Quatre ans après Scars For You To Remember, Varials reviennent avec Where The Light Leaves, sorti le 27 février chez Fearless Records. Ce quatrième album marque le début d’un nouveau chapitre avec le nouveau chanteur Skyler Conder, tout en conservant des liens étroits avec l’atmosphère de leurs précédents travaux. Connu pour ses performances live endiablées, dont nous avons pu être témoins l’année dernière lors de la tournée avec Boundaries, Varials apporte cette même énergie explosive dans ce nouvel album. Une férocité hardcore, des breakdowns puissants, des lignes de basse groovy et une atmosphère aventureuse s’y côtoient sans complexe.
Le morceau titre, « Where The Light Leaves », ouvre l’album avec une atmosphère angoissante et des sonorités industrielles avant que tout n’explose. Des riffs distordus, une batterie profonde et des breakdowns écrasants nous plongent directement dans le chaos. Il n’y a pas d’introduction en douceur. « C’est ici, là où la lumière s’en va. » On a l’impression d’une véritable tempête mentale. Comme l’explique Skyler Conder, le morceau donne le ton de l’album : le sentiment d’être piégé dans son propre esprit, coincé dans une sorte de purgatoire, apprenant à vivre avec l’obscurité plutôt que de s’en échapper. Avec « No Lie Untouched », le rythme reste soutenu. Le refrain introduit une mélodie plus calme avec seulement quelques notes de guitare, tandis que les chuchotements de Skyler Conder semblent tendus et menaçants avant de se transformer en cris bruts. Les guitares distordues et la batterie lourde reviennent en force, maintenant la pression constante.
« Illusions of Loss » s’aventure plus profondément dans le territoire hardcore, avec un esprit presque beatdown. C’est un morceau sans concession, clairement conçu pour le moshpit. Si la chanson durait plus longtemps, elle nous enterrerait probablement complètement. « Your Soul Feeds » reprend de la vitesse. Des voix claires apparaissent brièvement mais ne restent pas longtemps. Les riffs prennent le contrôle et font avancer le morceau sans laisser beaucoup d’espace pour respirer, tandis que l’album continue avec « The Hurt Chamber », où le groupe montre une autre facette. Les voix claires et les notes de clavier apportent d’abord une atmosphère plus légère, avant que la basse ne nous ramène vers quelque chose de plus profond et de plus sombre. C’est probablement l’un des morceaux les plus doux de l’album, même s’il est loin d’être calme. La structure lente et la ligne de basse groovy nous guident progressivement vers le chaos. Il construit un mur de son intimidant dès les premières secondes. La lourdeur est immédiate, un « motherfucker » crié suffit à ouvrir instantanément le pit. C’est le dernier moment vraiment écrasant de l’album, et il fait exactement ce qu’il doit faire. Skyler Conder décrit cette chanson comme une chanson sur le fait d’être consumé par la douleur, de se sentir perdu en soi-même et terrifié par l’existence, tout en essayant de surmonter le chagrin et le mal de cœur. L’agressivité des instruments correspond parfaitement à cette charge émotionnelle. Enfin, « (intothequiet) » clôt l’album comme la fin d’un film, avec le son d’une vieille cassette VHS qui s’estompe. Elle nous laisse dans le silence après tout ce chaos.
Les précédents albums de VARIALS comprenaient souvent un moment plus doux, presque une ballade. Avec Where The Light Leaves, nous sommes vraiment laissés dans le noir. C’est peut-être leur œuvre la plus brutale et la plus viscérale à ce jour, mais aussi leur meilleure, le groupe s’est surpassé. L’album semble cohérent non seulement en lui-même, mais aussi dans leur discographie. Les interludes font écho à Scars For You To Remember, et le lien entre « Romance » et « Romance II » relie le passé et le présent. Le groupe évolue, mais il nous emmène avec lui, s’assurant que nous ne nous perdons jamais, même lorsque la lumière s’estompe.

