Après 6 ans sans nouvelle sortie, New Found Glory est de retour avec Listen Up!. La formation nous propose 10 titres pop punk, pour 35 minutes hors de toute la négativité de ce monde. Il s’agit de la première sortie du groupe sur le label Pure Noise Records.

 D’entrée de jeu, avec “Boom Roasted”, on entre dans l’esprit du punk rock à l’ancienne. On est plongés dans le début des années 2000. Avec des refrains que l’on se sent pouvoir chantonner rapidement comme dans “100%”, New Found Glory est de retour avec un pop punk festif et mélodique. Le chant collégial sur certains chœurs est également typique du style. La formation sait également se faire plus agressive par moments. On retrouve ainsi quelques influences du punk hardcore dans “Beer and Blood Stains”, notamment par des riffs un peu percutants, et un rythme plus rentre dedans. La voix reste elle très mélodique, et les refrains toujours aussi efficaces. Les compositions nous renvoient tellement au punk rock du début des années 2000, que l’on entend certains groupes de cette période au cours de notre écoute. Ainsi, la ligne de basse de “Medicine” nous rappelle particulièrement “Warning” de Green Day, tandis que le début de “Treat Yourself” fait très The Offspring dans l’esprit. Listen Up! est, de manière générale, très solaire. Le tempo rapide, la basse présente qui nous entraîne dans le rythme, les riffs de guitares mélodiques et accessibles, avec une voix plutôt haute et chantée nous pousse à un esprit positif, festif, et nous sort le temps d’un album d’une morosité ambiante. Évidemment on retrouve quelques accents nostalgiques, comme par exemple dans “Dream Born Again”, qui est également un des titres les plus longs de cet album, avec un tempo un peu plus lent que les autres. On reprend l’esprit positif et même de franche camaraderie avec “You Got This”. On termine l’opus avec “Frankenstein’s Mother”, toujours dans le même esprit, qui nous laisse plein d’énergie et de belles pensées. 

Listen Up! a quelque chose de rassurant, qui nous ramène à notre zone de confort, à des sensations positives et réconfortantes. L’espoir qui en émane est un antidépresseur naturel. Si vous aimez le pop punk à la Sum 41 et que vous êtes en manque depuis l’arrêt du groupe, cette sortie de New Found Glory est votre banger de l’année !

After six years without a new release, New Found Glory is back with Listen Up!. The band offers us ten pop punk tracks, providing 35 minutes of escape from all the negativity in the world. This is the band’s first release on the Pure Noise Records label.

Right from the start, with ‘Boom Roasted’, we are transported back to the spirit of old-school punk rock. We are plunged into the early 2000s. With choruses that you can quickly find yourself humming along to, such as in ‘100%’, New Found Glory is back with festive and melodic pop punk. The collegiate vocals on some of the choruses are also typical of the style. The band also knows how to be more aggressive at times. We find some hardcore punk influences in ‘Beer and Blood Stains’, notably in the slightly percussive riffs and a more in-your-face rhythm. The vocals remain very melodic, and the choruses are as effective as ever. The compositions are so reminiscent of early 2000s punk rock that we hear certain bands from that period as we listen. The bass line in ‘Medicine’ is particularly reminiscent of Green Day‘s “Warning”, while the beginning of ‘Treat Yourself’ is very much in the spirit of The Offspring. Listen Up! is, in general, very upbeat. The fast tempo, the bass line that draws us into the rhythm, the melodic and accessible guitar riffs, and the rather high-pitched vocals put us in a positive, festive mood and lift us out of the prevailing gloom for the duration of the album. Of course, there are some nostalgic touches, such as in ‘Dream Born Again’, which is also one of the longest tracks on the album, with a slightly slower tempo than the others. The positive spirit and even frank camaraderie returns with ‘You Got This’. The album ends with ‘Frankenstein’s Mother’, in the same spirit, leaving us full of energy and beautiful thoughts.

Listen Up! has something reassuring about it, bringing us back to our comfort zone, to positive and comforting feelings. The hope it exudes is a natural antidepressant. If you like Sum 41-style pop punk and have been missing it since the band split up, this release from New Found Glory is your banger of the year!
