En 2022, le groupe américain Sweet Pill sortait son premier album et marquait les esprits avec un emo rock des plus réussis. Les revoilà aujourd’hui avec un second disque très attendu, crée après plusieurs tournées avec entre autres La Dispute ou The Wonder Years. Intitulé Still There’s A Glow, ce deuxième disque du groupe basé entre Philadelphie et le New Jersey est disponible depuis le 13 mars via Hopeless Records. Nous voilà partis à la découverte de treize titres prêts à jouer avec nos émotions.

L’énergie de « Sunblind », titre d’ouverture de ce nouveau disque vient nous plonger dans l’univers du quintet américain. La voix de Zayna Youssef vient nous cueillir en plus des parties de guitare très réussies et des rythmiques entraînantes. Le chant de Zayna est souvent rejoint dans de belles harmonies, ou même en solo par la voix de Sean McCall, également guitariste de la formation. Ce duo vocal fonctionne à merveille et offre une belle dynamique aux morceaux. On ne peut s’empêcher de penser à Brand New Eyes de Paramore sur un titre comme « No Control », et c’est un véritable compliment. Les rythmiques de Ryan Cullen à la basse et Chris Kearney à la batterie nous offrent de belles variations et une énergie qui vient donner envie de bouger. L’émotion se retrouve dans les paroles chantées par Zayna et Sean. On sent une envie de raconter leur vision de la vie et du monde et chaque morceau vient nous cueillir pour ne plus nous lâcher, avec en particulier des parties screamées de Sean très très réussies. Encore un duo qui fonctionne à merveille avec Jayce Williams et Sean McCall aux guitares. Leur jeu, lui aussi, transmet toute la puissance des titres avec brio. On se sent evouté par « Glow » pendant que « Slow Burn » donne envie de se lancer dans un pogo endiablé.
On est à peine à la moitié du disque et on sait déjà qu’on a là une des sorties majeures de ce mois de mars, et même de l’année. Le groupe a plongé tête la première dans le meilleur de la fin des années 2000 et du début de la décennie suivante et a ajouté son identité si forte à chacune des compositions de ce disque avec en particulier des sonorités math rock imparables. « Smoke Scream » et « Makes Me Sick » le montrent une fois de plus avec encore des performances superbe de chaque musicien.ne de la formation américaine. « Rotten » vient mettre un coup de pied dans la fourmilière avec une énergie brute qui montre que le groupe sait aussi aller nous chercher dans des sonorités plus sombres. Tout dans ce titre, de l’instru au mix vient montrer l’étendue du talent du quintet une fois de plus. Retour à la douceur avec « Tough Love » et son riffs de guitare qui reste encré dans notre tête dès la première écoute. L’album se clôt sur deux titres une fois de plus venant toucher notre corde sensible et notre amour des riffs envoutants. Une fin de disque en apothéose qui nous laisse avec l’envie de relancer l’album au plus vite.
Still There’s A Glow cimente Sweet Pill sur la scène émo rock mondiale. Chaque titre est une réussite et l’album s’écoute à l’envie en nous rappelant nos souvenirs de notre adolescence musicale mais en y apportant plein de choses propres à notre temps et à l’anxiété qui résulte de ces temps troublés. On se retrouve pleinement dans ce disque et on vous encourage vivement à aller le découvrir!
Le groupe sera de passage le 6 juin au Supersonic de Paris (entrée gratuite) et on peut vous dire qu’on ne manquera pas ça !

In 2022, American band Sweet Pill released their debut album and made a lasting impression with their highly successful emo rock sound. Now they’re back with a highly anticipated second album, created after several tours with La Dispute and The Wonder Years, among others. Entitled Still There’s A Glow, this second album from the Philadelphia and New Jersey-based band has been available since March 13th via Hopeless Records. Let’s dive into thirteen tracks ready to play with our emotions.
The energy of ‘Sunblind’, the opening track on this new album, plunges us into the world of this American quintet. Zayna Youssef‘s voice captivates us, complemented by the highly accomplished guitar parts and catchy rhythms. Zayna’s vocals are often joined in beautiful harmonies, or even solo, by the voice of Sean McCall, who is also the band’s guitarist. This vocal duo works wonderfully and gives the songs a beautiful dynamic. One can’t help but think of Paramore‘s Brand New Eyes on a track like ‘No Control’, and that’s a real compliment. The rhythms of Ryan Cullen on bass and Chris Kearney on drums offer beautiful variations and an energy that makes you want to move. The emotion is found in the lyrics sung by Zayna and Sean. You can feel their desire to share their vision of life and the world, and each track grabs you and won’t let go, particularly with Sean’s very successful screamed parts. Another duo that works wonderfully well is Jayce Williams and Sean McCall on guitars. Their playing also brilliantly conveys the power of the tracks. We feel spellbound by ‘Glow’ while ‘Slow Burn’ makes us want to launch into a frenzied mosh pit.
We’re barely halfway through the album and we already know that this is one of the major releases of March, and even of the year. The band has dived headfirst into the best of the late 2000s and early 2010s, adding its strong identity to each of the compositions on this album, with unstoppable math rock sounds in particular. ‘Smoke Scream’ and ‘Makes Me Sick’ demonstrate this once again, with superb performances from every musician in the American band. ‘Rotten’ kicks things up a notch with raw energy that shows the band also knows how to draw us in with darker sounds. Everything about this track, from the instrumentation to the mix, showcases the quintet’s talent once again. We return to gentler tones with ‘Tough Love’ and its guitar riffs that stick in our heads from the first listen. The album closes with two tracks that once again strike a chord with us and our love of captivating riffs. It’s a grand finale that leaves us wanting to play the album again as soon as possible.
Still There’s A Glow cements Sweet Pill’s place on the global emo rock scene. Every track is a success, and the album is a joy to listen to, reminding us of our musical teenage years while bringing something new to the table that is unique to our time and the anxiety that comes with these troubled times.
