Huit ans après les débuts sanglants de Leather Teeth (2018) et quatre ans après la violence de Leather Terror (2022), Carpenter Brut, alias Franck Hueso, pose enfin la dernière pierre à son édifice. Prévu pour ce 27 février 2026 via Virgin Records, c’est dans une dimension cyberpunk et apocalyptique que se clôt la saga « Leather » avec Leather Temple. Attachez vos ceintures !

Fini les ruelles crades d’un vieux slasher des années 80, nous avons affaire à un changement de décor pour le moins radical. Place maintenant à de la science-fiction dystopique ! Le scénario nous propulse dans le futur, à Midwichpolis, une mégalopole sous le joug du tyran Iron Tusk (vous noterez la ressemblance avec un personnage réel). Exhumé et ramené à la vie sous la forme d’un cyborg par une certaine Lita Connor (inspirée d’un personnage purement fictif cette fois-ci), l’anti-héros Bret Halford devient une redoutable machine de guerre. Ici, la violence dépasse la simple œuvre d’un tueur en série pour s’ancrer profondément dans la société. C’est donc dans ce cadre particulièrement oppressant que se déroule Leather Temple.

Côté musical, Carpenter Brut s’écarte légèrement des précédents disques. Dans une démarche entièrement instrumentale et plus cinématographique, mais un poil moins metal qu’auparavant, on prend ici une avalanche de synthétiseurs lourds, des rythmiques plus industrielles et une marée de sonorités électro. Malgré l’absence de chant et donc de paroles, l’artiste a tout de même souhaité raconter une histoire derrière chacune de ses pistes. Un parti pris qui permet, une fois de plus, de s’immerger dans cette infernale “course à la mort”.

Dès l’introduction nommée “Ouverture (Deus Ex Machina)”, l’orgue massif, non sans rappeler le côté “temple”, nous happe par son ambiance à la fois théâtrale et épique : Bret est ressuscité et prêt à en découdre ! On retrouvera cet instrument également au début de “She Rules the Ruins”, morceau centré sur Lita Connor. Après avoir pris ses marques lors du pressant “Major Threat”, la résistance s’organise dans le titre éponyme qui s’avère puissant, lourd mais aussi sombre, influencé par des artistes tels que Meshuggah et Gesaffelstein. Préparez-vous maintenant au top départ avec l’excellent “Start Your Engines”, diablement entraînant et absolument inarrêtable une fois la machine lancée. Dans un autre registre, le très synthwave aux influences résolument 80s nommé “Neon Requiem” offre un répit somme toute relatif dans ce monde déprimant avec une mélodie terriblement entêtante. Le moment est venu d’infiltrer le sanctuaire d’Iron Tusk par la rébellion dans “Iron Sanctuary”. Le danger est tellement palpable qu’on imagine sans difficulté la progression du groupe dans les couloirs de ce lieu. L’assaut est donné avec l’intrépide “The Misfits / The Rebels”. Ça explose de partout mais les rebelles essaient de s’en sortir ! Vient ensuite le climax lors de “Speed Or Perish”. Dans une ultime poursuite complètement folle au cœur de l’arène de Midwichpolis, illustrée notamment par un clip dirigé par Seth Ickerman, les rebelles n’ont d’autre choix que le sacrifice dans l’optique d’atteindre leur but : en finir avec ce système une bonne fois pour toutes ! Sans conteste l’un des meilleurs titres de l’album… superbement épique ! Après une telle explosion de violence, Leather Temple vient clore la trilogie entamée huit ans auparavant avec le dénouement de l’aventure sur la piste lente et atmosphérique “The End Complete”. Franck Hueso laisse délibérément une fin ouverte, sujette à l’interprétation de chacun…

À travers ce troisième chapitre, Carpenter Brut réussit son pari et signe une conclusion digne de ce nom pour la saga Leather. Même si l’absence de voix peut en rebuter certains, la narration portée par ces dix compositions instrumentales est éminemment bien orchestrée, nous incitant à plonger profondément dans cette dystopie cyberpunk. Ces dernières semaines, l’artiste a annoncé une grande tournée européenne et nord-américaine avec notamment un arrêt à la Condition Publique à Roubaix en octobre prochain. Certains sons vont faire mouche en live, c’est certain !

Gone are the grimy alleyways of an old 80s slasher film; we’re dealing with a radical change of scenery. Now, let’s move on to dystopian science fiction! The story propels us into the future, to Midwichpolis, a megalopolis under the yoke of the tyrant Iron Tusk (you’ll notice the resemblance to a real person). Exhumed and resurrected as a cyborg by a certain Lita Connor (inspired by a purely fictional character this time), the anti-hero Bret Halford becomes a formidable killing machine. Here, the violence transcends the mere act of a serial killer to become deeply ingrained in society. It is within this particularly oppressive context that Leather Temple unfolds.

Musically, Carpenter Brut departs slightly from his previous albums. In a completely instrumental and more cinematic approach, but a touch less metal than before, we are treated to an avalanche of heavy synthesizers, more industrial rhythms, and a tide of electronic sounds. Despite the absence of vocals and therefore lyrics, the artist still wanted to tell a story behind each track. This approach allows us, once again, to immerse ourselves in this infernal « race to death. »

From the opening track, “Ouverture (Deus Ex Machina),” the massive organ, reminiscent of a temple, immediately draws us in with its theatrical and epic atmosphere: Bret is resurrected and ready for a fight! This instrument also reappears at the beginning of “She Rules the Ruins,” a track centered on Lita Connor. After establishing their footing with the insistent “Major Threat,” the resistance builds in the eponymous track, which proves powerful, heavy, and dark, influenced by artists such as Meshuggah and Gesaffelstein. Now, prepare for the starting gun with the excellent “Start Your Engines,” devilishly catchy and absolutely unstoppable once it gets going. In a different vein, the synthwave track with its decidedly 80s influences, “Neon Requiem,” offers a somewhat relative respite in this depressing world with its incredibly infectious melody. The time has come for the rebellion to infiltrate Iron Tusk’s sanctuary in « Iron Sanctuary. » The danger is so palpable that it’s easy to imagine the group’s advance through the corridors of this place. The assault begins with the fearless « The Misfits / The Rebels. » Explosions erupt everywhere, but the rebels try to escape! Then comes the climax with « Speed Or Perish. » In a final, completely insane chase through the heart of the Midwichpolis arena, illustrated by a music video directed by Seth Ickerman, the rebels have no choice but to sacrifice themselves to achieve their goal: to end this system once and for all! Undoubtedly one of the best tracks on the album… superbly epic! After such an explosion of violence, Leather Temple concludes the trilogy begun eight years earlier with the denouement of the adventure on the slow and atmospheric track « The End Complete. » Franck Hueso deliberately leaves the ending open, subject to individual interpretation…

With this third chapter, Carpenter Brut succeeds in his endeavor and delivers a truly fitting conclusion to the Leather saga. While the absence of vocals might deter some, the narrative conveyed through these ten instrumental compositions is exceptionally well-orchestrated, drawing us deep into this cyberpunk dystopia. In recent weeks, the artist has announced a major European and North American tour, including a stop at La Condition Publique in Roubaix this October. Some of these tracks are sure to be a hit live!
