swept up in the concert. And when the setlist was over, the audience insisted on an encore, and Birds of Nazca delighted us with an extra song.
In terms of attendance and atmosphere, the evening was exceptional in every way! Once again, Roaring Tubes treated us to its usual high-quality line-up. The organisers even proved that we could go to their concert with our eyes closed with the surprise appearance of Glowsun! We will see this band again at BetizFest on April 11th, most likely with their new album. Birds of Nazca followed with some particularly high-quality songs that delighted everyone. Their album Pangea, released last October, is a must-listen! In short: an evening we will remember for a long time.
