On est de suite embarqués dans un univers atypique. Dès “In my City”, on entend pléthores d’influences, et surtout, on est pris dans un tourbillon hyper puissant duquel on n’a même pas envie de se défaire. Les phrases répétitives nous entraînent dans une sorte de transe et nous préparent ainsi à la suite de l’écoute. Les sonorités de distorsion, passant d’un côté à l’autre nous emmènent dans une autre réalité, qui laisse place à des émotions bien réelles. Les rythmes se déstructurent et se restructurent avec “Unexpected Voice”. Le tempo est rapide, le fuzz des guitares est bien là. La base rythmique prend une place importante dans des passages plus posés, avant de repartir de plus belle. La voix se module selon les passages, parfois presque lointaine, pleine de réverb, parfois agressive et puissante. On navigue entre le rock psyché, prédominant, le garage, le post punk, les sonorités expérimentales… On retrouve un peu l’esprit stoner punk de Godsleep, par exemple dans “jellyfish”, mais aussi plusieurs fois tout au long de l’album. Cela vient peut-être également de l’énergie brute que dégage le groupe, lié à l’enregistrement sous la forme d’un live. La basse peut se faire lourde et grasse, notamment dans “Evil Genius”. Les premiers titres, endiablés et plutôt concis, laissent la place à des compositions plus longues comme “Ghost Song” ou encore “The Cog” qui clôt l’album. On retrouve dans la première une ambiance qui nous pousse à prendre le temps et à se poser. On sent que le titre prend le temps de se dévoiler, devenant de plus en plus psychédélique au fur et à mesure que les minutes passent. Le groupe nous dévoile également des rythmiques plutôt orientales au début de “Lick the Toad”. C’est l’avant dernier titre de l’opus qui a été sélectionné comme single. “What The Hell” est écoutable depuis plusieurs semaines, et il faut dire que ce choix est parfait. Le titre regroupe l’essence de la personnalité de Mafia Sofa. Il est particulièrement entrainant, et on y retrouve autant la lourdeur que le psyché ou le garage, avec toujours cette énergie caractéristique du groupe. On termine cet album par “The Cog” donc, qui est le miroir de “Ghost Song”. En effet, elle démarre de manière très entraînante, très rythmée, pour terminer dans des influences plutôt doom, lentes et lourdes.
Unexpected Voice est donc un album riche, brut et parfois surprenant. Le mixage est d’une qualité optimale et rend totalement hommage au style de Mafia Sofa et à son énergie. A la fin de l’écoute, on a une seule envie : un passage sur Lille pour un concert déchaîné, comme peut nous en offrir Roaring Tubes par exemple.

We are immediately transported into an unusual universe. From the very first track, ‘In My City’, we hear a plethora of influences, and above all, we are caught up in a powerful whirlwind that we don’t even want to escape. The repetitive phrases draw us into a kind of trance, preparing us for what is to come. The distorted sounds, shifting from one side to the other, transport us to another reality, giving way to very real emotions. The rhythms break down and rebuild themselves with ‘Unexpected Voice’. The tempo is fast, and the fuzz of the guitars is very much present. The rhythmic base takes on an important role in the more subdued passages, before picking up again with renewed vigour. The vocals modulate according to the passages, sometimes almost distant, full of reverb, sometimes aggressive and powerful. We navigate between psychedelic rock, which predominates, garage, post-punk, experimental sounds… We find a bit of the stoner punk spirit of Godsleep, for example in ‘Jellyfish’, but also several times throughout the album. This may also come from the raw energy that the band exudes, linked to the live recording format. The bass can be heavy and fat, especially in ‘Evil Genius’. The first tracks, which are wild and rather concise, give way to longer compositions such as ‘Ghost Song’ and ‘The Cog’, which closes the album. The first track has an atmosphere that encourages us to take our time and relax. You can feel that the song takes its time to reveal itself, becoming more and more psychedelic as the minutes pass. The band also unveils some rather oriental rhythms at the beginning of ‘Lick the Toad’. It is the penultimate track on the album that has been selected as a single. ‘What The Hell’ has been available to listen to for several weeks now, and it has to be said that this choice is perfect. The track encapsulates the essence of Mafia Sofa‘s personality. It is particularly catchy, combining heaviness with psychedelia and garage rock, always with the band’s characteristic energy. The album ends with ‘The Cog’, which mirrors ‘Ghost Song’. It starts off in a very catchy, rhythmic way, ending with slow, heavy doom influences.
Unexpected Voice is therefore a rich, raw and sometimes surprising album. The mixing is of the highest quality and pays full tribute to Mafia Sofa‘s style and energy. At the end of the listen, we are left with only one desire: to see them perform live in Lille, in a wild concert, like those offered by Roaring Tubes, for example.