Four years after Scars For You To Remember, VARIALS returns with Where The Light Leaves, which will be released on February 27th via Fearless Records. Known for their fierce live presence, something we witnessed last year on tour with Boundaries, VARIALS brings that same explosive energy into this new record. Hardcore ferocity, huge breakdowns, some groovy bass lines, and an adventurous atmosphere all collide in there with unapologetic purpose.
The title track, “Where The Light Leaves”, opens the album with an anxious atmosphere and industrial tones before everything explodes. Distorted riffs, deep drums, and crushing breakdowns drop us straight into chaos. There is no soft introduction. “This is where, where the light leaves.” It feels like a pure mental storm. As Skyler Conder explains, the track sets the tone for the whole album: a feeling of being trapped in your own mind, stuck in a kind of purgatory, learning to live with the darkness rather than escaping it. With « No Lie Untouched », the pace stays high. The chorus introduces a calmer melody with just a few guitar notes, while Skyler Conder’s whispers feel tense and threatening before turning into raw screams. The distorted guitars and heavy drums crash back in, keeping the pressure constant. « Illusions of Loss » pushes deeper into hardcore territory, almost beatdown in spirit. It’s unapologetic and clearly built for the moshpit. The breakdown hits hard, one of those moments that will make the whole room move without warning. On « Conscious Collapse », the energy remains heavy and focused. A groovy bass line carries the track while everything grows even more intense as it moves forward. If the song lasted longer, it would probably bury us completely. « Your Soul Feeds » picks up speed again. Clean vocals appear briefly but don’t stay long. The riffs take control and drive the track forward without giving much space to breathe while the record keeps going with « The Hurt Chamber » where the band shows another side. Clean vocals and keyboard notes bring a lighter atmosphere at first before the bass pulls us back into something deeper and darker. It’s probably one of the softer tracks on the record, though still far from calm. The slow-burn structure and groovy bass line guide us steadily into chaos. There are moments where the clean vocal effects recall Thornhill’s sound, but that doesn’t last. Skyler Conder explains that the song is about being addicted to a high, whether it’s love, drugs, or a situation, becoming blind to the damage because it feels good. The ache becomes a kind of comfort. You enter the hurt chamber and don’t want to leave. The interlude « [wouldyoufollowsme] » offers a brief moment of calm. A soft guitar play without effect, a voice that sounds like it’s coming through an old radio, and soft clean vocals create a fragile pause, the calm before the storm. That storm arrives immediately with « Silent Demise ». No warning, just impact. “I am your hate” opens the track, and we’re thrown back into the tornado. After that « Blissful End » keeps the intensity going, staying true to the record’s direct and aggressive tone. On « Romance II », the well-known groovy bass line leads the way. The track reflects the earlier song « Romance » before shifting into something heavier and more forceful. It keeps the emotional core of the original while updating it with the current VARIALS sound. « Metanoia » opens with a raw amp sound, bringing us back to the precise and fierce identity introduced at the start of the record. The pace is steady, almost like a war march, with moments of acceleration. Drums and guitars work tightly together, delivering one of the most focused tracks on the album. « I’ll Find The Dark » was the first track released since 2022 and announced the record, it builds an intimidating wall of sound from the first seconds. The heaviness is immediate, a shouted “motherfucker” is enough to open the pit instantly. It stands as the last truly crushing moment of the record, and it does exactly what it needs to do. Skyler Conder describes it as a song about being consumed by pain, about feeling lost within yourself and terrified of existence, while still trying to overcome grief and heartache. The aggression of the instruments matches that emotional weight perfectly. Finally, « (intothequiet) » closes the album like the end of a movie, with the sound of an old VHS tape fading out. It leaves us in silence after all the chaos.
Previous VARIALS records often included a softer, almost ballad-like moment. With Where The Light Leaves, we are truly left in the dark. It may be their most brutal and visceral work to date but also their best work, the band surpassed themselves. The album feels cohesive not only within itself, but also within their discography. The interludes echo Scars For You To Remember, and the connection between « Romance » and « Romance II » ties past and present together. The band evolves, but they take us with them, making sure we never lose our way, even when the light fades.
